Amazing exploration game. Sludge Life sells you on a basic idea... pure vandalism for the sake of it, existing just for the fun of it. Don’t expect deep narratives (there are narratives, though). The story is just like the atmosphere of the city, full of smog, pollution, and, most of all, people who have lost meaning and just trip on shrooms, tag anywhere they can, and accept the bleak and absurd nature of the SLUDGE produced by GLOP. Exploration and collection is the main gameplay. On that note, I was expecting a little more fluidity from the movement system, but what’s there serves its purpose. New tools acquired during gameplay make the loop gradually smoother, and there is always a reward for getting somewhere (most of the time, a genuinely funny interaction with someone) The soundtrack is top-notch, and I wish it were officially available on youtube :( In memory of Ciggy 🚬
although a very short game, i think that this game is a an amazing expression of another side of gaming - that side with not so amazing gameplay, but amazing visuals and atmosphere. i think that if this aesthetic looks interesting to you, you should a 100% get the game IF it is on sale
Sludge Life is a very enjoyable 6/10 game that I managed to get quite into after the first 90 minutes. The artstyle is solid, very much continuing what they forged in their earlier game High Hell with gross and sexual elements that feel gritty and real within the cartoony style. Sludge Life, however, adds a lot of grime and applies a VHS and semi-swirly filter over the entire experience. There isn't much story aside from the fact that you are a spray paint "tagger" trying to gain street cred and recognition. As you tag the 100 spots around the map you unlock collaborations with the other taggers who are part of the colorful and varied cast of characters who talk to you if you choose to interact with them. Sludge Life is packed with a ton of little activities to do with checklists, minigames and music players all centralized in the main menu which is stylized as a computer that your in-game character, GHOST, uses. But by far the best elements of the game that made it so engrossing was the corporate-monopolized dystopian-world and rundown feel of the weary workforce and their work/living-spaces. Perhaps my favorite part was the music, which was placed around in speakers dotting the map, each playing a different song. Each of the songs was mellow yet exciting, drony and repetitive low wave bass frequencies... a hard to describe lo-fi feeling permeated each of the tunes that had a unique sound to them only really found in games by this developer. That's easily the highest area of praise for the game. One of the biggest issues I have with Sludge Life, however, aside from its short length, and lack of a meaningful story, was the movement. While some great tools are introduced, like a mobile hang-glider (which is too delayed, causing it to be annoying), teleporters around the map, and a mobile one you can steal; this game is fundamentally lacking the enjoyable and satisfying movement that comes from rail grinding, skating and scaling buildings more stylishly in games like JetSetRadio (and Bomb Rush Cyberfunk) and Marc Ecko's Getting Up -- all spray painting/tagging style games that provide better experiences in the genre. Overall, I still recommend Sludge Life for the great vibes, gross yet surreal world with fun side activities, enjoyable exploration, and some trippy to fun endings and characters to meet and experience.
