I have been curious to play this game since it came out but i've always felt like it could be a little boring... And it was very boring for the first 2 hours, but after you actually understand how the game works and get used to the mechanics it becomes awesome. However i'd say it's coolest features are also it's biggest flaws; this game's unique mechanics (character movement, mapping, the fever, finding plants) are what makes it shine, but since they are a bit too realistic and overcomplicated they can become discouraging and frustrating sometimes. This was quite an experience, beautiful game.
Really good survival/exploration game. This is quite an interesting game. You're dying of a plague and have ventured to a tropical island rumoured to hold scientists working on a cure. Getting there, the only scientists you find are fresh corpses killed in some struggle, and start collecting their notes trying to piece together the cure they've developed. The gameplay is mostly exploration: you've given a map but no helpful cursor appears to mark your position. You must instead use landmarks like structures or the strange statues dotting the island to determine your position. Your movement is momentum based, feeling more like you're driving your character. It felt strange, but I understood the reason the first time I went too fast down a slope and ate ♥♥♥♥: you're supposed to be careful how you move. You'll find maps indicating new points of interest to head to, and as you travel you'll spot plants to make medicine from or new structures to check. The visuals are very good, and watching the sunlight filter through the trees is beautiful. The wildlife is an interesting addition: mostly there for set dressing as your character doesn't need to eat or hunt. Watching a little bunny hop through the grass as you travel. Of course, when the birdsong stops and you can't see any animals you feel a sense of impending dread. The game is quite janky: the movement takes some getting used to, especially going up hills. Some of the animations look a bit scuffed, but thankfully you can skip most of the long medicine making ones. There are plenty of items to pick up but most of them are just used for throwing and distractions. I even had a few bugs where my camera locked after reloading a save. But nothing a quick relaunch didn't solve. All in all I really like this. It's clearly an indie passion project with a small team, and makes a very relaxing survival experience. It's about exploring, mapping out the strange island. Finding new things.
Miasmata caught my attention for its original idea and genuinely different gameplay. Its beautiful scenarios create an immersive world that feels both mysterious and alive. The strong sensation of solitude makes every discovery feel personal and meaningful. It's a unique and unusual experience, for anyone looking for something beyond conventional triple A games.
Many years have passed since I played it, hopefully I forgot the map and can replay one day, waiting for this with anticipation. One of the best game like ever. It is about making the map and some horror element that try to prevent you from doing it, but it is more about atmosphere. Didn't find anything like it.
