Happy to have given this a chance and its an easy recommend for me, for the fair price (especially on sale) Its an interesting mix of strenghths that play to my preferences, and weaknesses that I can overlook On first impression, the UI grap, hics and presentation feel a bit dated, it kind of sits in the uncanny valley where its nothing too impressive, but also not bad *enough to be retro or stylized. I would call it mostly solid programmer art. At the end of the day though, the gameplay just hits the sweet spot for me where its not overwhelming like a 4X game, but not too oversimplified either. Craft some custom lasers, go mining, or fill your hold with missiles at the missile factory and sell them at the space station a few jumps away. A bit of zoom zoom and a bit of pew pew, get rich and build a fleet of ships. it feels like it has imperfect but serviceable mix of activities catering to a few different playstyles simultaneously (miner, trader, bounty hunter), while not overwhelming you with menus or stats, or requiring you to micromanage or put out fires inside of your ship. Just fly around, until you have bigger ships, with more lasers. The fact that you get a little squad of companions following you around or manning your turrets is very cool, and since outfitting ships is my jam, outfitting 10 ships is just even more jam to jam. Dont get me wrong Im seeing a lot of room for improvement still in nearly every aspect, some weird menu quirks, control quirks, trade goods distribution and prices that manage to be both too predictable and too arbitrary at the same time. Asteroid fields tend to be pretty boring which is not too surprising. But it does enough right to get by without doing enough wrong to drive me away. Ive bounced off of dozens of other space games made by much bigger teams, chasing that perfect successor to freelancer or star control. And Ive given most of those other titles much smaller playtimes. Something about this game just works, and has kept me grinding economy, mining asteroids, blasting space pirates til 3am a few nights in a row. Seems this game has been around in EA longer than I realized until now, but my advice to the dev is still to refine what you already have in the core systems. I want more interesting things to salvage. More kinds of missions, more kinds of space station to encounter. more variety and logic in where trade goods are found and priced. Interesting asteroid fields full of surprising resources or hidden treasures. I do worry with the first DLC that you are starting to go in new directions while the core gameplay styles and systems are still only 80% of the way there. I still bought it because I like to support independant projects like this. Either way, good luck and congratulations on getting this far, I really appreciated my time with your game, and I hope If I revisit it in a few more years time Ill be amazed that the game evolved from a jack of all trades and was eventually polished into a true gem.

I love this game, bought it in early access and have come back to it for every update. You can chill and avoid combat with mining and trading, you can go full combat and engage several enemies, you can go it solo or with a fleet of companion ships. There is a story chain set of missions that explain the lore of the game which is optional but yet still it is a sandbox where you are not forced to do any of those things or you chose to do them all at once. I have not reviewed it in the past due to laziness on my part but with the current slew of review bombs regarding the new reactor heat mechanic I felt the need to defend the developer who has since patched the mechanic twice to accommodate their complainants. If you enjoy top down space games like Starsector, Star Vortex, Reality Break or any in slew of these type of games, Star Valor is worth your money and your time as it is just different enough to give it its own flavor.

This is the only game where I have unlocked all the achievements because it was fun, they provide in-game benefits, and you can choose up to 5 of them for a new run. The amount of customization in all areas of the game is amazing! For me, it's the best game in its genre. The developer listens to and cooperates with players to add and improve gameplay. That's rare! I can't believe what some people are saying to the dev for making some of the changes while he's actively adjusting them! And it only took one day to fix the somewhat punishing overheat mechanic! Not fast enough for drama queens, apparently. Don't punish the developer for exploring new gameplay options. The game was fun a long time ago; that's why so many of us have hundreds of hours in it, but it's still being improved. Drama queens: If, after hundreds of hours, you can't say anything nice about the game, at least be patient. You don't encourage an already cooperative developer with a negative review; you are hurting the game's sales and, therefore, future improvements!

Absolutely enjoyable game. Factions, mining, combat, Pirating, fleet or solo, crafting, looting, such a more-ish game that has hours fly by and feeling energised the wntire time! Highly replayable. Would love to see co-op added. 9.5/10

This game is gem which is kinda addictive. Just another level, just another new skill, just another new system to explore! Does this new explored station sell me the ship pattern I am looking for? Is my build strong enough for this pirate fleet? Will they destroy my space station or can I still manage? 'Why I always run out of cah? Why is this system just out of warp range? Yes a finally a new ship! But ouch, it has more mass and is way harder to manouver, need more staff and much more energy to warp! It is very fun to progress. Each new module you fit into your ship change either the flight behavior, or gives more chances on loot or advantages in the battle. Leveling up is meaningful and balanced. So if this game is on your pile of shame, dust it off and give it a chance. You will have more fun then with many grafic polished space titles! Cheers and leave me a comment if you share this experience!
