Star Wars, for me, is primarily a video game franchise. While I've seen some of the films, my fondest memories are tied to games like Knights of the Old Republic and Dark Forces. When I boot up Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, nostalgia hits hard with references to characters like Kyle Katarn and the infamous droid 8T88. But is it as good as I remember? I know the original Dark Forces is a classic, pioneering features like multi-floored levels and vertical movement, and it remains enjoyable even with its dated graphics. However, I hadn't revisited Dark Forces II in over 22 years. After struggling to get the game running on modern hardware, I finally managed to play it with 3D acceleration. LucasArts was exceptional at FPS games, and it's a shame they produced so few. Jedi Knight opens with a blaster instead of a lightsaber, emphasizing Kyle Katarn's skills before introducing Force powers. The game gradually adds abilities like Force Run and Jump, requiring players to discover them without tutorials—an approach that feels refreshing today. The lightsaber combat is satisfying, allowing players to deflect blaster shots and engage enemies without the complexities of modern games. The game’s pacing is also noteworthy; it takes time to develop, with the first few hours focused on exploration and skill-building. Jedi Knight offers a level of enjoyment that feels luxurious compared to the shorter, more linear experiences of many contemporary FPS games. Should you still play Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II? Definitely! I can't emphasize enough how fantastic this game is. After experiencing any modern single-player FPS, it's a revelation to dive into this title and appreciate the depth, intricacy, and masterful design that the genre can achieve.

This game is old. Don't play for the gameplay; don't play for the graphics. The story is decent. But if you're looking to reminisce on a game you grew up on, or want to experience Star Wars/gaming from the ancient world, this game is a good sample. What's fascinating about this game is that it came out before The Phantom Menace, so there are a few unique features of what Star Wars was like before the Prequels. One such example is that the term "Sith" didn't exist back when this game was made, so the bad guy Force wielders were called "Dark Jedi". So yes, for an experience of Star Wars back in the day, or even videogaming back in the day, this game is a good sample. I don't think it's worth more than one or two playthroughs of the story, however. The story itself is passable. It's not overly complex, but it's descent. It has cutscenes, which have lower render quality than a flip phone, and the acting is sub-par, but the story isn't bad. And there are two options: light side and dark side. The dark side doesn't really offer anything other than some cool Force powers. It's not difficult. May die a few times, but I beat it in under 10hrs.

A bit of time capsule since it contains live action cut scenes that were more common in games made during this time, and that don't have the best acting or CGI. But game play is solid and has a unique story that puts it among the best games in the franchise (with possibly the highest stakes, higher than in any of the movies). It's also revolutionary in it's system of how your actions in game and what force powers you work toward affect your ultimate alignment toward the light or dark sides.

Played this game when I was a kid on a Windows 98 and it's just as gritty as I remember it. This one isn't just about nostalgia, I definitely feel like this is one of the best SW games next to Jedi Academy as far as story and gameplay are concerned. 10/10

This game was my childhood. Even after all these years, I still know where each enemy spawns during the first few levels. If you grew up on LucasArts games, you have experienced the Star Wars golden age. Still waiting on that remaster...
