It provides the quintessential, cinematic "Star Wars fantasy" that lets you rise from a mysterious Republic soldier to a powerful Jedi Knight (or Dark Lord of the Sith). 🌌 Pros: The Ultimate Star Wars Epic - Iconic, Cinematic Storytelling: The narrative captures the grand scale of the original film trilogy, culminating in one of the most legendary, jaw-dropping plot twists in video game history. - Unforgettable Companions: From the sarcastic bounty-hunting droid HK-47 to the noble Jedi Bastila Shan, the Ebon Hawk's crew is incredibly distinct, witty, and rich with deep backstories. - Exceptional World Building: Exploring pre-Empire versions of iconic worlds like Tatooine, Kashyyyk, and Korriban four thousand years before the movies feels both fresh and nostalgic. - Pure Star Wars Power Fantasy: The game flawlessly translates the d20 tabletop rules into a real-time-with-pause combat system, making constructing your first lightsaber and unlocking Force powers feel uniquely rewarding. ⚠️ Cons: What to Keep in Mind - Dated 2003 Engine: The base animations, menus, and low-polygon characters show their age. - Steam Compatibility Flaws: The game is notoriously difficult to run flawlessly on modern Windows 10/11 machines out of the box, frequently requiring community workarounds for crashes, broken resolutions, and movie-playback bugs. - Sluggish Opening Planet: Taris, the massive multi-layered city world where you spend the first 5–8 hours of the game without a lightsaber or Force powers, can feel slow on repeat playthroughs. 🛠️ Recommended Mods (The Modernization Setup) - Because the Steam version lacks native modern widescreen support and up-to-date graphic options, installing a few mods from platforms like Nexus Mods or DeadlyStream is crucial: - KOTOR 1 Community Patch (K1CP): An absolute necessity that acts as an unofficial master fix, repairing hundreds of lingering gameplay bugs, broken quests, and clipping textures. - Flawless Widescreen: An external tool used by the community to force the game into modern 1080p, 1440p, or ultrawide resolutions without stretching the HUD interface. - KOTOR HD Overhaul (by Xarwynn): Completely updates the game's blurry 2003 environment, clothing, and weapon textures into crisp, high-definition models. - High Quality Skyboxes (by Kexikus): Swaps out the original flat, pixelated space and planet backgrounds for beautiful, modern 3D planetary horizons.
First, I just want to say that this game requires A LOT of modding. If that is not something you are willing to do, I would personally buy a copy or emulate this game for Xbox and avoid this version. If you are willing to put in a decent amount of time, you can mod out many of the terrible bugs that are present in the Steam release (and you need to because there are hundreds) with the Community Patch (I recommend downloading most mods from Deadlystream), and you can improve it to make it the best looking version and restore content originally cut from the game. There are still tons of bugs (the movement bug after most instances of combat is my personal bane, even after applying the fixes to refresh rate, vsync and AMD Chill which reduce it somewhat), the map is so miniscule it is barely usable on a widescreen 4k TV (on that point, I recommend an enlarged text mod which increases text size from microscopic to barely legible), and the game will also crash often on save so make sure you have multiple saves and rely on autosave. It really is a chore to run this version of the game, but I still would recommend it if there is a steep Steam sale, and I feel like my $2 purchase was worth it for how great of a game this is.
I would gladly sell my soul to Larian if they remade this masterpiece of a game in the style of Baldur's Gate 3. Yes, it's outdated and a pain to run on modern hardware, but to this day there is no Star Wars game that ever topped this diamond in the rough as far as story goes. Also Bastila Shan. ALL HAIL LORD REVAN!
