March 2025
This game, man. This game. So. Point-and-click games aren't really my thing. They're annoying pixel hunts. But this game had a high rating on Steam, and I've played Myst before, so hey, might as well give it a try, right? Well. Long story short, this game is GREAT. There's this thing that the best puzzle games do, and that's recontextualize your experience so far. You might realize, a good way into the game, that this thing you've seen since the start was actually useful in some way you didn't expect, and now you have to go back and find all the spots with the thing. Or it could be plot-related, where everything you've done up until now has a new meaning. Some games that do this include Supraland (always gotta give them a shout-out for this), The Witness, Animal Well, and Tunic, just to name a few. Submachine has managed to join this list as a game that pulls it off. Furthermore, I'm most of the way through (with still PLENTY to do, I'm pretty sure), and I've filled pages and pages of notes and maps. It's not La-Mulana-level note-taking, but there's still quite a bit of it. Having to take notes to play a game is *my* definition of a good time, so I'm very happy with this. On the more boring side of things, the graphics are beautiful, the sound is beautiful, and the controls are mouse-only plus ESC for pausing (though I think you could also use a gamepad, but I'm not), which is wonderfully simple. I don't think these are why you should play the game. I think you should play the game because the puzzles are very interesting and often also very challenging, in kind of a macro level; they rely more on being observant than solving riddles. Great puzzles. If I have to pick one negative, it's this: one of the optional chapters appears about halfway through the game, and you can do a lot in that optional chapter but you can't actually finish it at this point, and the game doesn't tell you. I ran around aimlessly for upwards of an hour trying to find the way forward, only to give up and look up the solution. I'm glad I did that, because the very first thing the solution says is that if you haven't completed all of some particular objective in the game, you can't actually solve this. So I immediately closed the guide and continued on with the rest of the game. I plan to return to this chapter once I've done everything else. I just think the game could have somehow told me that I can't actually do the thing. So that's my only negative. If you come across an optional chapter that seems like it should be possible but isn't, you should leave it for later. Yeah, to sum up, Submachine is fantastic and you should definitely play it if you enjoy puzzles so hard that you need to take notes (which I most definitely do). I may update this review once I actually finish the game, but based on my experience so far, it's already been worth the time and money many times over. Play it! EDIT: All right, having beaten the main game and moved onto the post-game, my complaint from earlier turns out to actually be a big deal. I still think this game is great, don't get me wrong, but it does actually become a pixel hunt at that point, with some stuff you need to figure out that isn't hinted at. I think the game should have some sort of secret detector that lets you know when you're near one, because they're tiny and you're just not going to see them. Going through the levels again and finding them would be a lot more enjoyable if I didn't have to consult a guide after searching for a long time. That said, the game doesn't stop being awesome.

There are 10 chapters in this game, and several bonus chapters. Here are my thoughts during my 7.5 hour playthrough: Chapter 1. Oh this is a cute little puzzle game! Beautiful artwork, haunting music and clear sound effects. Chapter 2. Cool! Some fun new areas to check out. This game is going to be awesome! Chapter 3. Looping rooms, original puzzles, my brain is getting a workout! Proud of myself for winning! Chapter 4. No guide. In a lab now, kind of stuck. I'll get through it, I'll just try clicking everywhere! Chapter 5. Story is getting interesting now. I can teleport??? The puzzles are a little....weird.... Chapter 6. New gameplay with hacking alien computers. Cool. I'll just click everywhere to open everything. Chapter 7. What the cheese have I done. OH WHY did I start this game? Tired. I need a pen and paper. Chapter 8. My ... brain ...hurts...multiple realities? overlapping each other? What if REAL LIFE was like this? Chapter 9. I don't know which way is up anymore. These ancient temples are confusing. Major brain fog. Chapter 10. I pushed a button, now I must go search 10 different realities 200 screens to see what changed? I think I'm done. Brain hurts, headache, sweating, need a shower. 9 /10 Some of the most ingenious puzzles ever created, but are they FUN??

The hand-drawn graphics, atmosphere, sound treatment, and story are just great... really well done! However, be prepared to carefully scrutinize every single screen and take notes... you're gonna need to! The occasional puzzle that is so abstract you might have to start doing a lot of guesswork, backtracking, and pixel searching. There's a few puzzles that are just not going to be obvious to anyone, and so patience is required. There aren't many... and most of the puzzles are fun... but those few... ugh. I very much recommend this game for experienced puzzle lovers. If you're impatient, you might find yourself checking the internet for hints. Still, I'll give it a thumb's up.

One of the best, if not THE best game in the genre. This is essentially a bundle of all submachine games, except they're reworked, interlinked, polished and turned into one big unbroken experience, all the while providing you with ability to go back to any chapter and explore some more! Sound effects and music were upgraded, but thankfully you have an option to change some sound effects to classic ones. I really missed the original metallic 'thunk' of room traversal. What are you waiting for? Get this game, dim the lights, put on your headphones, nab a pen and some paper and get ready to explore the submachine, one room at a time!

Short version: If you like point and click puzzle games and haven't played Submachine, you need to play it. Learn your roots. You Will thank yourself. It's a masterpiece Long version: Like a lot of people, I played the series back in the flash days. I was pretty young though, so I never got to the final chapter because I didn't feel smart enough, lol. Playing back through the series was amazing, and I love how well Legacy knits all of the chapters together. There are so many things I love about this game, from the handrawn art to the riveting atmosphere and story, to the mind-bending, one of a kind puzzles. It has a world you could get lost in, and a subtle but (in my opinion) perfect soundtrack that sets the tone really well. I was a kid when I first played these games, and I spent a lot of time imagining being a Subnet explorer. When I got to the end, I cried because of how much this series means to me. It felt so good to play these games again, and all I want is for more people to experience the wonder and awe that I have. Submachine: Legacy just well might be the best point-and-click out there.
