It's a great game to play through once, but there's not much there that will make you want to come back. It's not immediately clear how much there is to the game. The tech tree looks very barren at the start of the game, because a decent part of the tech tree is hidden for most of the game until you send your exploration submarines to investigate relevant points of interest. Even so, I was left with a feeling at the end of the game that the tech tree was lacking. Except for a couple of branches that I chose to skip I had the entire tech tree by the end of the game so there isn't much of a question of a next run being different (as you could with a game like Frostpunk). I really like building a city underwater (much Bioshock, so SOMA), and this definitely scratches that itch. Perfecting your clones using samples found in the different underground biomes is also a fun and innovative mechanic. Unfortunately none of it really stands out. Your holy clone grail is a clone whose lifespan isn't counted in days and doesn't come with any of the 4 defects that they can have. Once you have that, you have your perfect clones and finding new biomes is no longer exciting. You can't min-max their workspeed, or make your clones more food-efficient. That feels like a missed opportunity. There's only "low quality" and "high quality" food. High quality food requires you to sacrifice one of the biome habitats that you've discovered. Unfortunately it won't be a hard choice since you'll have plenty of bad ones you won't want to use for cloning anyway. Maybe if some of the species had better food production, or special effects on your clones that could compete with the cloning lab's need for them the choice could've been an interesting one to make. I'm sure the developers had plans to do more with this game, and it's really unfortunate that they didn't. There's many missed opportunities. Lastly I'm pretty sure my map was a little bugged when the game tasked me to explore a new biome, only to stumble into the final zone instead, the actual target biome being hidden behind it in the corner. Apart from some initial confusion (and some flavour text not making sense) this didn't really hinder the game any further. All in all, I do recommend this game. But you need to go in with the expectations of playing the game once for the setting and the story, and realize you'll probably never boot it up again afterwards.

After some further development the game has come out solid. Good atmosphere and some decent story telling for a city builder.

It's a good game. I don't think it deserves the negatives, especially since last couple of updates. The vibe makes it quite unique comparing to other colony builders/simulations. It's eerie, forces you to plan and use your brain. And it's quite immersive - scarce resources, constant fight to manage your oxygen and ensure your colony is well lit - you really feel like you were stuck deep underwater. I thought I couldn't get this immersion again after Subnautica, but the creators of Surviving the Abyss has proven me wrong.

Despite the apparent abandomnent from the publisher, the game managed to come out, it's a 7/10. It lacks the 'oompf' of Surviving Mars, so surprisingly it's more chill as most of the perils would be self made rather than external. Wish it had more depth but it's fine for what it is. Hope they do DLC or something but I don't think they would.

I've seen a few of the reviews talking about the game being abandoned, which I never quite understood. There was a few months without updates, but often preceded large updates. The game has come a long way since i first got it. Nearer its launch I couldn't stomach more than an hour or two. It was a near concept but just shallow and not very good at drawing you in. Now, years later, I cant get enough. There are still some things to fix, and some ideas that could be better executed. BUT the claims that game game is abandoned are, at this point, completely incorrect. If you are flipping through reviews, please discard any 'abandoned game' reviews. Base it off of the other reviews of pro's and cons. I love the concept, and I think it is challenging and fun. To-date, its the only city builder that made me acknowledge, and actually feel like i had limited resources. Frost punk, Manor Lords, sure they had limited resources... but the resource starvation never quite feels like a threat. Here you have finite resources and never quite feel like you have enough. Fighting what lurks in the dark while trying to have enough people to go around feels challenging even on the into mission. i for sure recommend this game. May not be your forte, but it FEELS like your trying to survive the abyss. You have to want to survive.
