Suzy Cube is a colorful and earnest 3D platformer developed by NorthernBytes Software and published by Noodlecake that wears its inspirations proudly while carving out a modest identity of its own. Designed as a love letter to classic 3D platformers, the game embraces familiar conventions—tight jumping, collectible-driven progression, and clearly structured stages—while packaging them into a compact indie experience that favors charm and accessibility over reinvention. From the moment players step into its bright, blocky world, it’s clear that Suzy Cube aims to recapture the joy of straightforward platforming rather than overwhelm players with complex systems or narrative ambition. The premise is intentionally simple and lighthearted. An evil group known as the Skulls has stolen the treasure of Castle Cubeton, and Suzy, a cube-shaped adventurer with plenty of personality, sets out to reclaim it. This story exists primarily as motivation rather than a focal point, serving as a framing device that carries players across multiple themed worlds. Each world introduces new visual motifs and obstacles, creating a sense of progression while keeping the focus squarely on movement and exploration. The lack of heavy storytelling works in the game’s favor, allowing players to concentrate on the core pleasure of navigating levels and collecting treasures. Gameplay is where Suzy Cube shines most consistently. Movement feels responsive and deliberate, with jumps, double jumps, and midair adjustments offering a satisfying sense of control. Precision platforming is central to the experience, and the game is generally fair in how it tests players’ timing and spatial awareness. Levels are built around clearly readable layouts that encourage forward momentum while also rewarding curiosity. Coins and blue stars are scattered throughout stages, inviting players to explore alternate paths and hidden corners rather than simply rushing to the goal. Level design strikes a comfortable balance between challenge and approachability. Early stages are forgiving and tutorial-like, easing players into the mechanics, while later levels introduce trickier jumps, moving platforms, and environmental hazards that require more careful execution. Boss encounters appear at the end of worlds and provide a change of pace, though they tend to follow similar patterns and rely more on repetition than creativity. While these battles are serviceable, they are not the game’s strongest moments and can feel less inspired than the platforming that leads up to them. Visually, Suzy Cube adopts a bright, cubic art style that reinforces its playful tone. Environments are clean and colorful, with a toy-like quality that keeps the mood upbeat even during more demanding sections. The simplicity of the visuals helps ensure clarity during fast movement and tricky jumps, though it also means the world can sometimes feel a bit uniform. Animation is smooth and expressive enough to give Suzy personality without distracting from gameplay, and enemies are clearly designed to communicate their behavior at a glance. Audio presentation is functional but modest. Sound effects provide clear feedback for jumping, collecting items, and defeating enemies, contributing to the tactile feel of movement. The music is cheerful and fitting, though it can become repetitive during longer play sessions due to limited track variety. While the soundtrack does its job in maintaining an upbeat atmosphere, it lacks the memorability that often elevates classic platformers into something truly iconic. Replay value comes primarily from completionist goals. Collecting all blue stars unlocks bonus stages and a secret world that ramps up difficulty, offering a rewarding challenge for players who want to fully master the mechanics. These optional objectives add depth to the experience and encourage revisiting earlier levels with improved skills. However, outside of these collectibles, the game does not offer significant alternate modes or branching paths, keeping the overall scope focused and contained. Community reception reflects this balance of strengths and limitations. Many players praise Suzy Cube for its tight controls, nostalgic feel, and approachable design, especially as a budget-friendly indie title. At the same time, recurring criticisms mention camera behavior that can occasionally feel restrictive and a general lack of innovation compared to its inspirations. These issues rarely break the experience, but they do highlight the game’s reliance on familiar formulas rather than bold experimentation. Overall, Suzy Cube succeeds as a polished, affectionate homage to classic 3D platformers. It delivers a consistently enjoyable experience built on solid movement, readable level design, and a cheerful presentation that makes it easy to recommend to fans of the genre. While it doesn’t push boundaries or redefine what a 3D platformer can be, it offers a satisfying adventure that captures the spirit of old-school platforming in a compact, accessible package. For players seeking a straightforward, feel-good platformer that prioritizes fun over flash, Suzy Cube stands as a charming and worthwhile journey. Rating: 8/10

Suzy Cube follows what Mario 3D Land did closely with the way the levels are designed, the power ups you can use and the gameplay that goes along with it. It does it pretty competently even if it’s not as good, obviously. There are 5 worlds with around 4 normal levels, one special level and one boss each. You can also unlock a special world with more levels depending on your progress. They tend to be a bit different and more challenging in some cases. The game has a good style, the music is not bad, the controls are mostly fine and the achievements are generally good. The design of the levels is the best part of the game. They’re pretty varied, short and most of the stars are well hidden in a good way. It’s not perfect as there are some minor issues with a couple of aspects. Let’s start with the controls, the ability to break stones does not register properly every time. You press double jump but it doesn’t always work. Either the timing is very particular or there is something seriously wrong. Even though the achievements are mostly good, I’m not happy about 2 of them. One requires you to grind to get 99 lives and the other is bugged with the last update the game received. You have to download a previous update to get the achievement for collecting all the stars from S world. While the stars are generally well hidden, a few rare ones are hidden in a cheap way. You have very few options in the settings menu, I might have only seen the sound settings. I’ve actually completed the game before on the iPad, there the controls were even worse because using the stick to move didn’t feel like true analogue movement. Luckily, that doesn’t seem to be the case with the steam version. Otherwise I would have been harsher. Still though, willing to play the game a second time is good sign towards it. It’s a fun game, a good fix if you’re looking for a platformer, it’s dirt cheap on sale and it takes 5+ hours to get most of the achievements. I’m still slowly farming for the 99 lives one and then I’ll get the last achievement by switching to an old version of the game. I recommend the game to fans of the genre as long as the expectations are kept in check.

Basically an indie clone of Super Mario 3D Land. Gets a little repetitive with the environments and even the level layouts, but overall it's a good time, and it's clearly a budget title that has enough polish to avoid annoyances. The bosses may aggravate, be warned.
