I'll definitely check back in the future, but there is absolutely potential in this game. Tried it due to some kind words toward it by Face Full of Eyes on Youtube, in his RoN video. I too am tired of RoN's violent approach to this genre, so apologies for the comparisons. Some thoughts: -environments are good enough, and can be quite detailed. However, they can look quite empty in other situations, mainly due to being overly large. -scenarios have interesting elements (like the dogfighting ring), but overall feel like they're just checking off boxes. I like some of their depictions of brutality, however like RoN, there's little thematic setup. They sorta appear and that's it. I would've preferred if they poured all their momentum into fewer, more crafted missions. Special dialogue, music, animations, etc would've been nice. They don't need to be elaborate, just believable and with effort. -controls are fine, but as of now, characters lack weight. It feels floaty enough for me to have trouble placing myself. -sound feels kinda muted. Shootouts are not as loud and upsetting as they probably should be. In fact, sometimes it's hard to determine if you're being shot at and requires seeing a muzzle flash. Police voice acting/writing is generally poor, in contrast to the relatively good suspect/civilian acting. -I was under the impression this would be a less combative take on the SWAT genre. I had not noticed any large difference between SWAT Commander and RoN as far as engagements, other than the overall NPC count being lower. Almost all interactions are instant shoots or hitting F for compliance. There are some animations that suggest grey decisions, but I believe they're predetermined right/wrong. This has something going on--I just wish some of their priorities were rearranged. I hope to see this team's progress soon!
EDIT: After putting another 50 hours into Ready Or Not, I realized this is the better game, simply because in this game a head shot. or shot to the unarmored torso of a enemy kills them, it sometimes takes two shots, but the enemies are not the super invincible, shoot through walls one hit super men that seem to be the standard for the Ready Or Not game, and it makes this game a lot more fun, and fair. This is a pretty good SWAT game, but it really really needs a key bind option for each element red, blue, and gold, cycling through 3 groups every time you want to give a command is tedious and silly considering the countless keys on a keyboard. Carte blanche this game is a READY OR NOT wannabe, it has so many parallels, if Nintendo was involved there would be 8 new international patents. This game also needs a way to que up orders for multi point breaches, that is half the epic fun of these games and its missing here.
Unlike RoN this game is not a realism game it is a shooter and it is SWAT. It is very enjoyable and it is exciting but because it is not as photo realistic it lacks the emotional ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I love it. Don't get me wrong I love RoN and the realism, but sometimes it is just fun to play a shoot em up. That is my opinion, just as much tactical fun but less OMG I died crap. LOL
Swat Commander might appear on the surface to be a budget RoN, but in my view it is right up there with the Swats & Ready or Nots of the world. Personally I feel it more closely resembles Swat 3 mixed with Rainbow Six 3. It isn't trying to be Ready or Not, really, they just fall in the same genre of game. The A.I. here is unpredictable and keeps you on your toes but they also sometimes are impervious to flash and gas at times it seems. The unit A.I. is rough, they are not so fluid or responsive. They will enter a room to clear it literally 1 by 1 by 1 by 1 all fragmented and get themselves killed. Suprisingly well rounded out and content rich for an Early Access, in time no doubt there will be more and more features added such as the ability to have them toss grenades into the windows in the recent update which is really cool. I'm checking back in on it often.
