March 2026
Synergy is an eco-city builder set in a world after an unspecified apocalypse. Our goal is to build a functioning, stable city and understand the new rules that govern this world. Rarely does a game place so much emphasis on careful planning and strategic foresight. You need to plan well ahead, adapt and sometimes ditch working strategies because environment changed too much. A predatory economy only brings short-term benefits, while careful management mixed with pro-ecological activities (seed farms, bird nests, etc.) improves the quality of the map, which translates directly into increased citizen satisfaction and a greater safety margin for the player. At this point you’re probably wondering why I put so much emphasis on safety and strategy – it’s because this game forces you to balance on tightrope, way more than any competition. It is far less tolerant of mistakes, and if you fail, repairing your errors is incredibly hard. To be perfectly honest, habits from similar games are a hindrance not an advantage, here. Among the negatives are minor issues stemming from the game's design and (presumably) budget constraints, as well as various bugs – minor, major, and everything in between. Sometimes you can ignore them, but in other situations you either have to reload your save or restart the game. Unfortunately, the cities themselves are quite lifeless, and you don't really see our residents moving around, going to the canteen, or playing in parks. The game places a strong emphasis on ecology, yet flora dominates the game, with minimal presence of fauna. In any self-respecting ecosystem, fauna is an integral part of it. In my opinion, one of the biggest flaws of the game is the fact that the developers have used tasks such as ‘reach level n of culture/science/prosperity, etc.’ far too often in the final stages of the scenarios. Instead of distributing them in a natural way, they are used as an artificial slowdown that can translate into a real waste of time. Would I recommend it? Yes. Personally, I think that despite its flaws, Synergy truly strives to bring something new to the genre. It's one of the few games where, in addition to building a city, you also build the biome in which it resides. In most games, the environment takes a backseat; you have to tame and reshape it to suit and serve you. Here it's different; the environment is a partner you must nurture and support, because neither can exist without the other. However, it is worth remembering the negatives I mentioned earlier, and the limitations resulting from a small budget. ✅ [*] Unique graphic style. Obviously inspired by French artist Jean Geraud a.k.a. Moebius. [*] Solarpunk aesthetics. You both build up the city and restore the world. [*] Unique building design. Not only can you guess the purpose of a building based on its appearance (which is a plus, especially in larger cities), but the buildings also look as if they were partly built and partly grown. [*] 2 campaigns, each containing 3 scenarios. Depending on the difficulty level, scenario takes around between 5 – 10 hours to complete. [*] Big and well-designed tech tree. To a certain extent, technologies are unlocked naturally. However, some unique upgrades require rare “tablets”. This allows your civilization to unlock technological upgrades or concepts, that would normally be beyond its reach. [*] Ecosystem is alive. You need to research it and learn its interdependencies. It is an integral part of the game. and in fact, an essential factor for victory. [*] You must manage an ecosystem just as you would a city. Nurture some plants and exterminate others, relocate seedlings and plant newly found seeds. It's a lot of work, and neglecting this aspect can lead to resource depletion and the collapse of your city. [*] Game is surprisingly hard, even on normal. Every achieved milestone brings new problems to solve. You’re never safe enough. [*] On higher difficulty levels, your city must change with the environment and seasons. Essentially, your city is simply a part of that biome, and any change can have far-reaching consequences. Both good and bad. [*] Interesting mechanics of specialized districts. They’re both districts in larger cities and cities on their own. [*] Exploration. Similar to mechanics known from Frostpunk, and probably inspired by that game to some degree. 😐 The soundtrack is an average. Cozy, peaceful, etc., but absolutely bland and unlikely to stick with you for long. ❌ [*] I’m finding late game a little bit boring. Once you've stabilized the city and familiarized yourself with the local ecosystem, all that's left to do is complete the remaining objectives, instead of continuous struggle. [*] Final tasks are an artificial obstacle rather than an interesting challenge. [*] Sometimes the assigned collection areas do not disappear when we exit the building view, so we have to repeat the entire procedure again. [*] Sometimes bugs seem to build up and can only be resolved by restarting the game. I'm not sure if this is the fault of the game, the engine used, or if the responsibility should be shared equally. [*] Tutorial should be more extensive. Some essential parts like e.g. temperature map were explained very briefly or hardly at all. [*] There are no noticeable animal species or related research. They are mentioned somewhere in the background, but there are no extensive synergies or attempts to introduce them in order to improve and stabilize the ecosystem. I can guess why this element is missing (an additional level of complexity for the developers), but I think it is wasted potential. [*] Lack of any “lose conditions”. [*] Cities are dead - there should be more animations of buildings and street traffic. Maybe it’s an engine limitation, but it does not work in game’s favor. [*] You can’t build bridges or any other water crossings. On most of the available maps, it is not necessary at all, but on some it would significantly decrease waiting time for the player. [*] Poor quality of an achievements. Most of them boil down to “have x citizens” or “have x prosperity”. On the one hand, you play for yourself, not for achievements; but on the other hand, the developers could have made more effort here. EDIT: Typo.

If you like the art of Jean Giraud aka Moebius you will love this game's visual (also check Scavengers Reign for a smiliar tv show - thank me later) gameplay is also very solid, be patient with the game and enjoy the ride.

[*]Bad balance - too many things become useless too quickly [*]Bad pacing - you are always blocked by shortage of something, while everything else is overflowing [*]Bad QoL - game doesn't even show building ranges correctly [*]Moving building is slow and doesn't preserve settings - replanning is a slog [*]Plenty of crashes That's the point where I should "thumbs down" it. But to be honest - I feel bad about doing so. Graphics, art style and overall atmosphere are pretty good and I feel captivated for some hard to explain reason. IDK. Get in on sale or something.

I'm a big fan of this genre, and therefore I am always looking for a new game to hit the spot. This game did just that, very relaxing music and aesthetics. The plant species and expeditions make this game different enough that it is enjoyable for a veteran city/ colony builder player. 8/10 Hope they bring out some new maps or DLC because I would jump back into it every so often. That being said I got 70 hours out of this, so I take that as a win. Great game... now what next *sigh*

How to heal from exploitative, miserable capitalism-first city builders without painting unrealistic utopic visions. Enjoys near-alien architecture and a flourishing sense of communal welfare. With a six-hour tutorial and a forty hour first scenario this is a ponderous, enjoyable beast!
