A fun little adventure game. It did not have anything as frustrating as old point and click fare. The pixel art was excellent and I enjoyed the cyberpunk noir trappings. The story got surprisingly dark, but the pop-culture references and cats kept the tone balanced. I'm surprised the studio hasn't done a direct sequel, there are plenty of openings for more. If you like a good detective puzzler then give this one a shot.
If you want to experience a nice evening with a classic Noir experience set in a cyperpunk setting then this is the game for you. It's cliche but in a way that feels intentional and plays well into the tropes it presents. The setting is so fascinating and I love the snippets of worldbuilding they present. There was only a small segment that was difficult gameplay wise as everything was easy to figure out and accomplish. I'd say buy when on sale but it's still a solid experience at full price.
I wasn't ready to leave this world. It never felt like I was simply playing through a game; it felt like I'd stepped into a story that had been unfolding long before I arrived, one that would continue long after I was gone. The credits rolled, but a part of me stayed behind, still wondering what became of the people I met and the questions left unanswered. There is a strange sadness in leaving a place where so much still feels unfinished.
Puzzle based gameplay rarely appeals to me, and Tales of the Neon Sea was no exception. Many of its puzzles felt uninteresting and often interrupted the flow of the story. They worked best when they were simple and unobtrusive, giving me a reason to spend more time in deserted areas, explore their hidden corners, and let the tension build before moving on. Despite that, I genuinely enjoyed the game and became quite attached to it. The atmosphere is beautiful, the locations feel alive, and the characters are charming. I also enjoyed the way the characters help one another, especially the sections involving William the cat, which added some fun and memorable side moments. The story begins with a very promising premise involving murder mysteries, buried pasts, powerful institutions, and hidden conspiracies. It almost reminded me of Deus Ex. However, the final resolution felt simpler and more rushed than I expected, as though the story had been wrapped up more abruptly than the rest of the adventure. Given its premise, I was hoping for something more intricate and surprising. The open ending makes me hope for a sequel. I would love to see smoother puzzles focused on exploring the world, its lore, and optional areas. Above all, I hope Noa turns out to be only the tip of the iceberg, leading to a much larger conflict involving political intrigue, government agencies, and hidden powers. Tales of the Neon Sea already has an excellent foundation, and I sincerely hope a sequel will have the opportunity to build upon it.
The pixel art alone is worth getting lost in. Tales of the Neon Sea builds a rich cyberpunk world full of detail, atmosphere, and mystery, with an engaging story that kept me hooked from start to finish. Maybe a few too many puzzles for my taste, but the exploration and worldbuilding make up for it. The main plot definitely carries the experience. Ironically, I connected more with the story itself than with the characters. Still, a beautiful and immersive adventure overall.
