Terra Nil hates its players. A new mechanic is introduced every map, and that mechanic often breaks the way that you have been taught to expect things to work, and for no obvious reason. The new mechanic is inevitably poorly explained, and requires refined sequencing over time as you fill out the map. The specific details required to achieve acceptable sequencing are only revealed progressively, meaning that you can be a significant distance into the map before realising that you’ve done something that makes it impossible to hit an arbitrary target. The only solution at that point is to restart the map from scratch. For example, in the last level you are asked to recycle your buildings once the map appears completely finished, however doing so results in you deleting critical components required to power your space ship before you actually leave. Every map requires you to achieve very specific ratios of different biomes to progress, and what biomes can go where often requires significant refinement. This can mean, for example, that you start flooding rivers and establishing vegetation on the banks, only to later discover that this has prevented you from setting up certain other conditions that require empty creek beds to achieve. At this point the only solution is normally to restart the level. Each map is very finely balanced in terms of resource production, but this typically only comes to a head when you’re nearing one of the three interim transition goals within a map. This means that if you do too much of this and not enough of that you will only discover this after you've been happily building away for some time, unaware of the resource cliff that is approaching. At this point the only solution is to restart the level. Accepting that this is a game, and there is a lot of suspension of disbelief involved due to the abstraction, but particularly jarring to me was that game routinely requires you to achieve ambient temperatures significantly exceeding what would normally be conducive to most animal and plant life. Honestly, just re-scaling the temperature range to something around half of what the game keeps requesting would be simple, and enough. On any objective level Terra Nil fails as a game, but it looks pretty and the animations are relaxing, which in this case seems to be enough for me. As a result I am giving it a grudging thumbs up, however your tolerance for the game's very many rude hand gestures directed at the player may vary. I guess I must be a masochist.

It's a reverse city-builder in which you help Mother Terra reclaim a damaged world. It has an almost cathartic feeling baked into its relaxing game-play loop. Very beautiful, very zen. Recommended.

I enjoyed restoring the wasteland and figuring out the best way to clear the objectives while doing so. Even though I had to restart because there's no information that got revealed during the next phase, I didn't mind. I do like going in blind and adjusting as needed. The sfx and music are so relaxing, too. Looking at the animals that shows up and admiring my map that I worked hard is rewarding. I managed to 100% the game... ...PRIOR to the new update. So, imagine my surprise when I came back with 75% progress because the developer changed a requirement to make the each level 100%. Now they added a photo mode (with no explanation that you can zoom out by clicking the scroll mouse button?) Suddenly, making all the animals happy doesn't really matter as much; as long as you made 1 of each animal groups happy for the photo. In any case, that decision upset me, but not upset enough to not recommend this game. If you haven't played the game and didn't know what used to be, then by all means, come join the party! But if you're a returning player, I hope you're not as bothered by your grade going down as I was.

This is my favourite game. Unfortunately (?), it has ruined me for other games by making me think critically about games premised on environmental destruction and resource extraction.

I started this game because the first few levels were pretty straight forward and didn't have to think too hard. But after I realized there are missions like achieving mini goals, and achieving maximum operation of the biome and animals, I loved the game even more. As the game progresses, the levels turn more into a puzzle in order to achieve all goals. End goal is reconquering and reaching environmental remediation. The art is beautiful, music is peaceful, and sfx provide a even more inclusive game engagement.
