The apothecary of Trubiz is a puzzle game in which a potions manual written in a strange language must be gradually translated and interpreted so that it can be used to create, combine & modify potions for different ailments. For 10 game days, patients come with various health problems requiring diagnosis and treatment; at the end of the game a summary of the success (or otherwise) of the apothecary is shown. Having really enjoyed the translation game Chants of Sennaar, I was keen to play this game. Sadly, the Apothecary of Trubiz was a little disappointing in the end; it was not a bad game, but it could have been much better. Partly this is due to the poor low-quality sepia graphics (compounded by not being able to see all available potions at once as the left hand side of the expanded cabinet disappears off the left of the screen ), and to the lack of some clearer instructions about potion transformations in the game interface itself or in the potions manual. But mostly it is that the translation aspects of the game are, ultimately, not essential for its completion; only a very accurate & detailed translation would truly help and that can't be produced until you've completed the game and know everything (and more) that the book would teach you anyway. Instead it is possible to use purely a trial & error approach throughout (I thought that the "advanced diagnosis" sections in the manual looked useful, but they didn't seem to be accurately helpful in the end). Trial & error is a large part of this game: for guessing the meaning of parts of the manual (these can be changed later), for creating new potions, for determining which ailments are cured by which potions (and which combinations of potions may actually be harmful), for diagnosing what a patient is suffering from given their symptoms, and for suspecting & treating any hidden health problem which may be causing relapses in a patient's condition. The game has two nice mechanics which support this trial & error approach: (a) the current day can be restarted if a potion has not produced the expected change in a patient's health; (b) restarting the game after getting to the end of the 10 days preserves all of the discovered potions and the translations so far. There are a number of achievements available including those for developing and transforming potions, for completing the manual (i.e. finding the missing pages, not for the accuracy of its translation), and for the level of success/failure in diagnosing & treating the patients (leading to one of five different endings).
I'm not really sure about this one...It's very short, and the puzzle around figuring out the language in the book is...not designed well. You can figure out about a third of the book with brute force, then...there's a wall, there's a few things that require such a drastic leap of logic, with literally no hints. The problem is, because you can beat about half of the game with just brute force, it made me hit a wall when i got to the part where you had to actually figure out the language, and there are several words that appear only once, and even after figuring out the puzzle solution, im not sure what those words precisely were. Also, Even with me getting stuck on one page, the game is very, very short, An hour at best, and half of that was spent just trying whatever i could think of to get the last one trick to the potion making, and then applying the solution after i figured it out. It's cheap enough that i tentatively give this a positive rating, but barely so. The overall quality is too good to give this a negative review.
Cute little game, beat all endings in 2.5 hours. Chants of Sennaar adjacent but less focused on exact word translation. You can just kinda figure things out. Most of my time playing was trying to complete the final page puzzle, but with hindsight, this is a common puzzle answer that I find difficult in all contexts. Otherwise, every puzzle has a page that explains exactly what to do if you haven't figured it out yet. HINT FOR FINAL PAGE: What is that SPECIFIC number usually referencing? How can you manipulate that in game?
A very compact, but intriguing game. The "deciphering" part is maybe less prevalent than you might think, since there is also a fair bit of trial and error, but all in all, a valid game, sold at a very reasonable price, that probably deserves more visibility. NOTE: I had some troubles with notes not saving. I would suggest to try to complete "a run" in the same single session, because doing that should result in the notes being surely saved.
