It's okay-ish for a metroidvania game, but the lack of a map is awful - seriously, just look up the fan made map online and save yourself a headache. Gameplay is typical of the genre, bosses everywhere with item pickups; however, the item pickups are not immediately noticeable. They have nothing illuminating them against the background and the camera does not reveal them after a boss fight. Its very annoying to beat a boss, and eventually have to backtrack to the boss room because you failed to notice the item drop. Anyway, this is the thinnest of thumbs-up. The game's annoying, easily fixed design flaws overshadow what should have been a fun, short submarine adventure. The boss fights were fun and challenging, though. So, I'll give it the benefit of the doubt.

Loneliness and isolation. The aquatic ruined world with haunting synth sounds as your companion. This game is a WHOLE vibe.

I don't know how to write about videogames, but I played this game 9 years ago and I still think about it, so thats what the thumbs up here is for me.

Humans have gone... somewhere. Now you're back and you need to find out if there's a why and a wherefore to this unfortunate situation and all you got is a dingy sub vs an ocean of very big angry critters that will destroy you just for not having the decency of being extinct yet. Suffice to say it can be a drag coming in last place in the extinction race.

oh god! I never reviewed this? IMO, it's a borderline masterpiece. As you'll see in other reviews, the game is a series of difficult and memorable boss fights, separated by slow, calm meanderings and exploration amidst beautiful pixel graphics and an incredible ambient OST. Stuck at a boss? Seek out all available upgrades and maybe try another boss, who may open new areas with more upgrades (hence the metroidvania tag). Consulting guides is fine if you don't love the exploration. But also, it's just the bosses here, which is to say that some trial and error learning is to be expected. I've beaten hardcore mode on the PlayStation version which is one hit-instant death. And done the no upgrades playthru on both platforms. So, the normal game is very doable if you're patient and enjoy retrying and perfecting boss fights. A well designed, but challenging experience. I'm also one of those people who fantasizes about living in a world without other people... And undersea to boot? The vibe is very for me. I would have enjoyed more lore, mind you. There is back story, but it is sparse. Excellent Devs with impeccable pixel artistry.
