It's hard to put into words where exactly this game lies in terms of overall genre. You can easily call it an RPG and be on your way, or you could throw on 20 more tags of types and still be just as accurate, but both instances would be selling this game short of what it is and both are equally...insulting(?) in their own way. Where the difficulty comes in labeling this game, describing it is not. This game is fun. Nothing else to say here because nothing else quite describes it well enough beyond that. It's just fun. Sure, there's some wishes and wants, some balancing and polishing, but for a single dev creating this entire game on their own, it's massively impressive and my biggest fear is that some game company snatches this talented individual up for a big pile of money and this game never sees completion. I'll say as a person burned more than a few times by EA games, this game being in EA for 2+ years now always has me nervous, but there's always something on the horizon content wise and they always deliver. What makes this game so enjoyable is love of the craft. There's nothing 'randomly generated' in this game. This dev has (assumedly) made everything in it themselves. Placed every tree, flower, and fence post. In the era of procedural generation, it's a rare sight and to see it so lovingly done is a real treat. No, the graphics aren't groundbreaking but if you've read any of my reviews prior to this you'll know that it doesn't matter to me, and it shouldn't to you either. The graphics are part of this game's charm and if nothing else (more on that in a moment) they add to it with all the other stuff to do in this game. Not to snub procedural generation, there are areas on the map, such as 'hotspots' that appear nearly so, so the game maintains a slight air of 'randomness' to make the world interesting if you decide to park it somewhere to do something for a moment. Very well done, and subtly so. Now for the meat and potatoes - the mechanics. This dev clearly is out to make a fun game before they make some groundbreaking story of an RPG. My ghasts would be utterly flabbered if I looked at their gaming history/library and movie collection didn't find a fantastic mix of fun genre classics like Streets of Rage, Smash Bros, Mario Party, and Skyrim, with a theatre of cult films like Matrix, Die Hard, Enter the Dragon and 300. This game nods to them all in very fun ways and I haven't played a game in a while where I did something and laughed out loud at the result. No spoilers, but there's nothing like building yourself to be a Hoplite and 300 kicking someone into next week, or shield smashing someone 'into the air' only for that phrase to actually mean 'into orbit'. The skills and talents all have something fun and useful. Some more than others, of course, but I haven't found one I didn't enjoy yet so much as 'didn't use as much as something else' instead. Which is a very good problem to have in a game, especially in the other more annoying era of gaming that is 'tiering'. Talents aren't permanent yet, so it allows you to enjoy everything and swap skills on a dime if you want to try something new. Can't say I'd enjoy that long term on a final release but for EA I'm super happy to experiment and bug report. The regions and environments are all superbly crafted and all have their own fun, unique 'thing' about them with nice little quests to do in each from surrounding npc villages and cities, each with their own factions and reputation. Think Skyrim, but simpler, and you definitely won't get your arms chopped off if you accidentally snag a potion out of a shop in front of the owner, you just may need to work back that guy's trust. The mobs are fun, goblins tend to be everywhere and every time I thought I'd seen them all, some new kind of goblin shows up and makes me giggle (umm jetpack goblins are something I didn't know I needed). Still, they're nothing to truly brush off, my character is level 16 now and I still don't really know how to deal with boar riders, they scare the shit out of me. For a constant work in progress, I'm thrilled and in awe at the amount of content already in this game, and seeing more coming all the time I find myself always excited to see this game pop up in my news feed about something. Yeah, there's things I'd like to see addressed because there's a lot of things you get notified about in the game that you actually can't do yet (talent points for tradeskills, for example) but the game also is pretty good about telling you about it too. There's a quest that's a WIP and when you do finally find the NPC when you chat it literally says, "bro, we're working on it, try again later" lol. At least I know it's not broken, ya know? My only gripe isn't REALLY a gripe because I know it's probably just another WIP, but that's crafting. Nothing really SEEMS to be better than anything else other than aesthetic flair. One handers tend to cap out around 35ish 'damage' no matter the magical find or crafted materials you use thus far, Two handers about the same with the exception of a few finds that I have around 50 or 60. Damage seems to come from your skills which is great, but it gets a little boring to travel this massive world from city to city and the blacksmiths have varying cost of items that merely look different. I can buy a lute for 120 gold and it's the same performative boost (so it seems) as the lovely 'ash' lute I bought across the country from the world famous bard for 6300 gold, just prettier. Same with armor. Light, Medium, Heavy. Only restrictions seem to be movement and overall value, but I get my ass beat all the same and it's more about what do I want to look like over actual effectiveness. Again, I know it's a WIP but man was that an expensive learn, not that gold seems to be much of a problem. All that to say, this is a brilliant game that I'm sure the average player of the RPG genre will thoroughly enjoy. I've had plenty of moments where I've found myself chuckling at the humor of the dialogue, laughing at the absurdity of some of the combat crap I've pulled off, and in pure awe of some of the simple but lovely mechanics of everything else that is in this game. There's so much to talk about in this game that the character limit for reviews just isn't enough. There's a very deep, very good crafting system. Inventory is fantastic and even has a search feature. Quests, factions, and rep are everything from straight and simple to deeply complex. Mounts and companions are unique and fun. The world map and travel is as quick or as deep as you'd like it to be. It's all good, there isn't anything more to say about it all. Do yourself a favor and give it a try, it's one of those games where you keep telling yourself, 30 more mins and I'm good, only to find you've missed family dinner and are now eating cold potatoes from the fridge.
