As a game, just ok. As a story...ugly cried at the two thirds point. F**k b'ys, way to hits the feels. Worth the price tag.

This was art hands down, this game made me feel. As an Iraq and Afghanistan veteran this game was cathartic. It didn't pander it didn't try to shove nationalism down our throats this was a real story with depth and meaning. Some of the best money I've spent on Steam in a long while.

After seeing the release TikTok and reading all of the poor comments trying to belittle this game, I bought it out of spite. I don't normally play interactive story games like this, but I loved it. The visuals were great, the controls felt smooth, everything about the game was worth supporting it. People often forget that gaming isn't always about constant action or playing for long periods of time, sometimes it's just about enjoying yourself and enjoying the work other people have put into something. This game I can tell has had much love put into it, and that is worth everything.

Overall, really solid 6-7 out of 10. The story and setting are exciting and depressing, and the voice acting is great. Think Firewatch set in WWI. It's more of a walking sim than anything else, but the story, characters, and sound design are immersive and engaging enough for it to be worth the $12 if you're into that kind of experience. The game is unfortunately really short and relies on some (in my opinion) unnecessary filler- repetitive trench digging quick-time events, cooking, etc. They are fitting some story and character work while these events are happening, but the QTEs really do start to feel dragged out. It's possible they were going for a bit of realism in the monotony of these tasks, but at the same time they skip over a lot of implied action so I don't think that's necessarily intentional. Additionally, the store page screenshots are bit misleading. From the screenshots, it seems like a Firewatch-type story experience with some WWI atmosphere and combat, but there really isn't any. So if you're specifically interested in this for the combat, maybe look elsewhere. The game ran fine on max settings for me (between 90fps and 144fps, depending on the section) but did suffer from the classic Unreal engine stutters when turning the camera. XESS was turned on for me by default, for some reason. The game also didn't appear to have any other upscaling options built in. Shoresy fans might catch a familiar voice, as well.

To the player... if you expect a non stop shooter this is not that, what you'll get is touching and emotional and at times unsettling tales of comraderie and the horrors of war when the guns aren't shooting. To the developers, a simple tiktok scroll led me here and I find myself having to take a moment to reflect on what ive experienced so far, you can really feel the passion you have put into this project. Well done, I can very much remember the last time I had to take a moment to pause mid game to process the experience, that being what remains of Edith finch...please maintain that passion you clearly possess because gaming needs people like you more than ever. From a life long gamer, thank you
