Ik it says i only have about 10 hours of gameplay, but thats Because i got it on console and just now got it on pc. with that said, i have beaten this game over 30 times just because of how good it is. the graphics are amazing for when it was made, the story is probably the best out of a lot of games, and the gameplay has so much to offer. and you gotta love the names they give some of these creatures. thats like 50% of why i play this game is to say "oh look! a Tonglegroplet!" next to my friends and have a straight face.
Good game overall, great story and soundtrack, interesting gameplay and art style. But this game does need polish in a lot of places. 1. The open world tag is straight up misleading, it's a very linear game with no choice and no way to explore previous areas. If you need ingredients for a mutation from previous areas then it's over for that mutation tree quest. 2. Physics and controls are ill-built for platforming. Trebhum slide off and bounce of surfaces too much, and God forbid you need to swap to your AI-controled party members, they'll 100% be wondering somewhere far out of sight. 3. Inventory management sucks. If you pick up 4 items with your leader, the 4th one will bounce far away instead of going into empty party member slots. Looking things up incompendium should really be 1 button. 4. Cave gameplay does get super repetitive after a while, you're spending lots of time to harvest mineral currency that doesn't buy you anything interesting. I would be happy to replace mineral caves with random mutation ingredient chests. If you're a player reading this because the game went on decent sale then buy it.
I write this review years after I finished the game because it sticks in my mind. The cylinder, the group of little bouncy aliens that I brought all the way to the end, the creepy creatures that defy logic. This is as unique as it goes so if you are looking for special experiences - that's it. It is an action adventure game but with heavy emphasis on movement and puzzles. The evolution mechanic reminded me of an old title Evolva. The art style is amazing but that's like the defining feature of ACE Studio. Highly recommended
I like janky AA and I guess I like ACE Team, so I liked this too. It's kinda like a creature stage in Spore, but instead of designing your own creature you apply individual mutations to the members of your tribe (whom you can name!) The game loop is pretty simple: you run away from the (eternal) cylinder for a bit, get to a new area, freely explore around, solve some puzzles, go through some dungeons, gather supplies, then once you're ready - trigger the cylinder and run to the next area. Rinse and repeat until the game ends. There are 4 chapters, but not much changes gameplay-wise, besides minor stuff like being able to learn specific mutations forever. IMO it could've been like 3-4 hours shorter and not lose much, but I enjoyed my time with it nonetheless. It would be a great Steam Deck game, except it doesn't run well on the Steam Deck at all, even on the lowest settings (didn't try DX11 mode though). I dunno why I haven't heard literally anyone talk about it ever, but it's some good jank shi, get it on sale
excellent game. Gameplay is divided into two parts, theres a chase and exploration. during the chase the cylinder will roll at you and destroy everything in its path, you must reach towers that can stop it temporarily. theres multiple routes to these towers so you get some say in how to tackle these chases. once you do, the tower will create a force field that gives you a safe zone. the cylinder will not move until you are ready, and you willingly leave the safe zone. I think the meat and potatoes is in these safe zones, this is where you explore and search for upgrades, food, avoid predators, rescue new trebaums and tackle dungeons occasionally. You may not think it from the trailer but the game has a pretty deep and interesting story. its all told in a very documentary style with a narrator doing his best to channel david attenborough. It works! Hes good. The mysteries of the world and the plight of the trebaum are all interesting, and the cylinder is a great villain. my playtime was 13 hours and thats with me trying to be thorough and explore points of interest. Theres a good variety to see and do, and the sights of the world are really something to behold. I never once found it repetitive and I think its because the game does mix it up. there are different TYPES of chase sequences, and some zones more hostile than others, a wide variety of biomes and every dungeon is unique when you do find them. On top of that each power you can get is unique and i like giving each trebaum a role. Some nitpicks: Do yourself a favor, name them after a function of something. They all have alien names like regolo, vupu, gwelono, etc, and it can be difficult to tell them apart when theyre all crowded together. Especially when you need a specific one. Name your swimmer "fish" or something for example. besides that some bugs in two dungeons in particular, for some reason spawning into dungeons that are holes in the ground and not doorways will occasionally have you clip into the ceiling. You can usually jump and wiggle to set yourself free, but before you jump in a dungeon that opens up as a hole id recommend manual saving. The game autosaves frequently so you wont lose *much* progress if you forget. Lastly, some terrain in the desert area had no collision, causing me to fall through the world. Overall, id highly recommend this if you want a survival style game, like exploration, want to see some crazy critters and want an fun story
