Very atmospheric horror walking simulator game with several "Choose your own adventure" elements via dialog options. The first run through of the game took me 2.5 hours to complete and then I spent another hour to get 100% completion. The game was somewhat short, and left me wanting more, even though I played through the whole game twice. Overall I had lots of fun with it, it sucks you in and it feels like you're in a movie. + The graphics and atmosphere are top shelf. Many times I just stopped to look around the rooms / hallways marvelling in the sights. + The ghosts / monsters are original and well designed. One ghost in particular gave me the super creeps on my first playthrough. This ghost gets under your skin and makes you feel super tense. + The story is original and interesting, with many choices along the way that can affect different storyline branches and endings. + Very minor but the music and ambience in the hotel restaurant was beautiful. - There could have been more achievements for following different storylines and saving certain people at the end of the game. - The whole game could have been a little more challenging, I never died once in my playthrough. - Could use some more side quests and more living people in the hotel to help. Great achievement for an indie development team. Overall 8.5 / 10

This game currently has an overwhelmingly positive rating on Steam so you could be forgiven for thinking it is one of the greatest horror games ever but let me dismiss that misconception - it isn't. It is in many ways just another in the long line of low budget horror games but they really do make the most of their obviously limited resources and budget. The environments are classic low res horror ambience style, with good old tried and true cheap jump scares thrown in for good measure. Character faces are all blurred in a pixelated style, which is a smart way to avoid having to animate expressions and speech movements that all take time and money to create. Speech is also distorted and unrecognisable other than that of the female character who you interact with, which I also suspect was a clever way to save money by not having to hire voice actors. Yet all these sneaky shortcuts and obvious budget constraints are somehow overcome with a memorable if janky horror experience. I am very big on ambience and if a game doesn't have it then I will probably not bother to finish it. I think this is a good example of the kind of horror ambience this game creates: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3415086983 The story isn't exactly Shakespeare but it is actually more involved than it seems at first, even if the game never does really flesh this out in the end. Ultimately this is a mediocre yet perfectly passable budget horror game and it would be hard to thumb it down despite it being a bit scuffed overall. Worth a try but don't let that overwhelmingly positive rating get your expectations up too high

Nice little low-stakes horror walking sim. Sometimes I wanna play something spooky without the stress of being stalked by the most terrifying creature for 4+ hours and this fits that bill nicely. Not the scariest game but its got a good atmosphere and I like the (albeit somewhat unfocused) story decisions you can make that affect the outcome of the game. Plus manic pixie goth girlfriend. Addendum: I will say that based on reviews I read for other similar games on here, some people will probably not find the $8 (I think?) price tag worth the content, unfortunately. But its pretty well done and runs well and the devs seem attentive and willing to address any bugs people might find (I didn't really have any) so it's the kind of game I'm happy to support at that price point. If you're a hyper-critical penny-pincher though, maybe wait until the game is < $5. If you can, though, I'd support at "full" price because it looks like it was made by just 3 devs and those people deserve the money they get for putting something like this together.

This is a yes BUT recommendation. I love indie horror games. A lot. I think part of what makes indie horror appealing to you is if you can find beauty and appreciation in a game's design, it's flaws, and it's innovations. This game hits all those points for me. But if I were to recommend this to someone who hasn't really experienced indie horror before, let me try to set some expectations. Inn Sanity is a very spooky vibe with a bit of mystery and a pinch of choose your own adventure. That's being reductive, but I'm feeling lazy today. This game's visual effects are very cool. You can see it in the trailer. The textures in the game are low res in that VHS horror flavor, but the lighting and the level designs are great. Slightly liminal in nature sometimes which is definitely my jam. People's faces are pixelated and that's explained in game too which is pretty cool. The sound design is also solid. There's lots of little noises here and there that makes the area feel organic. Sometimes you hear stuff happening outside of the Inn, sometimes you hear things in other rooms, it's great for building atmosphere and just making the area feel more real. The horror elements here are also very well executed. There's some horrifying jumpscares. Nothing extremely clever, but very effective. The jumpscares are a little more startling than actually scary, but it's not a cheap trick. Not just a loud shrilly scream for no reason, but not a masterful execution either. Some of the short comings of the horror is mostly in the animations or lack thereof. So this game does clever things to get around technical short comings. For instance, though pixelated faces is explained in the game, it's also a great way to avoid having to worry about facial animations. It avoids the uncanny valley or distractions from weird facial animations so that's an A+ Other things like instead of having to animate a character pulling out a chair to sit down, this game fades to black, and re opens with the character sitting down. It's a little weird looking, but again, if you're into indie horror, you kind of expect these things. The only reason why this starts to affect the game really is sometimes the monsters/threats whatever you want to call them move VERY stiff. Definitely feels like you're just watching an average walk animation. Not very scary or intimidating. Like if someone walks over to you casually, it's not particularly scary. If someone starts scurrying towards you like a zombie Spider-man, that's pretty terrifying. So even though there's a threat lurking around, I've never felt particularly vulnerable or stressed about it. Now for the main reason you'll play this game, the story. The story is really cool. There's enough of a mystery here to keep you playing and trying to figure out what's going on and who to trust the whole game. That's pretty great! The short coming is that this game suffers a lot from translation issues. Sometimes, it's not that bad, but other times, there's a few things that are nonsensical. The voice actress even reads the translation/grammar errors which is even more odd. The translation isn't a deal breaker, but it's definitely distracting sometimes especially when it's read out. Otherwise, if you made it to the end of this rambling, give this game a shot! It's a scary walking sim, with a decent story, cool mysteries, and solid scares
