Edit 2: Comments are off now because people started spamming the section with giant blocks of ASCII art. The carnival is now over, sorry. Edit: Since a lot of people are commenting with the question: No, you can't play co-op with someone who has the original release of the game. Save importing might work - nothing about the format of those files has actually changed - but you'd be on your own in trying that at your own risk. Just so you understand what you're getting: This isn't a remaster or a port to a new engine. This is a rerelease of the original game with a patch. The patch fixes some bugs and adds some QOL along with (poorly/lazily) upscaled textures. Most importantly, the online co-op is back (through EGS) though as far as can be determined, it is not crossplay between platforms. It is still fundamentally the same game on the same engine with most of the same (minor) jank. It includes all of the original deluxe edition/pre-order DLC stuff in the rerelease. As for new stuff: * There's a camera lock-on for ranged attacks and abilities (melee still handles the same even if locked on.) * The UI is updated to show full ally stats as well as giving consumables their own panel. There's also a different panel for KBM players. You must make sure all controllers are unplugged or you'll only get the controller interface, though. The actual keybinds will still work fine, but it may be confusing. * There's a proper Borderless mode. * You can hotswap between characters when solo so you can actually equip and upgrade them in the middle of a level. Sometimes the character you swap to will fall under the world when you do this, but you can just swap again and it'll fix itself. * Even when not directly controlling those characters, they will open up character-specific sealed areas so you don't have to replay the level three times just to get them even if you don't want to swap characters. The exception are the mushrooms and flowers that Andriel can pick up. You must be swapped to her to collect them. * The visuals are very slightly cleaned up besides the texture upscaling and there looks like a slight change to the built-in tonemapping to give things a little more vibrancy. It's extremely subtle, though. Very hard to notice unless you're doing direct comparisons. * Split-screen co-op on PC (two players only.) That's it, really. If you want a review from someone who has around 60 hours on the original release between two platforms: the game itself is still a solid 7/10 and worth playing if you're in the mood for a Snowblind action RPG that isn't quite as good as Return to Arms. It gives a lot of resistance at the start of the game since you tend to be resource-starved, but it gets substantially easier very early in. For a new buyer, if you're in the mood for a number-goes-up hack and slash, you can do far worse than this. For existing owners, you'll have to use your best judgment on whether it's worth another 20USD.
The original game is still a great game but it did have it's limitations mainly with only one shared inventory thankfully with this new edition that has been sorted out; with each character now having their own inventory , giving the player more space to share items or to store items if playing solo. Now being able to swap between the characters especially for upgrading, repairs and changing weapons and armour makes the game more fluid., plus having the characters this way also means they all have their own coin to buy the potions they require while in battle, and they will use them on their own. For those new to this game there are certain things you need to know; each character has their own set of skills broken into three skill trees, so to get the most out of these skills you need to play the game 4 times on each difficulty and the enemy is always a difficulty higher than you. Easy difficulty will give you the most coin which will be essential for the higher difficulties as everything will cost more as you move to the next difficulty. The game carries everything over to the next difficulty including skills, so if you ignore easy difficulty you are ignoring between 18 - 20 skills that you won't have when you reach legendary difficulty. So play all difficulties, also heroic and legendary difficulties are locked till you get through normal difficulty. The story is a wonderful story that is believable within the Lord of The Rings lore and is an enjoyable one. Do all side quests to get the most out of the game which will also give you rare gifts even from a dragon. I highly recommend this game as it is in my opinion a rare classic .
Literally not a single better way to spend 18 dollars. I cannot believe they shadow dropped this. This game is special, and it would be a disservice not to play it. Find two friends and play it. If they don't want to buy it, buy it for them. If you can't do that, hit me up, and maybe I'm feeling generous. I CANNOT believe they shadow dropped this. If you're ever feeling lost and need a reason to make it to tomorrow, let it be this: At any moment an unplayable gem from your childhood could be remastered and flawlessly ported to Steam for 18 dollars.
Splitscreen restored = Instabuy Really fun co-op ARPG by genre specialist Snowblind, devs of BG:Dark Alliance and Champions of Norrath games. Local co-op / splitscreen was cut from the original release on PC. The fact they restored it justifies the remaster in itself. Very few local co-op RPGs on PC. Would insta-buy the Norrath games as well. Just sayin'
