My favorite game genre is RPGs, especially those with long and complicated stories, and that's what I usually play. But sometimes you just want to play something different that's fun but doesn't require any puzzle-solving skills or tactical combat, and this one scratched that itch for me. You're the original Abraham Van Helsing's son and you go back to your father's old vampire-hunting grounds after a letter informs you things aren't going well and as soon as you get there you start killing monsters. A lot of them. Tons. With guns and swords and magic. There's some light RPG elements tied to character progression and the existence of main quests and side-quests, but for the most part you just need to kill everything and move on to the next map. The story is kind of similar to that cheesy movie where Hugh Jackman played some version of Van Helsing who was named Grabriel instead of Abraham, but here as your companion you have the actual ghost of some Eastern European aristocrat lady called Katarina who during battle turns into what looks like a ghost if it was designed by H.R. Giger. In sum, a fun game that served as a palate cleanser betwen much longer and more complex games. IMO, the gameplay is a bit too repetitive for the game's length and it starts to feel like it drags on in the third act, but I still enjoyed the game as a whole because it's fun and it gave me Castlevania and Witcher vibes at times, but it's aslo not afraid to not take itself too seriously and throw in some references to other stuff as jokes, like Lord of the Rings, The HItchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and so on. Hell, the final boss mad scientist guy basically just repeats movie quotes and Katarina complains about the clichés he spouts.
From Isometric Camera: A very atmospheric, dark-fantasy/steampunk action RPG. A Van Helsing game. As a result of my love and appreciation for the genre, the game offers us quite a bit of multitasking: fight, get injured, cast spells, deal critical damage, loot, talk to Katarina, enchant your gear, help people through side quests, disrupt your enemies’ preparations, and marvel at the captivating visuals of a mechanized world, complete with incredible voice acting and an OST. Our main goal in the game is to follow in our father’s footsteps by hunting monsters and helping people, while fighting against the creatures, beings, and (spoiler) professors that are harming the city. If you like this genre, give it a try while it’s on sale—it’s worth it. If you take on side quests, grind, and play through the game from start to finish, it’ll take about 20 hours. I completed everything in 18 hours. I went for a few achievements, and that wrapped up the game for me. I built a hunter-class character focused on rifles, and I can say it was incredibly worth it. I enjoyed playing this game so much that I played until 4 a.m. and now I’m moving on to the sequel. Story: 7.5/10 Graphics: 9.5/10 Music: 9.5/10 Voice Acting: 9/10 Gameplay: 10/10 Enemy Variety: 7/10
An excellent action role-playing game with a Victorian noir atmosphere and steampunk elements. Collect everything you find, level up, and create various combinations of talents and equipment, either alone or in co-op with a friend. Recommended for those who enjoy a combination of gothic, adventurous, and lighthearted gameplay.
I started playing this game in 2026 - I had never heard of it, but I bought it and played it for an hour, which felt like a minute! Even though this game is 13 years old, it is the best game in my Steam library of 300+ games - I immediately bought all of the DLC and II and III versions - which I am yet to play.
