criminally underrated imo, though probably not the game for you if you want complex, difficult combat that requires practice and a great deal of effort - it's fairly casual in that regard (auto-aim; you just have to pull back the arrow long enough to make the shot and be careful not to fall off any cliffs when pulling back and moving at the same time). i do think it more than makes up for the more simplistic combat with the sheer fluidity and fun of the movement and flight mechanics. the boss fights in particular deserve a special mention for me; the difficulty for them often lays in getting the timing right whilst dodging attacks, and the bosses themselves are intimidating and fast. the map is beautiful as well, the lore is interesting, and the puzzles require some thought and are very rewarding to do (if you enjoy puzzles). overall a fantastic experience, much like the other games giant squid has put out.

I understand some of the negative reviews but I also think that if you've never played Journey or any game of Giant Squid then you may not vibe with their games. Their games require a bit of patients and imagination. The Pathless gets an 8 out of 10 for me. The open world and discovery is only hindered by a lack of depth in terms of things to interact with, repetitive objectives and sometimes boring puzzles. However the game also shines in those same aspects which I appreciated. Dialogue is limited and much of the story is pieced together through finding spirits of the deceased and pretty much using your imagination to fill in the past and present blanks of the story. I played a game called "Jusant" a couple of years ago where storytelling is done the same way. You don't interact with any people but storytelling is done through finding notes or spirits in the case of The Pathless. Overall, The Pathless is imaginative, calming, and at times breathtaking. Boss battles were pretty awesome too. Worth playing on a sale. They put in a lot of passion into the game so $40 for a 20 hours is reasonable if that is your thing. I won't say you may not get bored with the puzzles and the rinse and repeat objectives of each part of the world but you do get some great story telling and intense moments when trying to avoid danger. Worth a play, for sure if you have the patience and are fans of Journey, Abzu, Sword of the Sea.

I know I am 4 years late to this party but with the release of Giant Squid's newest game "Sword of the Sea" I realized I really should write something about this game. Firstly I am a casual gamer who has never found value in things like achievements or pursuing higher difficulties so this was already a fantastic game, that being said it was such a fun game with realistic achievements that its the first game I have ever 100%ed (Im sure some might say that means the game was easy but tbh if you have fun and enjoy playing it that was a GAME if for). The game is Gorgeous with an immersive soundscape and music that for me really pulled me in and kept me going. I love collecting fragments of a story in games and I felt that the story being told and the world being presented was fun and engaging!! The games mechanics can be a bit finicky at first but I found once I got the hang of them they were really fun and you could get into a smooth flow that made moving around the beautiful environments just a total blast. The games puzzles were well designed introducing you to tools and mechanics that would and could be used again and again in different ways that I felt were creative and interesting. I'm a guy who really likes movement and puzzles in my games (not a hot take: Portal 2 is the best game of all time). Id like to draw a comparison to another game that came out about a year after this one "Solar Ash" its another game set in a beautiful world with fast and satisfying (once you get the hang of it) movement abilities and fun puzzles, if you liked that game this game honestly might be better IMO. I particularly like how the entire world is completely traversal w/o loading screens, that paired with the movement makes it really feel like you can explore everything you have access to at your own pace and in your own order with only certain things being barred off by your lack of ability to reach them, but for instance if you need to finish a few more puzzles to get the next Eagle upgrade then you could go all the way back to zone one and fine secret puzzles you missed or that you couldn't solve before and it feels like you are just building more mastery of the skill set you have been given rather then it being a ton of puzzles that are obviously "of this is meant for you to come back for this one later". I found myself completing some puzzles that I think were intended for later exploration right away and I struggled with some puzzles that I'm sure were meant to be simple and that didn't take away from the experience. I know what I'm saying is nothing new to the gaming world but this was just a game that I felt really good playing and it really stuck a cord with me. I put 14 and a half hours into the game, 100%ed it and Loved ever minute I played it. 100% worth the price in my book and seeing "Sword of the Sea" was one of there games I realized they were the people behind Abzu and Journey which are 2 games I have heard a ton of good about but never played. I am currently 2 hours in to SotS and yeah (that's another review for another day but)... I think I am just a big fan of what Giant Squid are out here doing with their games.

I got this game when it was at a nice 75% off, expecting to have a decent time. It absolutely floored me. Not everyone is going to like this game as much as I do, but it feels like it was exactly catered to my tastes and interests. There’s no leveling systems and menu-ing. Just curiosity driven exploration, beautiful scenery, fantastic music, epic boss fights. The upgrades you do get feel like game-changers every time. I only lament that this game isn’t longer, but I feel like it’s the length it needs to be, for pacing reasons. A surprising masterpiece that rocketed its way into my Top 20 favorite games of all time, sitting at #16. 10/10 Sidenote: I went and checked out Giant Squid’s other game, ABZU, and while that one isn’t quite as good as The Pathless, I still loved it. It is safe to say Giant Squid is one of my favorite developers now, and I am greatly anticipating their upcoming game, Sword of the Sea. I may even buy it at full price!

Very Unique and beautiful game with a fun "flow" like speedy traversal system that quickly loses its novelty because of how lacking in substance it all is. This game is essentially just a big empty open world with collectables and puzzles sprinkled in for you to do. You just complete 4-8 puzzles, you kill the boss, and move on to the next section of the map. Repeat this 5 times and thats the entire 12 hours of this game. It gets very repetitive and thus loses its novelty very quickly. The music is phenomenal, the art direction is gorgeous, the traversal system that mixes shooting with speed is very fun and the bosses are memorable. but none of this is enough to carry the game if you're just doing the same repetitive puzzles over and over for 12-16 hours. There's no fun combat to spice up the exploration, no gameplay hook that really gets you motivated to play more, no exploration rewards or side stories or different map activities that make you want to explore your surroundings. This is what I mean by lacking in substance. There is nothing to break the monotonous tedium that is this game’s gameplay loop. You are just doing a bunch of puzzles with very similar mechanics for 16 hours straight. The only somewhat redeemable activity to help break this repetition is the unique boss fights, but they are severely uncommon (only 5) and while each are unique and impressive, they ultimately are not enough to keep this game interesting. I do think this game has its audience. If you like puzzles and/or admiring worlds with gorgeous art direction, you will like this game. but if you're looking for anything deeper then that, or just a game more interesting than do the same puzzles for 12 hours, this game has nothing to offer for you. It certainly did not have much to offer for me. I do think there’s enough here to make it good/recommendable, mainly the great music and beautiful art direction. But I still believe it’s all let down by a severe lack in gameplay variety to keep the game interesting. And because of that, I do recommend The Pathless, just only on deep sale. 7/10
