Saya no Uta is a disgusting, vile masterpiece of horror I feel conflicted on not only recommending but consuming. Before I start, although I technically do recommend the game (if allowed I would have abstained from recommending it), it's definitely not for everyone. Sure there's the gore, but the game also touches on topics like rape and pedophilia, whose visual depictions are censored in this steam version, but the text is still there in full graphic detail. Also for the purposes of this review I will be talking about the uncensored director's cut as it's easily accessible with a patch and was the intended experience. It's also the version I played as going in relatively blind (only knowing the basic premise) I wanted to play it as the developer's intended and had a morbid curiosity to look behind the curtain Steam had set up. Now knowing what's behind the curtain, I'm unsure if I would make that same decision again. The game's overall story is amazing and love how it deals with horror. From the start the game gets you instantly hooked into it's narrative as we see first hand how our MC sees the world, vile and disgusting. You instantly want to know more and the game slow feeds you information while also ensuring you have new questions. The game's horror is amazing as we see our MC's slow descent into madness until he crosses a certain line and willingly goes down it at mach speed. I knew the game dealt with psychological horror and body horror based on it's premise of a man seeing the whole world as covered with gore, but I didn't expect it to touch on themes of existential terror. It's by far the game's strongest theme, as we see how even those physically unaffected by Saya are still irrevocably changed by the mere knowledge of her existence. A nitpick I have on the story I feel to need to discuss is how sometimes characters make decisions that don't make sense at face value. I know it's a common trope in horror and the game usually does a decent enough job at justifying these decisions as we are given their thoughts making these decisions, but I can't help but feel the developer's invisible hand, like they're ensuring the worst outcome will occur so that we the players will be forced to see something horrific and heinous. Although a horror game, the emotion Saya no Uta evoked strongest in me was disgust, which is best portrayed in it's most problematic element, it's sexual content. From my memory there's only one explicit scene that plays into the horror of the situation and it is by far the most vividly abhorrent moment in the game, so much so I had to physically cover the screen instead of just not focusing on it. All the other explicit scenes, however, are played to titillate the audience. There's even a scene that juxtaposes the previously mentioned one, as it's a similar situation but now it's from the abuser's POV. Although this scene is written erotically, I found it to be just as disgusting as the previous one, just in a different way. Instead of being an immediate in-your-face disgust, it's a slow-building disgust, one aimed at the visual novel itself, as well as yourself for consuming it. This meta-horror disgust is true for all the rest of the explicit scenes, as they all involve Saya, a child-like character. This I find to be the most problematic and disgusting part of the game, as although technically an eldritch being, Saya is depicted as a child, with her looks and behavior. This isn't just me projecting on the game, as it's shown explicitly in how the MC describes and sees her, even during the explicit content, as if the game doesn't want you to ignore that fact even then. I can understand arguments for it and try to justify it as being used to show the degree of degeneracy the MC has succumbed to and to further the disgust and discomfort I feel playing the game. However, these arguments aren't enough for me as the game does not do enough to condemn these actions and how it's portrayed is inexcusable. It's also possible that I and others are just coping, as maybe these scenes aren't supposed to be disgusting in a meta way, maybe they were intended to just simply be erotic, which is a thought I find horrifying. Ultimately, although I am conflicted on Saya no Uta due to it's problematic elements, one in particular that I wished were removed entirely, I do ultimately find it to be a masterpiece of horror, meta-horror especially, intentional or not. To finish off this review, I wanted to recommend the YouTube video "Saya no Uta is disgusting." by 1000dumplings. Although not one-to-one to my feelings on this game, it goes further into detail on the game than my review and the chapter labelled "Breakdown" heavily resonated with how I felt finishing this game.

I think the e girls with the emotional maturity of a 13 year old stuck on the idea that true love means giving up everything in the world for their mid a** very much misunderstood the story as a romance. Not a cute story, just a girl taking advantage of a mentally ill man. That said, thoroughly grossed out. Well done horror, with unsettling visuals and audio. Can't wait to rinse my eyes with bleach. Edit: If you have Ame or Saya in your profile picture, I am afraid of you.

this game ruined my life! i'm 39 years old, unemployed and spend most of my time playing video games, especially visual novels. one day i assumed my mother was not home and i was playing this game with my room unlocked. there was a particular scene where saya and fuminori did some nasty nsfw things to the girl that has a crush on fuminori. i was really enjoying it and really focused on the game, but i didnt notice my mother was taking the laundry in my room and cleaning my room because i was playing with headphones in! my mother was very shocked and told me i need to get mental help (and she refuses to pay for it!) or leave the house. getting a job is to pay for mental help is no option for me, so now she gave me a 2 week notice to leave the house!
