This game is a good example of why I think Steam should go back to a star rating system as opposed to this binary "Recommended vs. Not Recommended" system. The remake is a beautiful rendition of the original game, and I thoroughly enjoyed playing through the main story and Road to Gehenna...but not so much with "In the Beginning." I had played Talos and Road to Gehenna all the way through two or three times before this remake came out. If you would have asked me on my first playthrough whether the puzzles or the story stood out more, I would have said the puzzles, not caring for the story much at all. But I did learn to value the story more on subsequent playthroughs. Playing through this remake, the story hit me more than ever. It was a very enjoyable experience. Regarding "In The Beginning," the arrangement above is completely flipped. The story is about the only thing worth experiencing. With a few (as in two or three) exceptions, the puzzles are ploddingly and laboriously dull, especially when you find out with so many of them that the answer is some cute, clever trick you have to discover almost by accident (or consulting a walkthrough video). Yes, part of my bitterness is probably a difficulty thing. But a huge part of it is how they contrast with puzzles in the main game. There is an elegance to the previous puzzles that is severely lacking with most of the puzzles in the latest addition. I get the feeling the developers based their decisions on which community-created puzzles to include too heavily on how clever or brilliant the overall concept of a given puzzle seemed as opposed to how enjoyable it is to actually play it through. If that's the case, I think it was a considerable error in judgment.

The original The Talos Principle rebuild in Unreal Engine v5 Because of the Unreal Engine, the hardware requirements of this version are higher, on older hardware with several tweaks in the game's settings (by turning quality down) this game runs OK The game's content is the base game, The Road to Gehenna, and a new chapter In the Beginning the recorder mechanic has a new pause function (press E while not at the recorder terminal). This game has also an editor so you can create your own adventures and puzzles! The original The Talos Principle is one of my most favorite games, and this version is a big step up from the original.

The original The Talos Principle is one of my all-time favorite games, not merely as a puzzle experience but as a philosophical one. Its puzzles are inseparable from the questions it asks: about consciousness, free will, obedience, identity, and what it means to be human. The game invites genuine self-reflection in a way few titles even attempt, and that intellectual weight places it alongside the greatest puzzle games ever made. The remaster, however, feels surprisingly less polished. Whether due to limitations of the engine or the way the upgrade was implemented, it struggles even on high-end PC builds—an unfortunate distraction in a game that relies so heavily on immersion and contemplation. Still, the core experience remains extraordinary. If you’re drawn to games that challenge your thinking as much as your problem-solving, this is absolutely worth revisiting. The remaster includes the original expansion, which deepens the game’s philosophical themes rather than merely extending its runtime—a significant addition. It also introduces new puzzle segments; while I found some of these more frustrating than enlightening, they do not diminish the overall impact. This is not a game for casual play or quick gratification. It rewards patience, curiosity, and a willingness to sit with uncomfortable questions. For those inclined toward philosophical exploration—and especially for anyone preparing to play the sequel—The Talos Principle Remastered remains a powerful, thought-provoking experience.

One of the best puzzle games ever made. As all remasters, I will split this review in two parts. The original Talos Principle is a classic. It involves a simulated virtual world where you as a robot have to solve puzzles with a few components. There's basically no instructions nor tutorials, you learn the rules by experimenting. The game starts easy but will get very challenging towards the end, specially the optional puzzles, in the form of stars, that requires a lot of lateral thinking to get them. Contrary to other games like The Witness, The Talos Principle has a clear plot that will unravel during the progress of the game. The key characters consist of Elohim, being the voice of God, and Milton, being the library assistant who questions existence itself. There's a lot of philosophical reading that, even if it can be skipped, it's part of the world building. There's also audio logs and a QR system where other robots communicate between each other, a way to share your thoughts and sometimes give small hints. The game presents three worlds, each with 7 basic levels (and a couple of hidden or extra ones) to solve between 3 and 5 puzzles each. This is not a short game, puzzles will rarely click immediately and exploration is encouraged for secrets and easter eggs. In the sound department, all voices and OST are just superb. Music accompanies the relaxing visuals in a perfect way, every sound is also there to complete the world. Regarding the DLC, Road to Gehenna, you play as one of the characters you might have found in the original game: Uriel. It's also brings a very fun plot in which they recreated something like a 90s internet forum inhabited by a group of robots that you have to release one by one. There's no new puzzle components, nor music, nor visuals. It's basically a new set of new levels, much harder than the original game and only recommended for people who wanted more. Regarding the Reawakened remaster, it's debatable if it was really needed. The original game was just superb. The biggest changes includes the engine, now powered by Unreal Engine 5, a very fun developer commentary track that is presented in the form of node recordings, and a new campaign called In the beginning. Also of worth, they simplified one of the most frustrating parts of the original game, the use of hints. Previously you could only get one hint for one specific puzzle, and most of the times being useless because of the complexity of the game world. The new enhancements use the hint system from Talos 2. The recording mechanic, one of the most complex mechanics, was also added a needed pause function, which makes the puzzles actually fun. Lastly, In the beginning, the new mini campaign consists of 3 worlds with about 5 puzzles each and 1 star in each. It's not long, but the puzzles are just the hardest and most complex in the entire Talos world. They expect to exploit every puzzle mechanic ever. The plot is probably the best thing, it acts as a prequel and basically shows you how the simulation looked like in the first iterations. Music and visuals are the same as always, except for a level which includes a working subway as flavor. I don't know why they included that in one specific level instead of throwing new content and mechanics in other levels, since it looks great. This is still one of the best puzzle games ever made. If you played the original, this remaster is still super recommended. Returning to The Talos Principle world was never as good as this. EDIT: Community content makes this game even better. A must.

I've just completed the new module "In the beginning" in TP: Reawakened. First, let me say how beautiful the graphics are in the entire remake. In the Beginning, you are contemporary with Alexandra and the team, as they create the programs (you are the Beta test, basically). The story is very thought-provoking, and as someone with Stage-4 metastatic cancer, and dealing with my own mortality - this game touched me to my very heart. It is absolutely my favorite! It felt like I'm was being watched-over by Alexandra, herself. On a technical level - beware. Some of the puzzles in ITB are mind-bending / complex. But they are all extremely satisfying when you solve them. I give the highest recommendation to Talos Principle: Reawakened ! Even if you have the originals, you have to see and play this remake/improved/enhanced version.
