It's crazy, I remember when this one came out, never thought I'd be playing it again. Remember the ads on magazines and how they talked about it's very interesting and ambitious "trust system" and such. It was also the game that lead me straight to the movie, or at the very least to know of its existence. Ended up buying the DVD like a year later I think; I could never finish the game tho cause of a bug that made it crash after the final boss fight, so well, I finished it like 20 years later I guess. Now, my first impression all that time ago, which really hasn't changed tho, was that it wasn't really that much of anything, underwhelming even. The gameplay is run of the mill survival horror from it's time but the actual interesting thing about it was it's mechanics. You would have to earn the trust of the NPCs to get them to follow orders, and you would have to test them to see if they are infected, awesome right? Now, maybe you weren't there back at the time, but to me it just didn't deliver on its promises. mean, it sounded way better from what it ended up being. Sure, it was a damn interesting idea, but that's as far as it went. Sometimes the AI doesn't respond the way it's meant to respond and there was, and I'm saying "was" because it is supposedly fixed but i haven't noticed it, a bug that caused the blood test to be useless; basically you would test some dude, the test would show negative and then he would turn nonetheless, which you know kinda ruins it... Now the other thing about The Thing is it's story. This is supposed to be the only canon continuation from the original movie, as per said by non other than Carpenter himself, and I can accept that now, after all this time. The Thing happens to be one of my favourites, if not MY favourite movie of all time, so getting to accept this story as a proper sequel it's a little bit hard for me, because it ain't really that much of anything. The plot is basic, both for a sequel as well for a movie based videogame, which was kind of the style at the time, so I didn't think much of it back then nor do I think much of it now, but I do appreciate the nods, even if it ruins the ambigous ending from the film. The game is also pretty short (as it usually was for this type of games) clocking at about 6 hours if you power through it, and fairly easy. I mean very easy, making it a nice start point to get into survival horror, just like I did all those years ago. Lets just say you won't EVER run out of ammo, the game is very generous with it's items. Other than that this is an amazing remaster. Textures look substantialy better, lightning looks gorgeous and the sheer fact that we can play this forgotten game back again is a wonder and opens so many doors on what can be remastered from the PS2 era again, now let's keep in mind that Nightdive is owned by Atari, who also published this one originally, so I don't know how much of this remaster was their own initiave but it's nice to think that others will come eventually. The Thing is not the best movie based game ever, but it might scratch some itch. It was nothing special back then, still ain't nothing special nowadays. 3/5

Exactly how I remember this hidden gem just with a nice updated coat of paint and some quality of life improvements. Proof you don't need stupid performance crippling Ray Tracing to have a gorgeous game. Absolutely loving my return to Antarctica.
