July 2025
Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 205: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆ (9/10) Thief is one of those games I hesitated to play for years because of all the mixed reviews, but now that I’ve finally given it a fair shot… I’m kind of obsessed. No, it’s not perfect. Yes, it deviates from the classic Thief games in meaningful ways. But when it’s working—which, for me, was most of the time—it’s a rich, tense, incredibly atmospheric stealth experience that knows exactly how to reward curiosity, patience, and planning. This is a stealth game where your eyes are constantly darting between shadows and guard patrols, where you mentally map every route, where the simple act of cracking a safe in a dark room feels like the most thrilling thing in the world. It’s moody, immersive, and often beautiful, even a decade later. 🕵️‍♂️ Pros: [*] An incredibly immersive stealth sim when it hits its stride. Thief doesn't play like a modern AAA action game. It slows you down, demands attention, and rewards you for staying hidden. You’re not supposed to kill everyone or rush in—you’re supposed to vanish. And when you're moving silently across rafters, extinguishing torches, and picking locks with only the sound of your heartbeat, it feels incredible. The tension is real. The payoffs are earned. [*] Satisfying level design with strong verticality and multiple routes. While some levels feel more constrained than others, many of the best missions offer a rich variety of paths, secret entrances, vents, balconies, and environmental tricks to manipulate. You feel clever for discovering an alternate route through a window, or for finding a hidden crawlspace that bypasses an entire patrol. Every level begs to be replayed just to see what you missed. [*] The atmosphere is immaculate. This version of The City is grimy, gothic, and drenched in sickly candlelight and fog. You can almost smell the soot and mildew. Everything from crumbling tenements to opulent manors feels handcrafted with incredible texture and lighting work. Even just walking the streets, eavesdropping on conversations, or slipping through windows builds a vibe you want to sink into. [*] Fantastic stealth toolkit. Water arrows, choke arrows, rope arrows, noise makers, lockpicks—it’s classic thief fantasy brought to life. There’s a simple joy in planning your infiltration with just the right tools, and the UI (especially with HUD elements turned off or reduced) supports a clean, immersive experience. [*] Looting is tactile and deeply satisfying. The little animations—Garrett picking up a coin, turning a ring, cracking a safe—make the act of stealing feel intimate. You’re not just hoovering up loot like in Skyrim; you’re handling each item like a real thief would. It’s detailed, personal, and it makes finding every trinket feel valuable. [*] Strong sound design and environmental storytelling. Listen carefully and you’ll hear guards humming, civilians gossiping, or wind blowing through broken shutters. Read a scattered note, examine a suspicious setup in a room, and piece together the lives of people long gone. Even corpses feel like they have backstories. [*] Underrated replay value. With side jobs, challenge modes, and plenty of loot and secrets you’ll almost certainly miss on your first run, Thief invites you to return with a sharper eye. Trying to ghost missions, go full kleptomaniac, or find all hidden paths gives the game legs far beyond its main campaign. 🤐 Cons: [*] Garrett’s rebooted personality is kind of a letdown. He’s serviceable but lacking the wit and world-weariness of the original games. He delivers dry one-liners and seems oddly detached from the plot—like he’s annoyed to be there. The story wants him to be a brooding anti-hero, but he ends up feeling flat compared to his legacy. [*] Main story is mediocre and sometimes incoherent. The supernatural plot never really comes together. Erin’s arc is confusing, and the “Primal” stuff feels like filler between heist missions. Thankfully, you can almost ignore the main story and just enjoy the missions and world design on their own. [*] Rope arrow system is strangely limited. One of the most frustrating design choices: you can only use rope arrows in pre-designated spots, even when there are tons of other wooden beams or surfaces. It feels like an artificial limitation in a game that otherwise encourages creativity. [*] Middling combat that feels more like a punishment than a tool. If you get caught, your options are… run, blackjack, or pray. There’s no real combat depth or skill expression—just sluggish parrying and a clunky swing. It reinforces stealth, but makes mistakes feel more like annoyances than tense scrambles. [*] Some players may bounce off the slower pacing. If you're looking for flashy, fast-paced action or constant story beats, Thief may feel too slow or methodical. It’s a game about watching, waiting, creeping, and sometimes… just listening. For the wrong player, that can feel like a chore.

It's like a stealth game that’s afraid of commitment. Sneak, steal, suffer through plot, There’s a good game buried under the gloom and eyeliner. I just couldn’t pick the lock to find it. Just okay overall.

I don't understand. I'm a big fan of immersive sims / stealth games. I almost passed this game because of majority of people calling this game "mid" - and I am so incredibly glad I haven't. This game might have been mid back in the golden era of gaming (which doesn't mean it's mid, it's just not masterpiece), but in 2025? It's one of the best games I have played in a long long time, extremely underrated in my opinion. Also- asylum chapter was hella scary. Whoever level designer was- get that man to horror genre industry

It's an okay taffer game. The story was okay, but it was way too short, and it could have been told better. Gameplay is good, but holy mackerel, animations for opening the windows or crossing the gaps were really annoying. If the game is on sale, you can try and steal it buy it.
