There are some issues with this but I've been enjoying it so far. Pros - The controls are pretty smooth. - The voice acting and animations are top notch. - It's good old classic Thief gameplay, sneaking around, blackjacking guards, lining your pockets with loot, etc. - There's some replay value in collecting all the loot, completing all the optional objectives and earning all the play style badges. Cons - Aiming the bow is annoying. The reticle only lines up in a straight line from your headset so you're basically holding your bow hand straight out in front of your face and your arrow hand is like right between your eyes. It's really awkward. I have no idea how this got through testing. - Not enough use of arrows so far. In the older Thief games, your bow was basically your Swiss army knife. Water arrows to douse torches and make it dark, moss arrows to make the ground quiet, rope arrows could be attached to anything wooden, etc. Almost all the lights in this game are static lanterns with only a couple fires and candles here and there that are so infrequent as to not really matter, there are no moss arrows, rope arrows are limited to certain locations, etc. It's nice to have the bow and arrows but sad that they comprise 3 out of the 4 cons on this list. - The graphics are clearly Quest-compatible. I don't usually care that much about Quest ports not having great graphics but this game, in particular, would benefit greatly from some upgraded textures, at least. Bugs - There seems to be a bug with the game not knowing which "zone" you're supposed to be in. As you move around a level, objects load in and out based on what zone you're in but sometimes this gets mixed up and a plethora of bugs can occur as a result. Sometimes items are invisible, sometimes they're visible but non-interactive, sometimes doors disappear or move around the map, sometimes black zone borders appear where they aren't supposed to, etc. This one is pretty bad and will lead to the most frustration. You can sometimes fix it by running around the map, changing zones a bunch of times and coming back to find the items are loaded in and interactive but if it's your first playthrough, you aren't going to know where items are supposed to be so you won't know if some have turned invisible. - Sometimes you can't load a mid-mission checkpoint after quitting the game, forcing you to restart a mission from the beginning. This was made much better as of patch 2.0 but still occurs sometimes. There's no good reason for saving and loading to not work. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say it's caused by some other bug, like the previously mentioned zone bug. The autosave is probably writing bad data due to a bug and then can't load it. This seems especially likely since saving/loading between missions is never a problem, you will never lose your entire save. It's only when trying to load a mid-mission checkpoint that's a problem. There are some other minor issues but those are the two big ones. Overall, the game is a lot of fun to play, in spite of some issues and frustrations. For $30 or less, this is still well worth it if you have some patience.

This is going to be a recommend, but a very soft and slight one. I've enjoyed my time with this, but only just. Positives first: -Stephen Russell back as Garrett -Blackjack feels pretty good to use -Physicality is well implemented, it feels good to move through this world and interactions feel natural -Stealth broadly feels pretty good -There is an immersive microphone option I enjoyed quite a bit. I have a personal habit of talking to myself while I play games and I had to actively tamp down on that while playing to not alert guards, it added a surprising amount to the tension of the game -The story focuses on events from the original trilogy and connects pretty nicely to them in a way that Thief 2014 refused to do outside of two very brief visual references. -Level design is... not bad. -Magpie is an interesting character. And cons: -AI is just atrocious. Sincerely some of the worst stealth game AI I have ever seen in my life. I am a preschool teacher and the toddlers I work with would do a better job guarding things during nap time than these morons do fully awake. -The writing kind of sucks. One line that stands out to me is Garrett saying "I wish I could translate. Unfortunately I'm only fluent in sarcasm." which... Good god that is not something Looking Glass Garrett would ever say and is just a lame line to boot. -Stealth is incredibly simplistic, even when compared to Thief 2014. The light gem has been streamlined down to a simple "visible or not" system with no in between state. This coupled with the quite possibly literally lobotomized AI makes for a rather unchallenging experience. -At some point The City experienced a temporal shift of some kind that turned everyone Northern English, especially the guards. This has the interesting effect of making The City feel *more* generic than having American accents all over the place. -Aiming the bow is remarkably difficult because to achieve a full draw your draw hand needs to somehow occupy the same position in space as your headset and unfortunately I have not been able to figure out how to make that happen. -The game does not appear to have a pause button. The only way I could discover to pause the game is to open the Steam VR menu, which automatically pauses. The game frequently tells you to pause to check your objectives, but I'm not entirely sure how I'm actually intended to do that. -Levels aren't... great. They're broadly incredibly linear, which isn't the end of the world but can feel very restrictive and limiting. There are often one or two obvious ways into a space placed right next to each other. -There's no ability to buy things with the money you steal. In every other game before this you go into a level, steal a bunch of shit, then with (some of) the money you took you then got to be a little better prepared for the next mission by buying supplies. Arrows, potions, intel, etc. The only reward for thieving in this Thief game is... Getting an RPG-esque upgrade such as more health, the ability to drag guards faster, and starting the level with 3 water arrows. That's right, the ability to have any amount of supplies at the start of a mission (aside from 3 lethal arrows, so far as I can tell) is tied to a random upgrade you only get for stealing a specific amount of gold from the level. -Quick addendum after the fact: there is no confirmation dialogue window if you click "restart mission", it just dumps you straight back at the start. I learned this in one mission where I accidentally walked off a plank into instant death water 5 feet from the level exit and subsequently accidentally clicked "restart mission." I put the game down after that and went to bed. It had been a decent amount of time and I had been very meticulous and that was just miserable to come to terms with in the moment. Overall, I knew that any adaptation of Thief into VR was going to come with compromises, there just isn't a way to make a game that is exactly 1:1 with the original Trilogy. I was expecting something closer to Thief 2014 which I by and large do not dislike too terribly and I am a little disappointed that things have been streamlined even further than that. Taking a step back and trying to look at the game a little less from the perspective of a fangirl however, the game is fine. $30 for a pretty decent experience that feels really good to play and does achieve the stated goal of being something akin to a Thief game but in VR... It's hard to say don't consider buying this. I would hope the AI can be improved with patches but I'm not going to hold my breath and I wouldn't tell people to anticipate that to happen. Be wary, consider carefully whether to purchase, but this isn't a terrible game and at least that's something, I suppose.

Turn on Immersion mode, turn off the additional UI as well as the lockipicking UI and strap in for the greatest return of Thief a fan of both the original trilogy and VR could ask for. Thief: Deadly Shadows was one of the first PC games I ever played as a kid and is one of the major works that started a lifelong fascination with immersion and stealth gameplay in videogames. It feels almost poetic to be once again playing Thief on what to me STILL feels like brand new technology... Stephen Russell thankfully once again returns to voice act Garret. The story from an early point gave me heavy Cyberpunk 2077 but in the steampunk world of Thief vibes... And, I'm totally fine with that! It fits well and is a great way to have Garret be with you for your thieving journey. Story aside it is a faithful Thief game but with the twist of being in VR. The mechanics you want and remember mostly all return. Pickpocketing, lockpicking, light gems, the multiple arrow types and their various uses, bionic eyes, the blackjack smackdown, etc. Thief: VR could use with some graphics tweaking options (any at all?), textures seem to have a wide variance in quality and hopefully we can see some improvements down the line so PC users can uitilize their gaming rigs, AI also seems to be a little wonky with their pathfinding outright breaking at times when in combat.. But, this is a game about avoiding combat not getting into it so I was able to let that slide. TLDR: If you own a VR headset and like the original trilogy of Thief or just wanted to jump into the franchise with the newest game this is a premium product with replayablitly, a story and real levels. This is NOT another empty VR sandbox that asks the player to do all the work and is what I personally want to see from VR games going forward.

Feels like Thief, with plenty of references to the original games. More in line with Deadly Shadows than 1 or 2 but I'd happily take that over Thief 2014. A bit too much dialogue from the main character and the guards alike but I'm kind of nitpicking here. Hope this can make the series relevant again somewhat.

It's not the greatest game ever, but in a time where it feels like all we get is cash grab bullshit, this feels like a nice break. Combat and parrying could use a little tweaking, but hey at least they work.
