This game is a diamond in the rough - for a certain kind of gamer. If you think it sounds like fun to grind out gear and level ups for dozens of minions in the style of Battle Brothers, this game is for you. It actually takes a LOT from ol' Battle Brothers, and is almost a clone when it comes to loot and leveling. Unlike that game, the combat is a bit simplified. I've heard it called an auto-battler, but to me it's more of a simple RTS style of combat. It's not deep, but there are strategies to help you take the edge against your foe. Still, preparation and choosing your battlefields carefully - rather than tactics - will ultimately determine if you win or lose. Also unlike that game, your army will be led by heroes with significantly improved stats and traits. In addition, certain characters can learn "ultimate" skills with weapons, giving them a huge edge in combat if wielding that weapon. The game is a bit coarse, buggy at times and with translation issues (occasionally they have simply forgotten to translate a button or dialogue line). It also does NOT hold your hand. It's very possible you will get wiped out by a mission battle that you simply didn't know would be above your level. It is necessary to save often, and it takes some time to get the hang of when and where to fight or not. If this bothers you, then this game is not for you. I love the crunchy leveling system and I love micro-managing 30+ soldiers. I love a game that's challenging and doesn't hold my hand. I love the Three Kingdoms Era (though fair warning this game takes more liberties with the history than it gets accurate). If these things appeal to you, buy this game. You won't regret it.

DO NOT BUY YET!!! I love the game and it is unfortunate that I would have to recommend people pass on it for now. The price is fair for what the game is supposed to be but that is the crux of it. This game isn't just unfinished, it's got major issues in the core of it. The good: This game is stable, as I've always said "If you do not have stability you have nothing". Great art style but if you are a fan of EVERYTHING 3 kingdoms, things will look off. There are a lot of game mechanics involved though I think buying your own home needs lots of work. There is a nice custom officer capability though it clearly is NOT finished yet. The concept is RotTK8/10 meets battle brothers, mostly accomplished. The debate mini game is simple and well done. I like their debate system more than any other. Maybe I'm just getting so old that I have curved time and got in touch with my inner child who would love to pop colorful bubbles! The audio is good, nothing super special but good. The bad: The language translation is so poorly done that you will be unsure of what you are supposed to do. Not everything is even translated. The scripted battles are so terribly done that everything they seem to brief you on doesn't seem to be what you are scored on. You can actually accomplish EVERYTHING they wanted you to do and still end up with mid scores. Your rewards are based on both battle rating and personal merit so even if you get a SS battle rating you will usually not get top merit because they SCRIPT officers who do NOTHING in the fight with massssssive scores. It's very odd that your army is comprised of all officers. No meat shield basic soldiers which are easy to replace like in every army sim game? I think they are missing out on another mechanic opportunity by not using basic soldiers as a shield that prevents officers gear and health from being hit so long as they have soldiers to protect them. Yes, your officers gear gets wrecked in most battles even if you have 2 - 3 times the stats than your opponents so there will be massive repair bills. Scaling is odd, the weakest bandits can be rough until you get to the point where you can appoint a strategist then everything is easy as long as you have your strats off cooldown until you get to end game super bandit groups which take 2 strategists and still hurt. Some early game events will be OVERWHELMING and later ones can seem like they are a breeze. Loot, most drops are broken and sell for nothing. I get why it might not sell for full price but even at 0% and needing repair, it should still have some value! The developers are trying to tell a story but they haven't a clue on how to do that. Show me don't tell me in exposition dumps! Many of the sceens come off as childish exposition dumps to fast track you through a pre tweens version of the 3 kingdoms. Even through there are plenty of negatives about the game in it's current state, I like it and hope to see them fixing most of the issues.

I really want to love this game, so I'll give it a thumbs halfway . The game has many good aspects, in particular the Three Kingdoms Setting, the art and the music. The game has two modes, an open world quests and exploration map, really similar to Battle Brothers , and a real time auto battler. The general map and quests are good, in spite of some harsh translation here and there, but the auto battler fights are underwhelming. Battle Brothers had a great turn based strategic combat, really well integrated to the general game, the auto battler in Three Kingdoms Mushoden is rather boring, and I don't feel the upgrades in equipment and weapons are as well integrated to the general map and quests as BB, as they feel less impactful. So, it's not bad, in particular if you like the Three Kingdoms lore and know the name of the main characters (The starting character in the tutorial campaign is a bastard son to the treacherous and entitled Yuan Shu!) and the quests are interesting and engaging, even if you encounter the same side quests over and over, but the real time auto battler really is the short leg of a game that could have been great with a better tactical battle system. TLDR: Get it on sale if you really like Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The game runs ootb in Linux via Proton.

Mount & Blade + Battle Brothers + Three Kingdoms Story = A Masterpiece. Can’t wait to recruit legends like Lu Bu, Zhuge Liang, Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun, and even Diao Chan! I’ve been playing on Cannibalistic difficulty for about 20 hours now, and here's what I’ve noticed: Cons: 1. Quests and jobs start to feel a bit repetitive after a while. ( kill bandit, escort, find a person ) 2. Earning money is a little too easy. 3. English translation is a bit off in some places (for now). 4. Managing your squad gets tough once it grows larger. With only two columns in the character menu, you have to scroll a lot just to find the right person. Right now, I have 31 characters, and it’s hard to keep track of who’s using a dao, jian, axe, halberd, or who’s equipped with which armor or helmet. My advice for Team Info page : ============================================================================== General - sort | [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] | [ photo + equipment ( 50% width ) - Skill and attributes & status ( 50% width ) [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] | ================================================================== [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] | [ backpack and talent ] [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] | Personel button| ============================================================================== or add a button to hide/show the character photo in Team Info ( it can add like 4-5 persons columns ) Overall 8.5 / 10

It is a mixture of Battle Brothers and Mount & Blade. Its got active skills and fights take place in real time so damage in battle spikes both ways so it is not unusual for your soldiers to go down. When units fall in battle they roll on a random injury and it is possible for random units to have crippling injuries. I have not seen a permanent injury occur on a hero unit yet so I am unsure if it affects them. It is a little hard to form a solid base at the beginning using the default difficulty settings. That said there is different settings to make the game easier or harder at the start so tweak at your leisure. I do not believe there is an income system so I am curious how will the game handle mid game large armies. In the early battles I have not seen any ranged units so I am assuming they do not exist. So tactics are very simple with only cavalry and infantry tactics. Overall it was an entertaining early experience and I'm curious how the game will feel towards end game with many active skills flying around.
