I recommend it, but only if you play the legacy version. The new, more linear and history-focused version is definitely more informative and historically-accurate, but the actual experience of playing it as a video game is really haphazard stripped down. Before the current version, Warsaw was a video game with all kinds of interesting historical aspects to be explored. Now, it's a historical visual novel with a game tacked on as something of an afterthought. Since it's free, there's no reason not to get it, but if you want to actually enjoy the playing experience beyond just the historical aspect, you'll have to go through the settings and select the legacy edition.
It's a lot to unpack but in short, the changes look great so far. The addition of narrative campaign and expanding on "lore" was exactly what the base game was missing so seeing this get done, with so many languages available is wonderful. The new mode is much more accessible to general public and honestly a lot more fun than repetitive missions. The gameplay in missions and combat is still okay. I am actually taking a break from BG3 and focusing on this to see what else the game has in store. HOWEVER: The outrage in negative reviews is justified and should be treated as well deserved slap on the wrist as taking away any form of content from those of us who have paid for the game and thus supported the studio years ago is plain wrong. The game itself could be a little better if the "old" mode was, well... a mode to be selected in game instead of a "steambranch" that is vaguely accessible if you read the news. Also, communications around the change were clearly mishandled so while I am giving a positive review, there is an element that could clearly be better.
ok, i just here to spread the words that you can play the final update for the old version of this game thank to someone here in discussion, we can play the old version of this game just open up setting for this game then go for the beta section Afterward,just click the beta participation and choose bootcamp public test branch Don't worry, it may sound different but it literally the old version final update just before this new version come so to those who enjoy this game before the update come, you can now play it to your heart content
Randomly, I'm an American that's lived both in Warsaw and Germany. I've seen museums to this event in both countries. It definitely strikes a different tone. First impression, yup. I played through Darkest Dungeon twice, clearly it influenced this game -- but it's not Darkest Dungeon. The mechanics are well thought out and different in combat and base building and the city. The Polish and German speech is a neat touch. Super impressed so far. I bought it on sale and was waiting for controller support to get into it.
As a disclaimer I'm biased towards this game as a Polish American and a huge fan of Polish history, but even so this is an excellent game and one of my all time favorites. If you enjoy history, RPGs, Darkest Dungeon, and games that are legitimately meant to have challenging features then you will love this game. The game play can seem simple on your first play or two on normal difficulty if you choose your starting characters, but if you want a really fun challenge then increase the difficulty and randomize all your starter characters. An absolutely authentically fun and addictive game if you're a history nerd; and if you're not just know how important the Warsaw Uprising was and is to the character of the Polish people. I really support this game and the developers and I've bought it as a gift for most of my steam friends. I really look forward to seeing more updates and improvements from the developers for this already amazing game!
