Dec. 2025
This is... not really what I'd call a great game, actually, but I'd absolutely recommended it for the right kind of people. It's pretty good in many ways, though I found it surprisingly flawed considering it's been out for several months with an "overwhelmingly positive" score. I do think it's a bit telling that according to achievement statistics, less than 20% finished an in-game year - which is not enough to get through the main story (if you can even call it that). I've been playing it a lot in the same way that you might eat a lot of convenience food. I've found it mostly pleasant and it demands minimal effort. There are a lot of opportunities to just lean back and watch the scenery and the coming and going of customers. You don't have to be very mentally present, and physically it can be played with just a touchpad and zero reflexes. So it IS a great game to play with my chronic illness. I also found it nice to play together with a fellow overthinker. A lot of my play time was spent arguing over how many of which books to stock, how to minmax decorations, which books might be least in demand with other customers while still fulfilling the criteria of the current request, or which recommendation we could hilariously get away with when no obvious choice was available. Being familiar with the IRL books is an advantage, so playing with someone who could fill out some of my own gaps was neat. I even started two saves on my own, to try different things and take my sweet time to make everything look nice. Which is not difficult with that artwork and the decent amount of interesting decorations - even our shared save's shop looks like a very pretty garage sale. The game also nails the atmosphere of a small coastal community. I found the characters mostly nice and fun, and I had some good laughs at some of the quests and dialogue lines. Unlike many other reviewers, I like the limited number of different books. It made me feel pleasantly familiar with my little shop, and I could learn the quirks of that notorious recommendation system. What the villagers are going to do with the 5th copy of the same book? Well, when are they going to read all those books anyway if they come by on a daily basis to buy a huge stack? There are a lot of things in this game that it's best just not to think too hard about. The recommendations are a good place to start talking about my negatives... Not sure if some of the books still have wrong or insufficient tags or if some customers are just meant to be obnoxious and wrong, but either way the result is a bit too realistic for my taste. Not a huge deal, though I did get annoyed at times. As I said, at least with the current limited selection you can get used to what works and what doesn't. I think the main thing that's lacking for a great game in my opinion is a more immersive feel. Not every game needs that, and I'm very fine with small indie games that stay superficial and/or repetitive if they are otherwise charming. But then I'd honestly expect it to be a shorter experience. In this game there was a long stretch when we were both wondering if it wasn't going to end soon. The constant redecorating for different bonuses and browsing through an increasing number of books was getting tedious, and there wasn't even any indication of what we had to do to finish the main story - or if there even WAS a clear end of a main story rather than just collecting all the stamps and memories. The soundtrack honestly didn't feel suitable for more than 5 to maybe 10 hours either. The extremely repetitive tracks during decorating and book recommendations got grating and un-cosy real quick. The rest was pleasant enough for a while, but I ended up muting the music completely (something I usually don't do unless my fatigue level demands it). It's a partially nonlinear game with a lot of things to do in various places, but apparently the game expects you to do some things in a certain order. Which you notice when you get continuity errors, like a character at an event being upset about an issue that's already resolved. I also learned through my new save that you're supposed to get an item that we didn't get in the shared one, probably because we didn't visit a location that the game thought we'd visit during that time. In one case, I was even actively punished for not behaving the way the game wanted me to: [url=https://steamcommunity.com/app/2133760/discussions/0/691994366768790251/]mild spoilers for the first few in-game days . Then, I don't know if this is the same issue of dev expectations vs. player behaviour or more general pacing and balance issues: By the time we got around to a quest line that was sold as a meaningful challenge, it was completely trivial. By the time we unlocked most of the really cool stuff with good bonuses, we no longer needed it. By the time we unlocked a place that would have been awesome to use earlier, there was no reason to go there any more. On the other hand, we spent way too much time with just the starting bookshelf and a small extra box because new shelves are RNG-dependent. Oops, I wasn't going to write this much about a game that most things have already been said about. Anyway, TL;DR: My review is positive, but not overwhelmingly so. * * * If you like chill and story-driven games, check out my curator [url=https://store.steampowered.com/curator/35872486]Peaceful Adventures and Stories . As a former bookseller, this game is all the parts I loved about my job and almost none of the parts I hated. The only place it falls flat is the subjectivity of the accuracy of recommendations. I think Shakespeare's Richard III is a tear jerker! Sue me! I know this is such a nitpick, but I couldn't help but feel actual frustration at times when a book I knew would fit someone's request perfectly was turned down for seemingly arbitrary reasons.

I own a bookshop. This game authentically recreates many of the aspects of bookshop ownership such as: -struggling to fit everything on the shelves -getting bogged down in conversation with eccentric locals when you're in the middle of something else -recommending a book to a customer at their request and which meets their specifications, only to be told: "No that's not right." 10/10 no notes.

I mean this in the nicest way possible - I stopped playing the game because I felt guilty I wasn't reading a book.

As an avid reader and appreciator of all things book related, I was very excited for this game. There aren't many games available with bookworm vibes. While this game does deliver on a wholesome and cozy level, the gameplay loop becomes a bit dull after a while. The customization features are well done. You have complete control on what books you want to sell, your colour scheme and decorations. You unlock different locations on the map to set up your mobile shop daily. This is the part I found a bit “idly” and stale. You can explore the surrounding area a bit, and while it’s exciting the first visit, future visits become less so. I found myself just sitting around. Which is what you do most of the time, as you wait for an event to suggest a book to the customer. This is almost like a “mini game” and honestly, a really innovative touch. But beyond that, selling time falls flat and could use a speed up button. There are some really neat things here that any bookworm would appreciate like the different genres, exploring the different titles and making suggestions to customers. And there are some quests to do, mind you I found a lot of them to be passive (like selling a certain genre in a location). Not all of them were like that, but they weren’t particularly engaging or memorable. This game certainly deserves recognition because this is a relatively untouched sub-genre. So I feel like it’s important to support such endeavours. And I could genuinely feel the passion for books here and the ability to share that love with others. And I’ve enjoyed my 5 hours of gameplay. But can I see myself doing this for hours on end? Even with the decorating, unlocking different locations and quests, there isn’t enough variance in gameplay to keep me engaged and coming back. So if you want to support this as a fellow book lover, by all means. But in terms of gameplay and getting your moneys worth, I think waiting for a sale makes more sense. Because I can see how the monotonous daily activity can get boring quickly. If this game were a book, it would be short and sweet. One I’m grateful to have picked up and experienced. And whilst I probably won’t pick it up to read again, it has earned its little nook on my shelf ^_^
