This is a productivity timer more than it is a game, please keep that in mind as you read this review. I am happy because this product is perfect for what it was aiming to do: Provide a study tool that's fun and limits the amount of time spent using a device for unproductive means. The customization is cool. Almost everything aside from certain spirit companions, outfits and environments are offered to the base game users. This includes Collab cosmetics and music. You can customize colors, customize your spirit companions, customize your outfit, customize your room, customize your ambience, etc. The ambience you start with in the base game is the ambience you get throughout the dlcs as well. Actually I played this game before the first DLC was even announced and I still had a lot of cosmetics to unlock far after I unlocked all of the spirit companions. My options were always plentiful and if I wasn't so greedy then I wouldn't even have gotten the DLCs. Customizing the UI is also an option. You can also hide the Ui, change the colors of the UI...Basically, what I love most about this game is that it can be personalized so easily. That is definitely its biggest strength. I haven't had any issues with glitches and such and the optimization settings are easy to access so when you have the game running in the background you can have it take up little to no Memory (which is much easier on your computer/laptop than leaving it running full blast the whole time). Dlcs: Now for the DlCs. Is the base game worth its 12 dollar price point? That is definitely up to you. However, I do think the DLCS are priced a little high for what they are compared to the main game. I'm unsure if they add any of the DLC companions to the base game but I think $9 per DLC is a little high even considering how high effort they are. I also think it's unfair for people who buy the base game at full price. I love the cosmetic options and I love being able to unlock more spirit buddies and I CERTAINLY love the DLC environments but I don't know, $9 per DLC feels just a little high. I think what would make the $9 per dlc worth it is if each DLC had its own original album or original collection. Nothing big, but even just a four song album would make the DLCs feel 9 dollars worth. Or even reducing the price and then releasing some of the Spirits in the OVERALL compendium rather than having just a new section of the compendium being DLC exclusive. I suppose when I'm speaking of DLCs I'm thinking about the kitchen and the garden DLCs in specific. These are the only ones that don't really feel deserving of the $9 for me. The All Aboard DLC was phenomenal and the upcoming magical library DLC excites me a lot. I suppose I just want them to provide more content to the base game outside of collabs and would enjoy a unique music selection other than having to use the browser or the file upload. Oh and the level up ability starts to scale very slowly around the level 50 mark. I'm fine with locating spirits longer but the longer it takes to level up the more my reward system suffers. Just a personal little thing. Other than cosmetics and stuff though this game works spectacularly for what it does. For me $12 for the base game was a perfect price, some of the dlcs ARE really worth it (The All Aboard DLC is my favorite) but others may not hit that mark. But that's okay because no collab content is locked behind a paywall. It's also okay because the base game is already high quality and you'll be occupied with it for a while, you might not even want the dlc after this anyway.
For me, this is not the best productivity tool, but it is the best self-care tool. Why is it not the best productivity tool? Let me be clear: it is a good productivity tool, just not the best. One reason it's not the best is because it's hefty. Whenever the game is running, it requires my laptop to be always plugged in and the fans are always whirring. It would be nice if I could run the game somewhere away from a plug socket and place my laptop on my legs without setting my jeans on fire. The other reason Spirit City: Lofi Sessions isn't the best for productivity is the very same reason people, including me, love it. It is gamified and it is highly customisable. Between the base game, both released DLC and the upcoming garden DLC, there are a lot of spirits to discover. Who could resist collecting them all? And you can customise your character, your surroundings, the items your character interacts with like their laptop, you can choose a location and activity, choose a spirit companion, customise your spirit companion, and choose your playlist and soundscape. And you have multiple presets so you can do that five times over! Spending time on this is utterly lovely but it probably doesn't count as productivity... Why is it the best self-care tool? Well, all that customisation makes it feel like you're entering your very own safe space. Everything is just as you want it and your favourite spirit companion is there waiting for you whenever you start up the game <3 I love the spirits, especially Kettlebrew! I love their companionship, reading about them in the spiritdex and I love the background story of being an aspiring spiritographer who has travelled to the big city to study them. The home you've made yours that is filled with adorable spirits creates a setting that makes it feel like the practical features of the game are supporting you rather than pushing. There is a to-do list, a timer, a habit tracker and a journal. In the morning, or the evening before, I can write my to-do list for the day ahead so that I can move forward with a sense of direction. The timer nudges me to work just a little longer and push through to the break. Equally, it's good to have a prompt to take breaks! The habits list offers a no-pressure reminder to complete those small daily tasks that are important to me. The journal is just what I need when I'm getting overwhelmed. It allows me to get the muddle of thoughts in my head down on "paper" and reflect on how I'm actually feeling. These four features in combination make this game a powerful self-care tool for me. Spirit City: Lofi Sessions gently encourages me to complete healthy habits, check in with myself and take a moment to breathe. This game really does make a positive difference to my everyday life. I brought this game around the time it released, only because a few others in my class at Uni had been doing so. Since then I have opened it just about every time I have worked on assignments, I have got every achievement, and reached level 174 in game. As I am writing this I have just submitted the last assessment for my degree, with 1830 hours in this game. This productivity tool has helped me so much through all of my studies, using the checklists, stopwatch, and journal, as well as just to have a comforting scene running on a different monitor to help ease some stress. The game offers plenty of customisation, which only gets better with every update, allowing you to create the perfect cozy space for you and your lofi avatar. I lastly want to note the developers, as they're amazing too! Always listening to feedback, and making the best decisions when it comes to DLC, payments, and new content. I hope they are all really proud of what they have created. 10/10
Absolutely cozy game experience, you often see youtube videos with anime girls chilling somewhere and listen to lofi playlists. In this game you can choose yourself, where, what and who you want to be, and what to listen to, and all of that with a cute little pet by your side you choose! You can level up and get more pets, set timers, get tasks done. Great game for lofi lovers.
