People in some reviews are calling this "We have Persona at home". Not far off but technically its more of "what if Trails of Cold Steel and Ys got an offspring". It borrows a lot of Cold Steel mechanics, except the battle system is from Ys (somewhat). Breakdown : - Great OST kept me going for hours. - I'm more of an action game player than turn based so this battle system suits me well. On normal, it felt quite easy for me. - Graphics is more than enough for me. It's a Vita game originally but it's a lot prettier than your average retro / indie games. - Story is where its a bit divisive. It's nothing epic, it's just like your average anime cliche story overall, but it got nice characters and good slice of life skits. It's basically an anime with monster of the week concept but in an RPG game package. Some will like it, some will hate it. I'm somewhat in the middle. - For this kind of story, the length is too much for me. I finished this at 48 hours and that's me trying to speed up the process, reading walkthroughs and talking to only key persons and getting only key events. Some people might like their games long, but not me. My sweet spot is around 30 hours only. There are better options out there, but I enjoyed my time with this game as a longtime Falcom fans. I just hope they would return to their roots again one day, and make 1 character Ys game again.

Tokyo Xanadu eX+ for those who don't know, is an enhanced re-release of a PS-vita title, the game features new side stories and an extra after story which really adds to the game as a whole, along with that you get a bunch of past DLC as part of the base game, new costumes exclusive to the new version and I believe a few new elements, (equipment pieces) albeit not the most fancy ones you'll get, it's a fun kind of spinoff Falcom game using ideas and some assets from their legend of heroes titles and it's a fun action game even now with a great storyline dood. ^-^ Okay full review time! So Tokyo Xanadu takes place in...Tokyo! As if that weren't obvious but a fantasy one, filled with similar yet non existent things to our world, you play as Kou Toukisaka among other characters you get along the way, a young man who takes on part time jobs after classes and gets himself taken to an eclipse trying to play hero, a labyrinth of sorts filled with monsters known as Greed! And it all get's crazy from there dood. The game is an action game, you can jump, (double jump in fact!) run, dodge roll with perfect dodge mechanics, you have a basic combo and ranged attack, later down the line you get two other types of attack that are important as enemies have damage types outside of their elemental weaknesses and there's a switch mechanic between a total of three characters that you can play in a dungeon, what's more you are ranked at the end up to S rank for damage taken, time, boxes broken *insert crash bandicoot noise* treasures found, elemental weakness kills and Greeds killed, the rank does play a form of important role I'll talk about though later dood. Dungeons start off very basic but as time goes on you will find things such as traps and puzzles to go along with the enemies, making for extremely dangerous dungeons that will hurt and status effect the heck out of you, the enemy types are quite varied at that too with some great designs to them, bosses too and at first they will challenge the heck out of you, this games damages are no joke, to the point healing items feel like they could be useless sometimes because an enemy will drop you with a certain attack before you get to heal but also with the right equipment that ends up not being too much of an issue if you're on the ball dood. The game also consists of quests and answering things correctly, this is important because the rewards for finishing the quests and maxing out wisdom as well as courage will get you some of the best equipment in the game, courage is raised by getting S rank in stages as I said I'd mention, wisdom for reading books and answering certain things correctly and Kindness from doing quests, it really makes for a great reason to do it all dood. The game also has friendship stuff, again you'll find these are actually great to do, besides getting friend notes at times, (which you want if you're doing an achievement run which means you'll be doing multiple runs so getting a piece of great equipment for it) you also level up their friendship up to level 6, each level netting you in combat benefits that expand on a variety of combat effects I've neglected to mention such as their super attack which I realise is early on enough I can mention and two other combat mechanics too dood. The story is a crazy one and really knows how to hit at the heart, the characters are all charming in their own ways but I expect that from a Falcom game along with the great soundtrack to really emphasise all the great moments in the game, it may be dated look wise but it more than makes up for it everywhere else dood. The game also has *shudders* a few mini games, they aren't all that bad honestly despite my disdain for all things mini game and you don't have to actually play any bar one of them for friend notes and some real nice rewards, again some of the best stuff in the game even but it's not vantage masters at least so I lived lol dood. Okay last thing to cover and that's elements, these along with armour and accessories are gems that go onto your weapon, they basically work like orbaments in the legend of heroes games and give you a bunch of stat boosts or handy effects, the grid also has three handy in combat slots you can upgrade too which will make surviving and hurting things a lot easier and more fun to do, it's a fun system dood! And that's it, the game does have two general issues, that being for some reason once you've changed the inputs, (because I hate the current button layout) it sometimes forgets you did that and defaults back to normal for a second and also once you open the map if you're holding forward to get a running start you'll find your characters moving left and right but not forward which is actually kind of funny to look at but otherwise the games stellar and does a lot of fun things, I hope if you buy the game you enjoy it as much as I have! Thank you for reading dood. ^-^

A somewhat lesser entry in Falcom's catalogue, this one is kind of like if Trails of Cold Steel was set in the real world in Tokyo and leaned a bit more heavily on the whole Persona formula, but for some weird reason opted to have a real time action combat system more similar to Ys but way more simplistic and somewhat bland. The story itself is pretty generic and the characters are also pretty cliché, hitting most of the same beats you've seen half a dozen times in the Trails series, but it's still entertaining enough. Group of teenagers, half o which don't like each other at first because they embody stereotypes such as loner, ex-delinquent, snobby girl, awkward techie, etc, get pulled into some demon-killing when a series of gates leading to pocket dimensions start popping up. It's basically like if you took the Reverie Corridor or The Garden or one of those things from the Trails series and made a whole game out that idea but still didn't really develop it that much. I had fun with it and made it all the way to the real ending and the After Story chapter, but I'd say it's ultimately merely an okay game. If I had to compare the experience to something, I'd say it's like watching a generic action anime that resembles some way more famous and better show and, though it's not the worst thing ever, it's just a way to kill time and you'll probably forget everything or most about it in a week, even if you did enjoy the experience while you were engaged in it. So far I've played all the Trails and Ys games released in the west, as well as Nayuta, and this one is probably the one I've liked least of those two dozen games, but it was still fun enough that I'd be open to playing a sequel that improves upon the formula.

Fantastic IP from Falcom! With Persona, Ys, and Trails DNA, Tokyo Xanadu eX+ has a winning formula that deserves a sequel. The graphics are nothing special, but nobody who's really into Falcom games cares about that as long as the story, characters, music, and gameplay are solid, and Falcom got it right with this one.

It's not quite Ys, it's not quite Trails, but it's got the fun action combat of the former and the charming character interactions of the latter, so it's good enough!
