I'll be honest - the only thing that keeps me hooked on this game is the atmosphere. That snowy, desolate New York City is absolutely breathtaking. The visuals, the sound design, the little stories told through abandoned apartments and scattered notes... it's pure immersion. And the music? Man, that song on the radio, "Gone to Sleep," is absolutely perfect for this world. It's haunting, emotional, and fits the mood of a city falling apart perfectly. That track alone got me every single time it played. The mission design, though? Classic "go here, grab that, come back" routine. Lazy and repetitive. But here's what really stings. This game is basically dead now. The online population is tiny, and finding random teammates is next to impossible. I don't have any friends to squad up with, so I went in solo, fully knowing what I was getting into. And let me tell you, it's rough. Enemies are bullet sponges, you get swarmed constantly, and the difficulty is clearly balanced for a full team. Playing alone feels like an uphill battle from start to finish. And yet, despite all that, I actually love this game. I keep coming back to it. Not for the quests, not for the combat, but for that world and that music. They pull me in every time, no matter how frustrating the rest gets. Yeah, I suffer through it, but somehow I still enjoy the ride.
I completed this game in 2020 when Ubisoft gave it away for free. Later, I bought it on Steam as part of a collection during a sale and revisited the game. It’s a third-person shooter focused on combat, cover mechanics, and gear upgrades. Stronger enemies require a tactical approach, and skills are unlocked by improving your base. The game is well optimized and runs stably even on older systems. The atmosphere is one of its highlights. Snow-covered streets, empty buildings, and small details like footprints make the world feel realistic. Music and sound design add to the immersive setting. Combat is solid, though the story and characters are less memorable. Endgame mostly focuses on collecting better gear, which may feel repetitive for some players. Overall, it’s a well-made action RPG with strong gameplay, immersive environments, and stable performance.
Recommendation: 90% Carries hard by atmosphere and interesting lore. Make sure to experience this beautiful snowy New York before the game gets shut down. Has some issues, like a very difficult and stuffy endgame for solo players, but overall a great experience. Easy to recommend
***FOR EVERYONE WITH THE LAUCH ISSUE OF OFFLINE, PLEASE READ BEFORE REFUNDING, THE GAME'S SERVERS ARE LIVE*** Hey guys, I just wanted to share some insight, but do not be discouraged by the offline issue at the start of the game, because I too had the same problem. Biggest Tip for everyone who just bought it - watch through the entire intro cutscene to the Division 1 - it will say after 20-30 seconds "could not connect to the online servers" repeatedly until the cutscene is completely finished; Do not stop pressing start and just keep pressing until the cutscene finishes, and then the game will register that you're online on the servers and you can make your character and play the game normally I promise! I really hope this helps, and looking forward to hopefully seeing some people play this awesome game <3 Give it another shot, it's worth every second : )
