The Nightdive remaster of Turok does a solid job of bringing a very ’90s FPS into a more playable modern form without sanding off its rough edges. What still stands out is the sense of speed and movement. Turok feels fast, responsive, and physical. The weapon arsenal is another highlight. There’s a good amount of variety, and the guns feel powerful and distinct, which helps keep combat engaging across the game’s lengthy levels. Speaking of levels, they’re large and full of verticality. While they don’t quite reach the level design highs of something like Jedi Knight, they’re very characteristic of late-’90s FPS design and give the game a strong identity. The last two levels, which lean more into a futuristic and linear structure, are especially fun and feel like a strong finish. For a 1997 game, the visuals still hold up reasonably well, and the remaster’s native Linux port is a big plus. The overall gameplay density keeps things engaging despite the game’s age. That said, some of the old-school frustrations are still very much present. Progression can be cryptic at times, especially when it comes to key locations. Platforming can also be annoying, particularly when combined with the game’s first-person perspective and momentum-heavy movement. There’s essentially no story to speak of, which won’t bother everyone but does make the experience feel more mechanically driven than narratively engaging. The soundtrack and sound design are also fairly forgettable. Overall, the Nightdive remaster preserves what made Turok memorable while making it far more accessible on modern systems. It’s fast, dense, and mechanically satisfying, but still very much a product of its time. If you enjoy classic FPS design and can tolerate some dated quirks, it’s a recommendation. Rating: 3.5/5

A classic shooter with strong atmosphere. It’s clearly outdated by today’s standards, but still worth playing. Remake would be nice.

A very old N64 title from back when I was just a kid and always wanted to own and beat it like the older kids. You play as an indian guy with a bow and knife killing dudes with guns, dinosaurs, and other things I would rather not spoil. Simple concept but if you are overly reckless could easily become frustrating. Good weapon variety for a game of its age as well as enemy variety too. Very much enjoyed playing it all the way through all these years later. Achievement hunters beware. Turok:Treasure hunter achievement MUST be saved and overwritten in the same save file for all the secret areas to count. Don't do what I did and have to do it all over again.

Good old turok game. I never managed to play through it in my childhood. Now I've finally managed it and I have to say it's a unique game for its time. I'm already looking forward to the fourth part! It took me a relatively long time to complete the full achievements, a whole 19 hours. But cool game and nice memories!

TUROK 1 = excellent, 10/10, finished offline. Outstanding job by Nigthdive Studios, one of their best, totally updated, added to, zero blinding fog, QOLs, keyboard mapping, bobbing level select, etc, etc, the works. A remaster meant another gameplay for me, so good. They even added a full roster of cheats in a cheat menu, do anything you want, full freedom. Complete explaining in a Steam forum/Discussions post. - NOTES: - Also fantastic: Turok 2 !! Rather unassuming simple start and graphics, but it turns into a complex, attention grabbing game, a joy to complete for me. Had to use a walkthrough to get so many specials, though, worthwhile. - ( Turok 3 -Three-: Beware, DON'T play, terribly awful original game. Forget the Turok character, dies in the badly made cutscene before the game begins. Then choose your pitiful and risible hero, girl Danielle or youngster Joseph. N64 levels of bare, empty locations.)
