Turok 2: Seeds of Evil is the sequel to the previous game in the series, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. Much like it's predecessor, it is an FPS game were you will take on the role of a man named Turok (But not the same guy from the previous game.) to kill dinosaurs, monsters, aliens while you explore large, sprawling levels. And just like the previous game, it originally came out on the N64, with an initial PC port that was just as bad as the PC port of the first game. But again, Nightdive Studios released a proper port. I played the N64 version way back in the day, but never managed to finish it, even when using cheat codes. I am also biased towards Turok 2 slightly more than the first game, purely because it was the game I played first, but both games have their own charm and solid gameplay. Compared to the first game, Turok 2 has a bit more focus on story this time around, having proper cutscenes, something that the third game would go even further with later on. The plot involves an alien that got awakened after the ending of the first game, and stopping his plans to destroy the universe. Simple and easy. It offers more narrative than the first game, but less than the third, which I think is the perfect sweet spot. Unlike the first game though, you wont just navigate levels to find keys and reach the end like the first one. Every level involves various mission objectives, like rescuing captured children or destroying ammo caches. You MUST complete these objectives before reaching the end of the stage or else you won't be able complete the level. Keys still need to be found to access later levels. Graphics, animations and shooting mechanics have been improved. Saving works differently this time around too. Rather than having specific spots where you can save the game, Turok 2 allows you to save anywhere at anytime, which some people would say makes the game too easy, but trust me when I say this: Playing through Hardcore difficulty in the Hive of Mantids, when you get to that room with those turrets on the ceiling? You'll thank God that quicksaving and quickloading is a thing. Positives include: - Boss battles: There are only four bosses in the game, but I think they are an improvement over the bosses from Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. Small enemies might show up, you have to stand in a certain spot to avoid damage, and shoot specific parts of the boss to damage them. They aren't perfect and some might consider the fights to be gimmicky, but they are more engaging than the "walk-backwards-and-shot-until-the-enemy-dies" from the the first game. - Weapons: Turok 2 has more weapons this time around and they are greater in variety, including a flamethrower, charge dart rifle to eletrocute enemies and the infamous cerebral bore, a weapon that most people think of when they think of Turok 2 (It even inspire the name of a Scottish death-metal band). The shooting in general feels better, as you have a proper crosshair this time around. - Music: The tracks you hear throughut the game are very good, fitting the mood of each level you visit. The theme for the Port of Adia is burnt into my brain, along with theme of the final level. - Enemies: There is great enemy variety here. bio-engineered dinosaurs, bugs with energy weapons, giant brutes etc. They all have unique sounds, animations and some of them act smarter than enemies from the first game that would just rush towards you or shot at you while standing still in one spot. Some enmies will take cover, run away or even blow themselves up before they die to try and damage you. The animations and gore for the enemies is also vastly improved, shooting them in certain spots with certain weapons will make body parts be blown off or apart. Blowing a giant hole through the chest of enemies is also something you'll see. There are no humans this time around, just you and a bunch of other disgusting freaks to shoot. Negatives include: - Level design: The first game had 8 levels in total, while Turok 2 only has 6, albeit much larger and complex than those in the first game. Turok 2's levels has been a point of contention back when the game first came out and is still are to this day. They are massive and maze-like, with backtracking and thorough exploration a necessity to get to the end AND complete all objectives. I really like that the levels are large, but compared to the first game, a lot of the time you are walking in identical-looking hallways with not enough landmarks. Having played and replayed the game as much as I did, this is not an issue for me, but for anyone else playing the game for the first time, simply getting to the end of the level could be a very frustrating experience, even more so when you find out that you missed saving one kid or sealing a tunnel and have to go back. One of the QoL features included in the game is having objective markers, but these only appear when you are close to something and it can be turned of if you want the original experience. "Lair Of The Blind Ones" will probably awaken some awful memories for people who played through the game during the N64 days, when internet guides weren't as numerous and accessible as now. All the issues I mentioned earlier about going through identical corridors become the absolute worst in this level. I personally don't think it is as bad as many people claim it is, but it is my least liked level in the game, and my suggestion is that you check up on a guide for the first time you play through it, just to save yourself the frustration of getting lost or missing an objective. - Multiplayer: This version of Turok 2 has the option for online multiplayer PvP with dedicated servers, but these were only active early on when the game came out on steam. The multiplayer scene is mostly dead, last I checked. Unless you can get some friends to play with you, you're probably not going to experience it. From what I heard from other people, the multplayer felt janky, so you're not missing out on much. - Less dinosaurs: If you don't count the weird, humanoid dinosaur hybrids, you barely get to fight or meet dinosaurs. You come across generic "raptor" enemies that you will encounter, and at one point you get to ride on the back of a Styracosaurus. There is a distinct lack of dinosaurs compared to the first game. This is a cardinal sin, in my opinion. Final thoughts: All in all, Turok 2 is a worthy sequel to the first game, but not perfect. Still, I consider the series to have peaked here, as I find the third game to be worse than the first two, and every game afterwards ranged from mediocre to bad. If you like the first game, then I can recommmend Turok 2. Just be prepared for large levels that can be overwhelming for a first time player. Lastly. Locate the energy totem. And defend it at ALL costs.
