For longtime fans of classic mecha anime, UFO Robot Grendizer – The Feast of the Wolves is more than just a game—it’s a time capsule. Based on the legendary Go Nagai series from the 1970s, the game attempts to resurrect the iconic space robot and its brooding pilot, Duke Fleed, for a new generation. Unfortunately, while the heart is in the right place, the execution is more uneven than epic. The game splits its identity across several styles: third-person brawling, rail-shooting segments in space, and occasional on-foot exploration. While this variety keeps the action from feeling too one-note, none of the gameplay types are particularly deep. Combat with Grendizer is flashy but basic—most fights devolve into spamming heavy attacks and waiting for cooldowns. A few standout boss battles bring some excitement, but they’re too far between repetitive skirmishes against identical UFO minions. One welcome feature is the transformation sequences. Switching from the Spazer (flight mode) to robot form mid-fight nails that dramatic anime energy. Still, these moments are often undermined by awkward controls and camera angles that don’t keep up with the action. The art direction is clearly made with love. Grendizer’s design is faithfully recreated, and there's a definite joy in seeing his signature attacks—like Screw Crusher Punch or Space Thunder—unleashed in glorious explosions. But while the models of mechs look decent, environments are sparse and bland, and animations can feel stiff. The soundtrack is a high point, featuring dramatic, orchestral cues that echo the anime’s spirit. But the lack of Japanese voice acting and the flat English performances detract from emotional moments. It’s a missed opportunity not to lean into the series' dramatic roots more fully. The story closely follows the original series: Duke Fleed, a prince from a destroyed planet, defends Earth from the Vegan invasion. The plot is serviceable, if predictable, and the game does a solid job introducing key characters like Koji Kabuto and Professor Umon. But the dialogue is often stilted, and emotional stakes rarely feel earned. You’re told there’s a great war raging, but it often feels like you’re just clearing out waves of cannon fodder. Even on modern consoles, Feast of the Wolves struggles to stay smooth. Frame rate drops are frequent during heavy battles, and I encountered occasional bugs, like enemies getting stuck or audio cutting out. It’s not game-breaking, but it’s enough to sap some of the fun. Rating: 7/10

Grendizer is the first anime I've ever watched, around the end of the 70ies (in my native French). I've got the DVDs, the mangas and the Kana comic by Dorison/Bajram/Cossu/Sentenac/Guillo (name: Goldorak). I've hesitated buying this game for a long time but a friend who got it told be it was a lot of fun. He was so sure I would love it, he offered to give me the money for it (16 EUR, during the sales). That was enough to convince me so I declined and I bought it immediately. I'm glad I did. The musics, the design, the story, the spirit of the thing ... I got goosebumps. I've played for six hours straight and I've loved every minute of it. (I've spent the day humming various songs of the show.) I explore everything fully and I expect my way requires a total of about ten hours to reach the end of the game. Rushers may do it in about seven hours. The fights are relatively easy but I find them satisfying: dodge, counter, attack using Grendizer's various weapons. As easy as it is, less that 8 percent players manage to win against the first boss. (You get one chance to do it as you are meant to flee in the end) There are also shoot-them-up sections, both with the Spazer and small yellow ship of Koji Kabuto/Lance Hyatt/Alcor. Among the achievements, one requires you to die: I've yet to get it. I've read many complains about the technical state of the game. I'm playing with a gamepad on a "small" 7600X / RX6650XT / 32GB / SSD and loading times are under 5 seconds and I've seldom noticed anything bad worth mentioning. Note that I'm playing on Proton/Linux. If your are a gamer with any kind of love for the original material (a.k.a: a fan), this game is for you. Get it on a sale if you value the price/hours ratio but get it.

I enjoyed this game. I loved the controls whether piloting the Grendizer, TFO, or Spazer. The only issue with this game is that it is entirely too short. This excellent game could be a great game through DLC expansion. That being said, here are 10 suggestions for how to expand this game: 1) Boss Rush Mode - The Boss fights are fun in this game, I would love to revisit the fights in Boss Rush where I can enter an arena and do combat with my fully upgraded Dizer 2) Vega horde survival mode - similar to Boss Rush, sometimes I just want never-ending enemies to crowd control, hit and evade, and build up my special attacks to feel satisfied releasing them on a big group of enemies. 3) Spazer and TFO separate bonus missions and mode. 4) More Bonus memory missions 5) Expand the area map with more with extended play to really have fun continuing the fight after Grendizer is maxed out on upgrades 6) Other unlockable robots - This game definitely needs Mazinger and Great Mazinger (let Koji unlock Mazinger by flying a series of TFO missions, and add Tetsuya Tsurugi and Great Mazinger ) 7) Never-ending Vega enemies spawning in old map areas and the ability to fight the boss of the area 8) Upgradable TFO and Spazer (once the grind is over for Dizer, then there is no point in the resources you gather). 9) More side quests where there is interaction with the townsfolk. I particularly enjoyed the escort missions and the repair missions. 10) More mission maps that take place on planet Vega, planet Fleed, and the Moon for Dizer, TFO, and Spazer Missions The overall message is please increase the replay value in this very good game and give the fans even more to enjoy.

Got this game thru Steam's digital store when it was on sale just late April of this year. I grew up watching Super Robot animes during the late 1970's thru early 1980's. Being from Philippines, I became a fan of "Mazinger Z" & "Voltes V(five)" when I was just 4 or 5 years old. Before coming to the States, my parents & I moved to the Middle East (Saudi Arabia) during the early 80's thru early 90's. This was when I first heard of "Grendizer" watching its episodes. Even though I didn't understand Arabic (wished they had put english subtitles), I still enjoyed watching the action and fighting sequences of "Grendizer". It's good to know that I later found out that "Mazinger Z", & "Grendizer" were both Go Nagai's creations. Anyways, going back to this game. I didn't have any high expectations for this game. This may not be on par with AAA games. But it really surprised me. The story IMO was very good. The gameplay was great, though there were some minor glitches which can be fixed by the devs., it may bother some, but to me is not a big deal. Some of the boss fights IMO were challenging but not too hard. You just have to learn the timing and patterns for each boss. I like that you can upgrade your skills and weapons especially the "Space Thunder". I also like the cel-shaded graphics kind of 70's, 80's, & 90's retro. The music and sound effects were great especially Grendizer's theme song. My one & only gripe is that this game is short even though we got extra DLC (Deluxe upgrade bonus mission). To me it's not a deal breaker. Man, can't wait for a sequel (Grendizer II), if only they can also make a stand alone game for "Mazinger Z" or even "Voltes V(five)". Overall, I would recommend this game to fans of Super Robots & Mechs from the late 70's, 80's, 90's & Beyond! :) Story= 4.5/5 Stars; Gameplay= 5/5 Stars; Graphics= 5/5 Stars; Music/SFX= 5/5 Stars; Replay= 4/5 Stars; Overall= 5/5 Stars
