This remaster brings the 2005 classic into the modern era while preserving its biggest charm: crazy parodies of classic video games. You'll find references to everything from Shadow the Hedgehog and Mario to Lara Croft, along with plenty of other gaming references that will make you smile. For a casual player, this is a relatively easy adventure that takes around 8–10 hours to finish. However, if you're an achievement hunter looking to get that satisfying 100% on your Steam profile, the game has a few challenges that stretch the experience to a very enjoyable 21 hours. 🎮 Gameplay & Atmosphere Gameplay-wise, this is a classic action-platformer with beat 'em up elements. You play as Asterix and Obelix, beating up Roman legionaries with their signature Gaulish punches, collecting helmets (the game's currency), and solving simple puzzles along the way. Humor: This is easily the game's greatest strength. The dialogue, poster jokes, enemy animations, and constant references to iconic gaming franchises are genuinely entertaining, even after all these years. The developers clearly had fun making this game, and it shows. Combat & Pacing: Beating up dozens of Romans is a lot of fun at first, but the repetitive encounters can become tiring as you approach the later stages. Fortunately, the game ends before the combat becomes too much of a chore. 🏆 Achievement Hunting — What to Expect The achievement list is straightforward and fair. The best part for completionists is that there are no permanently missable achievements. Once you finish the story, you can use chapter selection to revisit levels and collect anything you missed. Here are the main challenges you'll face on your way to 100%: 1. Getting Gold on Every Challenge Arena This is the hardest achievement in the game. You need to earn a gold rank in every combat challenge. Enemies attack in waves, the timer keeps ticking, and there's very little room for mistakes. Some arenas can be frustrating until you learn the best strategies and fully upgrade your characters. 2. Collecting Everything You'll need to explore every corner of Las Vegum to collect helmets, postcards, and souvenirs. Some collectibles are hidden behind destructible objects or tucked away in places you might easily overlook. Thorough exploration is essential if you want to finish everything. 3. Farming Currency To unlock all the available upgrades from the merchant, you'll need a considerable amount of helmets. This means spending some extra time farming currency, especially if you haven't collected enough during the main story. 💡 Achievement Hunter Tips Don't rush the arenas! When the game first introduces you to the combat challenges, don't waste too much time trying to get gold immediately. Leave them until the end, after you've completed the story and fully upgraded your characters' health, damage, and combo abilities. With stronger characters, the arenas become much easier and faster to complete. Explore every corner. Postcards and diamond helmets are often hidden on elevated platforms or behind scenery that the camera doesn't immediately reveal. Check dead ends, side paths, and suspicious-looking corners whenever you're exploring a level. Farm helmets efficiently. If you're missing currency near the end of the game, don't worry. Replaying your favorite combat arena with score multipliers active can help you earn the remaining helmets much faster than wandering around looking for small amounts. Use both characters' strengths. Make good use of Asterix and Obelix rather than relying on just one character. Obelix is great for knocking around groups of tougher enemies, while Asterix is effective against weaker enemies and can help you build up points for special attacks. It's a great game to play when you want to take a break from massive RPGs or hardcore survival games and enjoy something lighter. The humor, nostalgic atmosphere, and countless references to classic video games make it worth playing even today. The combat can get repetitive, and some of the gold arena challenges will test your patience, but the achievement list is fair, and you don't have to worry about permanently missing anything. I spent 21 hours getting 100% completion and unlocking every Steam achievement, and the time flew by with a smile on my face. If you enjoy old-school games, funny platformers, and relatively accessible 100% completions, I'd definitely recommend giving this one a try! Should've been a no-brainer to recommend, but OSome Studio fumbled the bag with the issues surrounding keyboard support and FPS drops; good thing I took a few minutes to look for a solution to the latter, as after that it ran fine, but it shouldn't be like that. Back in the early 2010s, I had low expectations for this game after playing its predecessor, whose absurd amount of crates is still the stuff of my nightmares. That, however, helped make Asterix & Obelix XXL 2 a huge surprise, given how much it improves over the first episode. Gone are those barren levels, replaced by varied, tightly designed, interconnected locations, so much so that sometimes an area of Las Vegum can be seen from another in the distance. A more refined combat system, trading less frequent use of special moves - they can be executed only after drinking a magic potion - for a better set of basic moves, and a system of mini-rewards that encourages their use. Simple but fun environmental puzzles. Much fewer crates, thankfully. Most importantly, the game has loads of personality, as Las Vegum is chock-full of video game references; few other titles have ever had so many. They range from blatant ones, like the several types of Roman soldiers that look and act like video game icons, or hieroglyphics full of Space Invaders , to smaller and more difficult-to-spot ones, like lambda symbols, to more obscure ones, like the sword and boxers of Maximo (remember that?). It's a veritable time capsule of gaming in the mid-2000s. There are a few references unrelated to games, like the main areas being modelled on the most iconic Las Vegas hotels (well, duh). The only sore thumbs are some names - Sam Shieffer, Larry Craft, seriously? Couldn't they come up with names more in line with the Asterix setting? Among such a sea of creativity, they apparently ran out of ideas when designing boss fights, as all of them consist of arenas where the environment must be used to knock out a giant super-soldier, so that his weak spot can be exposed and struck. Not even that fun the first time, imagine the fourth. While the original version looks nice even today, it has a ridiculous LOD reduction even at short distances, something that of course doesn't happen here, on top of redone textures and improved character models, without losing the original style. It won't suddenly look like a brand-new game but, for a cartoony one, it looks pretty good even today, thanks to the original art direction. Shame only about some UI elements that were originally in 3D but are now just flat, and the pre-rendered videos that have stayed exactly the same, so much so that they are played by default in a smaller portion of the screen; the ability to press a button to see them in fullscreen only reveals how dated their compression is. This remaster, curated by many of the original developers, offers several quality-of-life improvements, like fast travel and multiple difficulty levels in place of the only one, and fairly low, that was there originally. Shops allow you to buy some upgrades. The postcards, which originally required grinding for a lot of helmets to unlock all of them, are now collectibles found through exploration. Special challenges are also present in some locations, if one feels inclined to tackle them. I once again wish this remaster wasn't plagued by those technical issues, but the game itself, while not a masterpiece, is still quite solid and grants a good dozen hours of fun. It's possibly the best title based on the Asterix franchise, along with the 1992 Konami arcade game; it's also unfortunate that nothing better than this has been done over the last two decades, especially as recent Asterix games betray quite low budgets.
Asterix & Obelix XXL 2 is one of those games that instantly brings back childhood memories. I remember having so much fun with Asterix and Obelix when I was younger, and playing this game now feels like going back to those good old days. The game is fun, colorful, funny, and full of that classic Asterix atmosphere. The combat is simple but enjoyable, and there are plenty of little things to explore along the way. Definitely a game I would recommend to anyone who grew up with Asterix. For me, it’s not just a game it’s a piece of my childhood.
This remaster is really weird. While it's still as good as the classic and has some quality of life improvements like better graphics and warping, they feel a bit hastily slapped together. Some features from the PS2 original were also removed, such as rewatching cutscenes and multiple saves. Overall, I can't go back to the PS2 version and this remaster is good
