I wasn't expecting to write such a long review for this game. Since it exceeded my expectations, I think it deserves a solid review. Additionally, I don't know and couldn't understand how it received such a low score on Metacritic. Instead of 58, it definitely deserves a score between 65 and 75. After WRC 4, it felt like a breath of fresh air XD. Gameplay and Mechanics The gameplay is completely arcade. It is not a pure simulation, but the mechanics are quite enjoyable. It is reminiscent of those "fun-oriented" yet consistent driving mechanics found in Midnight Club and the older NFS series. On the other hand, there is a lot of content in the game. With Rally, Rallycross, Hillclimb, and Extreme-Khana (a successful adaptation of Gymkhana), the content is kept rich. Because each has different cars and gameplay, it maintains the game's pacing nicely. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails?id=3686611676 I also want to mention two mechanics that surprised me. One is the sponsor mechanic, and the other is manually operating the headlights and windshield wipers ourselves. Speaking of the sponsor mechanic: the brands of the cars we drive can sponsor us. Along with this, of course, we can also get different sponsorships, and this positively impacts our economy. We cannot accept sponsors outright, and I really liked that. Sponsors have requirements—for instance, being faster than a certain lap time on a specific track. Instead of keeping things simple, I liked that they designed it this way. Moving on to the other mechanics: in night races, we sometimes drive through towns; for example, parts of the rally stages in Japan take place in small villages. While the town lights are on, they can strain your eyes or cause distractions. Here, we turn off the headlights ourselves and turn them back on when exiting the town; additionally, in races that start at sunset, we turn the headlights on ourselves as it gets dark. Regarding the wiper mechanic, we all know that dust is an absolute must in rallying. Personally, I play most racing games from the cockpit camera. After a while, our windshield gets so dusty that we start losing visibility, and that’s where the wiper mechanic comes in. Pressing the C key to activate the wipers clears the glass, and I think they managed to preserve realism despite it being an arcade game. Having talked this much about the vehicles and mechanics, it wouldn't do without mentioning the damage model. It has a successful damage mechanic. The car's chassis bends and deforms depending on where you hit. The more severe the collision, the more damage the internal components take. For example, if you start damaging the gears, the car struggles to shift. It feels well-executed and realistic. Additionally, we can repair our cars between races. Another mechanic preserving realism here will be familiar from other rally games: we have a set amount of time and must decide which parts to repair. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails?id=3686611580 Lastly, we shouldn't forget that we can hire crew members for our garage. We could hire specialists in 3 or 4 different fields, such as sales agents, engine engineers, etc. These mechanics have their own levels, and as we progress, we can hire better ones. We pay them weekly salaries, which I think is another detail that maintains realism. The more we drive our cars and gather data, the faster we can upgrade them. Graphics and Atmosphere In my opinion, the graphics are still adequate for today. The atmosphere, on the other hand, is quite successful. The atmospheric work in regions like Japan is very impressive. Night rallies completely transform the driving experience with changing lighting and visibility. Mechanics such as dusty windshields and having to manually trigger wipers support the atmosphere wonderfully. Driving across different countries and environments turned out to be extremely fun and pleasant. Music and Sound Effects Engine and environmental audio are generally solid. The engine sounds of the vehicles and their interaction with the surface are core elements supporting the atmosphere. The straining sounds produced when taking mechanical damage both give us feedback on the car's condition and maintain realism. The incredible audio that hits when bouncing off the rev limiter at high RPMs makes the gameplay even more enjoyable. Things I Disliked There isn't much I dislike about the game. Since I haven't really touched on negative aspects so far in the review, I'd like to mention a few parts I didn't care for. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails?id=3686611747 The gear shifting mechanic can be annoying at times; you have to hold the key for 1-2 seconds to shift into reverse, and learning this at the beginning can cost you dearly. As most of us know, in rally races you fight against the clock. When even 1-2 seconds are crucial, having this mechanic work like that is a bit frustrating. On the other hand, occasional FPS issues occur. The game locks itself to 60 FPS, and I end up having to fix it via settings. It is most likely an issue caused by the engine they used. Aside from these, I haven't run into anything that bothered me. Overall Evaluation As I stated above, I don't know why this game wasn't well received and scored so low. Yes, it has flaws and room for improvement. But in my opinion, it does not deserve this hatred and score. V-Rally 4 is not just a racing game; it is also a title where we manage our team and must take care of our car. I think we can even call it a kind of simulation. Details such as developing vehicles based on mechanics' experience and having to pay staff weekly wages force us to think strategically. Calculating time slots between stages to manage the budget and repair our car strengthens the career mode feel. Instead of a simple mechanic like buying parts purely with cash, gathering data with the car and combining it with the mechanic's knowledge sets it apart from other rally games. Sure, it is definitely not the best rally game out there, but it certainly deserves to be played. Finding a rally game that leans so close to a simulation in structure while retaining arcade vehicle mechanics is definitely not easy. Affordable, good physics, good selection of cars, really customizable while also having such an interesting and fun career mode. If you have a controller or just a keyboard buy this game, it wasnt buggy with my controller (like wrc) or too hard to learn (like DR2). This is just a good bang for the buck while giving a really nice experience for new comers to the "Rally sim" genre
I fell in love with the V-Rally series just recently. I grew up playing arcade racers but never rally games. Somehow, I ended up falling in love with rally racing and have played a LARGE number of rally games from the PS1 till now. V-Rally was always the more arcade alternative to rally and this game, though not by Eden Games(was Studios before) it still manages to deliver a fun arcade-ish experience. Its not easy but not rally game has ever been easy. I love it, give it a shot. Rally is hard, don't expect to be good right off the bat. Not unless you've been playing specifically rally games for a while.
THIS GAME IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! It so underrated. I played DiRT 2.0 for nearly 200 hours this past year. and discovered V rally 4 on Youtube the other day. For $2.99. So I checked it out. This game is one of the best rally games I have played. The physics are great. Playing with a Moza R12 on max. Zero problems with key binding (like in WRC that is a nightmare). Let me tell you. This is a workout. No JOKE! The handling is amazing on par with Dirt 2.0; better than the WRC games even though made by the same company. The music is awesome. The graphics are stunning. The dust bloom on this game, if you get turn around in a corner comes over the windshield. Dirt doesn't even do that!! I HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS GAME!!! You have to hire your engineers. Pay them a salary. There are fees to enter races. There are 4 types of game play. Rally, V-rally, buggy and hillclimb. They are all great. The only con I see is when driving through water it does not splash on the windshield. Who cares? That is not a deal breaker at all given all the other cool features of this game.
