It's disingenuous to call this a Valkyrie Profile game, even as a spin-off. The inspiration is there, yet the depth is skin-deep. To say there's a story is too generous. It's predictable and dull and the characters unfortunately share the same fate. With that said, without considering the trappings of Valkyrie Profile, the game is quite competent. Graphically, it's nothing to look at if we're talking technical specs, but the art direction makes up for it. The atmosphere of the environments are melancholic yet lovely, The character designs are striking and memorable. The music is penned by Valkyrie Profile's legendary Motoi Sakuraba and while not as bombastic as his existing catalogue, it's certainly a highlight of the game. The gameplay itself is a standard hack and slash a la Devil May Cry. There's multiple weapon types, chain combos, mission grading, grappling mechanics, and some platforming. Although there is character progression, the upgrade trees don't have build options or the luxury of a choice. The gameplay is undoubtedly fun. It's not exciting or blood pumping, but it's therapeutic and enjoyable. This is the game I'd play when I want to relax. It's very clear they had a budget and though they met it, they stretched it to its limit. It's not uncommon to face camera control issues. Sometimes it's just all the spell effects and action on the screen. There's a lot of monsters and you can effectively summon a full party of hack and slash spellcasters. Other times, it's just that the environments can be small and restrictive. The camera hitting a building or boundary isn't uncommon. Though Valkyrie Elysium has quite a few faults, especially as a game in a branded franchise, it still has merit as its own title. It's become a comfort game for me, but it certainly is a love it or hate it situation, so caution is required. Get it on sale and try to be mindful of refund times.

I had a wonderful time with this game! I'm not a long time fan of the series, i always found the original titles gorgeous looking and i always had interest on them, but this is the first game from the series i played and finished. So i believe for long time fans maybe it can be a little bit disappointing because it's not a jRPG anymore, but for me as a Ys series and action RPG fan, i absolutely loved this game too!

I am playing on the hardest "Valkyrie" difficulty, and I am loving it. It is more strategic of a game than I was expecting, encouraging you to play safe, divide and conquer, and not over commit. Your attack strings move you forward while pushing enemies back so positioning and target prioritization is a huge part of the combat. This game is much better than other reviews are giving it credit.

mid/10 button masher action game, about as interesting as a dynasty warriors title but without the big amount of content those have weak writing, bland environments, uninteresting level design for weebs, japanese VO has some VAs you might know, Akari Kito is the MC, Saori Hayami voices a side character, Tsuda Kenjiro is Odin If you played the Valkyrie Profile series from Square Enix, this is NOT one of those, do NOT get your hopes up, this isn't even half as cool I paid $30 and if I had played it during the two weeks after buying I would've refunded, it aint worth that, look for cheaper. Honestly only get this game if you don't feel guilty about throwing your leisure time in the trash.

I consider this game a baby souls games. I enjoyed the exploration and the combat mechanics. I liked the companions and their side quests. I know this game got some flack on release, but I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and time in the game. Don't get me wrong, the game isn't ground breaking, but the soundtrack, the graphics and the environments were enjoyable. Especially the soundtrack, I really didn't mind hearing the music while I played, while other games the music can get annoying. It's a bit of hack and slash mixed with some RPG elements, but it's fun.
