I'm not sure how to feel about this game. I adore the world- the lore behind the island and the protagonist are compelling for sure, and if I do decide to revisit this game, wanting to learn more will certainly be one of the bigger reasons for doing so. The construct fellows were very charming, I enjoyed running into them and listening to them talk about their lives and the history of the island. The game also seems to have multiple endings- I ended up picking a bad (consequentially, not that I didn't enjoy it) one, so I'd be interested in seeing what else it has in store there. The music and environment are great, too! I do think some light texture work on the environment is in order here and there- some of them are a little ugly, but they for the most part fit that old-school low-poly vibe well. The movement system, however, is shaky at best. It feels nice to move fast, and you'll have plenty of opportunity to do that in this game- that much is certainly enjoyable about it. But once you get enough crystals, it kinda just nullifies all of the platforming challenges. if you need height, vault up a wall a bunch, or just jump 12 or so times- it's not often that those fail. need distance? lunge into a glide repeatedly. This sort of cheesy-ness is something that I usually love about games, especially platformers, but it just doesn't feel that good here. I think it's because it doesn't feel earned- once you get five or six of these crystals (which doesn't take long), the challenges presented to the player essentially start to become optional. There isn't much depth to the moveset, either- it didn't feel like there was much to learn past the surface level, and having enough crystals means you don't need to improve very much, anyway. Combat is ok, but nothing to write home about. it's inoffensive. Ultimately, I'm not sure what exactly I would do personally to improve the game. I think it would serve it well to be a little more strict about where and how it hands out crystals. perhaps restricting their functionality in creative ways like how "A Short Hike" handles it's feathers in the latter stage of that game could make for more interesting platforming- this could even give better reason to make use of those orb things that replenish a crystal when you lunge at them, as right now they are redundant at best and best avoided at worst. I know it's gonna look a little silly to recommend this game at this point in this review, but I think the large majority of people are gonna like this game despite my personal gripes with its platforming system. I also think it's worth a playthrough for the setting- again, the characters and the story they tell are interesting enough to justify giving it a shot, and I think despite my criticisms laid out here, I ultimately had a pretty nice time.
Valkyrie Saga honestly feels like digging up a lost PSX game in the best way possible. The retro visuals and soundtrack absolutely nail that late-90s vibe, but it still plays smoothly and doesn’t feel clunky or dated. The movement is tight and satisfying. Running, climbing, gliding and dashing around the floating island just feels good. It’s one of those games where you keep moving because it’s fun to move. The exploration hits a nice balance too. Not overwhelming, but rewarding enough that you actually want to look around and see what’s hidden off the main path. What really stuck with me was the atmosphere. The world has personality. The lore is there if you want it, but it’s not shoved in your face. You can tell this was made with genuine care. If you’re into classic 3D platformers and miss that old school feel, this is 100% worth checking out. It feels passionate, focused, and just genuinely fun to play.
While I don't even have an hour in at time of review, I've got over ten hours in the demo. This game has been absolutely phenomenal. It has tons of secrets for the player to discover, some of which absolutely floored me that they'd be in the game. I've absolutely adored both the aesthetic and the gameplay of this game and cannot recommend it enough to anyone who takes even a marginal interest in either. It also works extremely well on Steam Deck.
