So far I am really enjoying the experience painting in VR. I have a couple thousand hours in Corel Painter, so its a bit of a different experience adjusting from using a Wacom tablet pen to doing things with the VR controller, but its very realistic how not only the oils behave on canvas but also mixing pigments. Considering the price is super reasonable over something like Corel Painters up to $500 license i would highly recommend this. Some Quality of Life/Accessibility additions id love to see for Vermillion from the Dev: Mostly to help with me being old with shaky hands, and to compensate from ♥♥♥♥♥♥ Index 1.0 lighthouse accuracy (I honestly cant tell which combination of both it is lol) [*]Let me resize the canvas larger that its current limit, id say at least Double maybe tripple its current limitation. It would really go a long way to doing fine detail when my hand shakes abit and my ♥♥♥♥♥♥ index 1.0 lightstation have jitter/low controller tracking resolution. [*]Why is the reference window limited to be so damn small?? Let me resize that probably 3x larger than its current limitation and/or add a zoom in function. I am currently having to export zoomed in cropped versions of what I'm working on to see the face of the subject be larger. [*]Id love to see a configurable reference grid on both the Canvas and reference image that could be toggled. I can potentially set it up myself on the reference image in paint . net but would be nice to match it in Vermillion. Would also help people new to (VR) painting. [*]Some of the VR brushes are resizable, some are not. Why? let me resize any of the brushes including the palette knife, and maybe let the range of the ones that are resizable go a little smaller/larger than they already are would be very helpful. [*]More than 3 notches to the paint by numbers outline detail setting, maybe more than 20 colors being the limit. Currently: You cant pin any menus in the VR space without the ability to interact with things like stations totally breaking, including picking up paint and putting it on the canvas. If you pin any menus in VR, like watching Youtube on Browser, or listening to spotify, its any VR object whatsoever pinned in VR the controller tracking, brush/paint and art station interactivities totally break until you unpin and remove whatever VR menu's you've brought into the VR space. And it happens with OpenXR as well. Hopefully that will get addressed soon as its very annoying. Minus that one issue with VR menu's and a few QoL things I really hope get added it is nonetheless an amazing program to paint in so I highly recommend. I have not yet tried the experimental loading vermillion into other VR games so cant give an opinion on that.
This is a painting vr app, I'd say "what can you expect" but I'd rate this as the best I've used so far. In my opinion it outstrips Painting VR for usability and features. If you're serious about art and you want to give oil painting a go it's cheaper and less messy than real oil, and you can have up to 4 layers at a time, so it's got one of the most important quality of life features. I don't see this as a game as much as i see this as a tool, this tool is easily the best possible way to paint in VR. It is so flawless. + easy viewing of videos while painting, allowing to paint from tutorials. + paint by numbers, making it easy for people like me to learn. + extremely realistic painting tools. + extremely realistic paint physics. A real artist could easily sink hundreds of hours creating masterpieces, unfortunately, i am not a real artist, so i think ive done all the drawing my ADHD can handle. But an amazing masterpiece of a tool.
