Jank fun and good usually don't go together when describing a game. Vietnam War happens to be all these things. This game has ambition baked into it, just from starting a new game and seeing all the corps you can pick. Once you are on the other side of the loading screen and you check the map, you'll see the map is massive, covering all of Vietnam and parts of the adjacent countries. Even with a basic knowledge of history of the war you'll see familiar locations and more esoteric ones such as Lima Site 85. Later on you'll see you can even leave South East Asia and head to the states or Hawaii, even do a lil old road trip to Canada. All the machinery of war is here, a wide assortment of guns, tanks, aircraft but all that's heavily moderated with the early access nature and the EPA Superfund site of JANK that this game is. The movement is uncomfortable, enemy vehicles spawn under the map, while still be all the same lethal. There's a litany of different mechanics, such as tunnels, survival, a dog buddy, squad commanding, etc. But for every feature and mechanic there is an equal and opposite jank aspect to it as well, too numerous to list here. Some of the jank is silly, like all the AI being indoctrinated in 18th century battle tactics (they really love to run up to the enemy for point blank firing), or the crayon eaters treating every engagement like it's a broken arrow and calling in the arsenal of democracy on themselves in a competition to earn purple hearts. The core objectives are simple: capture all the victory points. There are missions and operations sprinkled in, which show the ambition of the game, but expect them not to always work right. You can ignore them as you wish and prosecute the war as you want. The jank seems like a damning indictment on the viability of this title, but, I still have a softspot for it. It's still fun and engaging. It will need barrels of polish to get it into a more presentable state, the developer has big ambition here, and I like what I see. From a technical aspect, this game mostly ran well, but ran into stuttering around loading regions, mostly while piloting gun ships. I also regularly crashed when being spawning in the POW camp, making frequent saving a necessity. Just to be clear, this game exhibits more than then the usual quirkiness of early access titles. If you need polish and functionality, then I would say wait on it. But this game offers a nice genre blend, offering freedom of open world, packed into the FPS framing, I'm overall all in on this, and it was well worth the price of admission.
Most of the time people would be able to correctly assume that janky, frustrating movement to the point of a near inability to walk on an incline would tank a game where you're moving across a lot of uneven terrain. I wouldn't blame someone for uninstalling a game after the reload animation broke for the upteenth time, or they fall through the earth spawning again, or if they got frustrated having to restart the game frequently because it starts giving you points from some random NPC's actions (but mostly negative rep, being briefly declared a traitor, and increased war crimes - a tracked stat). But in this case these people would be giving up on the sapphire trapped beneath layers of moldy onion. There is so much to enjoy about this crazy game and its mad dev, from laying down lines of rockets on the VC hiding in the mountains outside Cu Chi from the safety of my Cobra, to patrolling the rivers in the Mekong, to kinetic actions that definitely never happened in the jungles of Laos and Cambodia. Or maybe you'd rather play the VC, expanding tunnel networks, sniping at Marines on watch duty, gathering tithes of food from locals, and briefly landing on the deck of the USS Enterprise with a Hind full of angry Vietnamese men. Want to befriend some dogs? Go ahead! Rather hang out at the chapel while knocking back beers with the squad? Alright then! Feel like going AWOL? Sure, and you can even go hunting to eat and keep your morale up - but watch for tigers! Conscientious objector? Go about recovering the bodies of the fallen for sweet XP gain! Maybe a camera crew will catch you in action! Maybe you're a sick freak and want to see My Lai in action? Fine, you can even order your squad to commit war crimes, but the loyalty of the rest of the province could suffer! Regardless of what you do for your year of service in Vietnam, you'll eventually find yourself stateside. Maybe civilian life isn't for you, in which case you can reenlist and return to the fight! Or maybe you'd rather soak in the sights of the vast farmland and countryside that stretches out to the horizons - just make sure you avoid the various anti-war protests sure to spring up! And if life in the states is still too much, Canada is just across the border... This game is ultimately best described as both deep and wide, with a lot of promise and potential all covered in a thick layer of grease. Once you wipe through the grease though, man oh man, you'll be constantly finding out about new things you can interact with or neat ways to apply your personal style to the War in Vietnam occurring in the game Vietnam War.
I have never experienced a war game where you got to go home after. Where you have a wanted meter, can buy a house and even had demonstrations against the war. This is not fully implemented yet i think but the potential to show what happened to the soldiers after they came home with the PTSD and injuries is an amazing thing.
