Do I feel like a bit of a cuck for paying for a game I used to play for free? Yeah. Do I feel alive experiencing the Nostalgia while feeling young again? Also yeah.

Genuinely one of my favorite childhood games and I'm so glad to see Armor Games move all these to Steam since the death of Flash. Honestly it's worth the price, you can play the game for free on their website, but I'm happy to support one of the biggest parts of my childhood. RIP Flash Player, RIP Armor Games, RIP Not Doppler, RIP Sky9 Games, RIP Stickpage, RIP Newgrounds (game scene is dead, just art/porn now)

Warfare Legacy Collection is a fantastic upscale of the original classic. While 1917 and 1944 have remained virtually unchanged with the exception of the improved quality/resolution, the addition of the Battle of the Bulge campaign was worth the price of entry on its own. The additional campaign is fast paced, exciting and well designed. The experience differs from the standard campaigns by having both factions start in a full upgraded form (such as having 20% cheaper units for the US Armed Forces and 50% cheaper riflemen for the Wehrmacht). Battle of the Bulge is the best part of the collection by far, an absolute treasure that blew me away with how much I enjoyed it. For those uninitiated with this game, it is an action packed world war game with visuals and sound effects that hold up remarkably well. The cover/trench based gameplay allows for thrilling moments where tanks are pushing forwards whilst infantry make heroic charges en-mass as artillery and mortar shells rain down upon the battlefield. It captures the brutal nature of warfare with gripping tactical gameplay and enough unit variety to keep things interesting. Here are my critiques of each part of the Warfare Collection: 1917 Pros: • Captures the brutal nature of trench warfare of the era • Minefields, razor wires and trenches create a diversity of experiences • Call downs are impactful and satisfying • Each side of the conflict in the campaign has its own differing tech tree giving the two sides a different feel • Morale feels like a very important mechanic, allowing you to focus either on winning through attrition or conquest Cons: • Custom battles often spawn razor wires and mines in very unfair, lopsided manners. • Factions feels too similar in custom battles. • Units share a cooldown, meaning every game typically begins with a tank being deployed. • Bombardment cooldowns are too frequent, causing matches to sometimes stall out and tanks can always be dealt with with anti tank shells. 1944 Pros: • Improves on the previous title with a supply system and unit cooldowns separated instead of shared, allowing for more interesting choice making and strategic gameplay that also encourages unit diversity and makes each match more unique. • Greater map diversity and the addition of multiple lanes, making the game more tactical and less repetitive. • Improved unit variety with the addition of bazooka teams and mortar teams. • Calldowns replaced with unit abilities like air support and artillery cool downs (and the aforementioned mortar teams). Cons: • Removal of the trench lock button, making aggressive pushes more tedious as you have to manually order multiple units to advance every time you deploy new units • Bazooka teams are very frail, making certain levels a bit frustrating to overcome without tanks of your own Battle of the Bulge Pros: • The addition of maps that advance in multiple stages as you progress allow for an exciting feeling of momentum and action. • Campaigns start with all techs from the 1944 campaigns already present, making each faction very distinct and exciting to play. • Absolutely epic scenarios where lines of tanks clash and massive waves of infantry storm trenches, artillery lines and fight through ruined cities. Cons: • Each section where you are intended to hold the line for 2 minutes was far too easy, I would invariably overcome the enemy in each of these sections with plenty of time to spare, even on the highest difficulty. Conclusion Warfare provides multiple hours of entertainment and is genuinely still very fun unlike a large number flash games that I played in my childhood. The game design improves drastically from tile to title, with Battle of the Bulge being the peak of this collection. I have already returned to this new campaign many times, replaying it purely for the sheer fun I experienced throughout. However, while the improved visuals are a welcome addition, I would say that this wasn't enough to improve 1917 and 1944. It was a missed opportunity to leave these campaigns and custom battles virtually unchanged from the original flash versions. I would have made 1917 use the supply system and unit cooldowns separated like they are in 1944 and made each faction more distinct by taking the unlocks from campaign and applying them by default to custom battles. Adding a cost to powers in 1917 would also be welcome so that artillery spam wasn't always taking place. With all that said, I would say this product is more than worth it for the Battle of the Bulge alone, and is the preferred way to replay the classic Warfare experiences as we remember them from their initial release in all their high definition, full screen glory.

Flash games should be curated and saved from extinction, they marked a generation (mostly Zs and late millennials) during the golden age of internet, an era without the brain rot we find in social media nowadays. The game clearly shows its age, which is not a bad thing, it's about its Legacy, the bygone flash era.. However, the reworking / remastering is noticeable and keeps it up to date.
