I played this masterpiece back in 2006. This game understood Warhammer 40K perfectly. And because of that I was glued to the screen and cut off all distractions. What I still love is the gameplay. No endless base building, no boredom. You fight over the map, push forward, lose squads, and then push again. Every battle feels important, and every unit feels like it belongs on the battlefield. Is it old? Yes. Is it perfect? No. Is it still awesome? Absolutely. If you ever played RTS games in the 2000s, this will feel like coming home.

I find this game helps me feel better when my life is in the crapper. from building a life out of scrap with the Orcs. to warping around with the Eldar. or chopping up chaos with the space marines

Remember getting the game from the store and spending the trip home reading through the manual. Can't wait for the remaster. This was my gateway drug into plastic crack. Be warned.

The original Dawn of War is iconic to me. A brutal RTS set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, using squads of units that are affected by everything from cover to morale, mixing melee and ranged styles for every individual unit, and featuring a short but sweet campaign that has everything you could ask for from the setting? I will always hold it fondly in my heart, even after all these years. The gameplay, from base building to capturing requisition points for your resource gain to reinforcing and kitting out individual units in your squad, remains solid after all this time. Balance is a joke, with no unit limits (Time for four nigh-invulnerable Land Raiders or flying Fire Prisms to knock down your door), vehicles almost entirely negating infantry unless you've kitted them out specifically to kill vehicles (Walkers in particular will mulch entire squads and not even take much damage due to invulnerability during kill cutscenes), and other issues that were improved upon in further expansions, but the cons never really outweighed the pros to me. The campaign is the only real reason to choose this game over the expansions, and it is a delight. Every single character has more hammy delivery than a dozen butchers shops, speaking with either grave seriousness or screaming out their lines with abandon. The missions are very straightforward, usually involving some kind of 'kill everything on the map' objective. The plot itself is predictable as can be, but it's played so genuinely that I can't help but be a little invested. The tale of Gabriel Angelos, Isador, Sindri, Farseer Macha, and more is pure, Warhammer goodness. Really, attention must be drawn to the sound in this game. Every voice actor puts their heart and soul into their lines, and its so effective that many people associate those units with their Dawn of War voices decades later. The nasally cultists, the booming space marines, the ethereal eldar, and the orks just having a good ol time, its all wonderful. Sindri, in the campaign, deserves special recognition, doing such an iconic manipulative and charming role that no attempt at a Chaos Sorcerer could ever come close in my opinion. The sound effects of the game are loud and powerful, and the music nails the tone even if it doesn't sound particularly unique. I love Dawn of War, a truly classic game.
