I'm just here to do what I should've a while ago. I have 3K hours on soulstorm, and this series of games is the greatest simple RTS ever made. Hopefully the 4th game will shake the curse of the 3rd, it'll be really funny if Total War 40K will be the only 40K strategy game worth playing. This game is great and one of the titles I recommend everyone give a try. I hope DoW4 isn't ♥♥♥♥.
One of the best RTS games of all time, and maybe the single greatest Warhammer 40k game of all time if you include its expansions (specifically Dark Crusade). It captures the tone and feel of the setting perfectly in every regard, and kinda even the gameplay, Dawn of War isn't too far from being a real time version of tabletop 40k (at least, early 2000s tabletop 40k) with how cover and such work. There's a few rough edges due to its age, like there's no widescreen support in the base game or first expansion and it's missing a few hotkeys from more modern RTS games. The only thing I personally find to be persistently bothersome is unit pathfinding being a mess in close quarters, units can get stuck and block eachother, but even that comes up less than you'd think if you're multitasking well and not blobbing your army. Also kinda neat how this game is like an archaic prototype for Company of Heroes. Gameplay-wise Company of Heroes does almost everything better, but that being WWII feels more grounded and less bombastic, you miss out on the vibrant hero characters and super units available here. I prefer the insanity of 40k even if it's a bit less technically refined. If I ever wanted to introduce someone to WH40k without needing to spend a fortune on minis, I would absolutely tell them to start here like I did. Play Dawn of War, play the expansions, play Dawn of War 2, and you'll understand the vibe.
One of the best retro warhammer 40k games out there. Beyond just being a classic this game provides a large amount of high quality (For the time) content to RTS, isometric, Wargame players. Character Models are not only interesting but for an old game are detailed and accurate to the lore setup by GW. If you are a fan of the Warcraft games then this one should surely be up your alley. However age does show, in order to choose things like resolution and fullscreen or windowed mode, you have to run something in the files called GraphicsConfig.exe and do it manually, this can be very frustrating for people not like me or are very much not used to this kind of thing. In game however trying to command armies can be difficult since they may not follow a path directly or stay in rank which can cause RTS players some frustration. All and all, A fun Retro game for Warcraft and Warhammer fans alike that provides a large amount of content to be had.
