Warlord: Almost There What I Liked My problem with games like Mount and Blade is that they are too complicated. What I like about this game is that it focuses on the combat most of the time, leaving me to do things that I like to do. The base building, more like camp building, is also pretty fun. It is nice to go from a few small tents to a fully decked out camp that looks neat almost anywhere it can be placed. What I Did Not Like While I do like the game, there are just some minor issues that prevent it from being great. While the combat is good and the game attempts to build on to it, the layers end up being boring. Eventually a new weapon type is unlocked, or a new building to attack, but it just never adds to the game. I am still going to point to point zerging until I win. The initial load time is bonkers. It slags up my entire PC, and a couple times I had to force close the game. Why I Stopped Playing I enjoyed what I did over the 12 or so hours I played, but I wasn’t interested in doing the same thing for the next 12 hours. Disclaimer I have been a gamer for over 30 years. I tend to play mostly PC games. I also bounce around between games A LOT. I may purchase a $70 game and play it for 2 hours or spend $10 on a game and spend 50 hours on it. Even if I played a game for a short time, it does not mean it is bad. It just means another game caught my attention. I also complain about flaws in games a lot, even about the littlest of things. Keep that in mind when reading my reviews. If I do not have a complaint, then the game must be special!
This is an amazing game that was truly worth the wait, the combat is a huge improvement upon the first game, Warlord: Britannia, and the attention to detail and loyalty to historical authenticity is genuinely amazing. While not immediately obvious this game dose have some strategy where you can attack certain settlements that are protecting others, or go head on and take both the settlements garrison and a raid from a neighboring Samurai Mansion, as well as the ability to customize the position of your troops when you go to combat, this game can be both simple or complex depending on how you look at the combat. I would also ask you to ignore most of the negative reviews, while there are some occasional performance issues and the load time into the map can be lengthy, the ones that seem to be the least insightful are the ones about repetitive gameplay, in which thins game is not, the starter region evolves as you go north, and when you venture south into the 2nd region the combat switches up with both the enemies and you getting new equipment, with 10 regions the game is constantly evolving as you progress, it feels as if a lot of reviews have only been spent walking around the 1st region with no idea of the havoc that is available in the later regions.
It's fun, and feels like you're a Japanese warlord on Awaji - good flow to the gameplay going from settlement to settlement conquering, upgrading your army and camp, fending off the occasional raid and patrol (increasing in frequency as you approach the core of a faction's territory), and uniting the island bit by bit! I recommend :) So far I've just finished conquering the first northern region taking over two factions and allying with a few monks. It's good, and I'll be playing more! The unit model upgrades are a nice change from Brittania, and overall a solid sequel.
I'm liking the game so far, and I love how you upgrade your troops by giving them land. This game really does stay true to history. The combat in this game is very simple, but satisfying and adds so much to the replayability. It's what kept me playing the demo and the combat certainly doesn't fail here. Some things I think would be great to add onto this game: 1. I would like it if there are more ways to get supplies other than capturing settlements. Maybe you can use your coins to purchase resources off of other factions. 2. I would like there to be some sort of reward for razing settlements. As of right now, there really isn't any reason to raze settlements other than for roleplaying as the evil military ruler. Perhaps make it so you get more supplies and gold for razing settlements. 3. PLEASE ADD TABLES!!! And just add more decorations in general. 4. This may be a bit of a stretch, but if coop can somehow be implemented, that would be GREAT! 5. This goes without saying since many others are complaining about this, but this game definitely needs optimization 6. Also bring back instant action from the demo please, or at least make the demo playable again And I will end things on this note. This game has great potential and a lot of effort has clearly been put into this, many compliments to the dev and those who helped contribute to making this great game.
