Sept. 2025
First off: I disagree with the publisher's take that this game is finished and doesn't need more updates. The dev team has done an amazing job for the most part, but I'm going to think twice before buying another game with this publisher. Their EULA seems kind of shady too, and has been criticised a bunch. That said, I got hooked on the demo a few years ago and had been waiting for a fully combat-free mode ever since. When it transpired that was not going to happen, I caved (VERY untypically for me) and bought the game on sale, and immediately got hooked again. Apart from the unfortunate fact that you can't turn off combat completely, I love how flexible this game is. If you want hardcore survival, you can have it. If you'd like your survival game without the survival, you can have that too. If you're very particular about how much of which survival elements you want, you can fine tune your experience. You can nerf the enemies down to being just a minor nuisance and make yourself ridiculously strong, which is obviously what I did. I also set fall damange to 0 and food/seed spoilage to a minimum because I don't think it's fun. Otherwise I took over the settings from "Peaceful" mode. This made for a beautiful and mostly relaxing, but still engaging experience. There's so much you can do, but I didn't find it overwhelming. Getting water to flow and plants to grow again in deserted landscapes is incredibly satisfying. You start with nothing more than a puddle and a few seeds you dig out of the sand. You can end up with vast forests, 4 restored biomes, and carefully designed gardens depending on your ambitions. I love hiding the UI and wandering through the landscapes that I helped create. The restoration process is even partially based on actual biological principles: you start out with the hardiest plants and add some that improve soil quality for the more demanding ones. You don't have to dive deep into these things though, and you can use magic that you learn from the memories of spirits that roam the land. This game makes it really easy to create beautiful places (at least if you turn off hazards/damage), and everything looks stunning in its sunrise and sunset lighting. I don't have much to say about the story - it's not terribly original, but has a good message underneath the ugly monster theme. My super easy settings allowed me to be clumsy and confused in the combat scenes without getting more than a scratch here and there. You don't have to play through the story quests at all, but some of them help a lot with gardening and restoring. A few things didn't seem to work as they should, like the terraforming and water flow mechanics in some places, and quest objectives (accidentally) done out of order. I also got randomly attacked by wraiths several times when I shouldn't have been according to the settings. Some cut scenes (or rather, camera pans) behave weirdly or don't play for me, maybe a Linux issue even with the latest Proton GE. I still seemed to get the full dialogue (just without video), so it was no big deal. The game supports several playthroughs, but my second playthrough felt wonkier than the first and some of my previous unlocks were still usable. As others have pointed out, a lot of things aren't really explained. I'm playing on a brand new gaming laptop well above the recommended specs, so I expected I'd be able to comfortably play on the highest graphics settings. I hadn't come very far with my gardening projects when rendering started to take ridiculously long, though. FPS has been fine for me. The thing that really made me less enthusiastic about this game happened after lots of hours of mostly peaceful and satisfying gardening with some quests in between: there's a story element that I found extremely disappointing. The way I played the game, it was initiated while the credits were rolling for the main story, happened immediately after, and it completely ruined what otherwise would have been a nice enough conclusion and some fuzzy feelings. The worst thing about this is that it's something the vast majority of players will never see, judging from the achievement %. It's basically a punishment for the most dedicated ones, who really care about the restoration aspect and who are likely very attached to... Well. I wrote a few paragraphs on how to avoid experiencing this in the last section of [url=https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3572509074]my guide , and what happens in spoiler tags if you really want to know. It's the kind of thing that other games ended up changing because players were unhappy about it, but this game, of course, is "finished". I had a manual backup save that I loaded and am trying to pretend that thing didn't happen and isn't supposed to happen. I guess it's starting to work, after some time when I couldn't enjoy my creations as much as before. It's still an immensely beautiful game. Real shame the publisher wouldn't let the devs update and improve it any more. * * * If you like chill and story-driven games, check out my curator [url=https://store.steampowered.com/curator/35872486]Peaceful Adventures and Stories . Summary: a very qualified "yes". If you're patient, and really love nature, I recommend it. If you aren't patient, then it might not be for you. This game is, visually, really striking. It takes obvious inspiration from BotW. I love its concept, and the difficulty customization; you can really make your own experience. Play is appealing and fun whether you are solo or online. However, there are some... issues, and as the developers state, the game should be "treated as a finished product". What you get is what you get. The thing is, the game craves to be expanded on and explored even further. I want everyone to know about it and play it. I want a community that thrives just like a garden. I want user-made content for new plants, clothes, and recipes. But it seems like they've largely abandoned this game, outside of the occasional bug squash, and have offered no support for modding. Because of this, few attempts have been made. The game must be enjoyed DESPITE the chronically small inventory size, limited crafting, odd stacking choices, and strange encounter system. Outside of 1 mod that allows for unlimited inventory (which wouldn't be fun either), there's genuinely nothing you can do about the inventory problems, except hope you know what basket you stored what item in. (Or mark up your map.) They said they were "looking into it" in 2023, but as I said, they seem to have put it down. I hope I'm wrong about that. I see a lot of potential here, and the world needs more games like this.

Very Niche, recommended with a caveat. Wildmender is, a type of farming sim at its core. You are tasked with 'mending' the desert space. It's a large space that initially has to be traversed on foot which is extremely slow. You can only work after the sun goes down. Combat is accomplished by only a mirror that you use to defeat enemies and collect memory crystals. As the title says, this is a very niche game however. I said it's a farm sim and that is largely what you have to accomplish. You have to plant grasses, trees and flowers in an attempt to extend the fertile land in the desert and this can be extremely time consuming until you're able to upgrade your spring enough to create channels to direct water around your base. Plants will have to be watered daily and can be damaged by dust devils and tumbleweeds which cross the desert during the day. They will not automatically recover their health so you have to create health potions not only for yourself, but for your plants if they become heavily damaged. I do enjoy playing Wildmender but can't do so for any extended period of time. The reason is that many of the aspects of the game seem to me to be quite heavily geared towards a multiplayer element. There are invasions of your base area by the main enemy of the game and while they're not very numerous, as your only opportunity to travel the desert is at night, it's frustrating when any of this time is taken up by an invasion, for which you are given more than 12 hours notice so you don't want to risk leaving your base once the alert is active. You will run out of water and/or starve very quickly as time passes at night and even moreso in certain areas making reaching some of the key areas of the game feel impossible to reach. There's also a toxin on the loose which, if it infects you, will slowly tick your health down at a relatively rapid rate and the only way to cure the toxin is by having special items that you craft for consumption or via a small item that one of the gods creates.. This is a game for people who are willing to and have the time to really dedicate to chipping away at at solution. The game can't be completed quickly, particularly if you're playing on your own. As you have to explore to complete the story and protect your base, grow your plants alone, rather than shifting duties with friends, of which you can play with up to 9 (10 is the player limit). Things are explained to you only as you reach certain story milestones, so some exploration can be fatal if you haven't reached the part of the story which explains what you're about to run into. Most of the dangers are environmental as the enemies only pose a danger to you during an invasion or at particular places where you retrieve shards. If you enjoy the farming sim, relaxed gameplay and visual representations for your hardwork and progress, this will be a perfect game for you. There's no pressure to complete certain aspect of the game within a specific period and eventually a fast travel system is unlocked, but getting there can be slow. Enjoyable, but still does need some tweaking to the mechanics for single players or different game modes for people who truly do want to just have a calm and no stress experience exploring and growing.

An exceptional game. There's a great balance between farming, action and discovery. Farming is quite unique - you can plant anywhere, as long as you can provide water. Start with one tiny water source and create rivers by the end of the game. You don't need to grow much to provide for yourself, so you can do very little or knock yourself out creating beautiful landscapes. And, most importantly, you can hug frogs! How wholesome is that?

The best "at your own pace" game I've played. If you want to relax, its for you. If you want survival, you can play it hard and fast. If you just want to make a pretty garden, you've got that. Even the story is really deep and moving. I love this game and will always recommend.
