Withering Realms truly is the sequel to Withering Rooms, in just about every way. There's a very peculiar vibe that this franchise has that was previously very inspired by Dark Souls, but by now has so far come in its own that it's hard to compare it to anything else without doing it a disservice. It strikes an absolutely beautiful balance between its grimdark fantasy themes and a hefty dose of humor. The soundtrack underlines everything also, it's got the same beautiful score from the first game, and then just nonsensically brilliant rock music for boss fights. Weirdness as a concept is so often misunderstood or underrated, but this game executes the concept beautifully throughout the entire narrative, beginning from the fact that you're playing a dead girl's ghost who's controlling a non-sentient meat puppet, to the fact that everything in the game is so confidently its own thing. It depicts a society that genuinely had to adapt to the reality that monsters and occult things were slowly seeping into reality, but instead of just being a doomsday apocalypse scenario it's just played as a matter of fact adaption. You see ghoulish looking characters manning storefronts, people living a day-to-day live but the lower half of their body is constantly rotting, and ghosts just exist as a thing for people to acknowledge. The characters are as strong, if not stronger than in the first game, and what I thought at first were going to be homages to the first game turned out to be essentially an entire narrative thread that connects directly to the events of the first game, making this a genuine sequel. Thus I highly recommend playing the first game, as its protagonist is a central character in the sequel and many of its references will be lost on you otherwise. Gameplay-wise, the game exceeds expectations. Withering Rooms was kind of awkward and clunky in many mechanics, but its vast build variety made it still very fun to engage with. Withering Realms knocks it out of the park by essentially doubling down on this concept, but also fixing a lot of the clunkiness of the first game. Movement is very smooth, and a proper dodge with iframes is a genuine game changer. A lot of the enemies still move frantic and frankly aren't playing fair or by the books, but in a way this is a good thing. Death is a lot less punishing than in the first game, while the levels still shuffle, you don't lose anything, not even Ichor (Souls) on death. This makes it significantly less frustrating while still ensuring you try not to die to stuff. This is genuinely one of the greatest games to release in not only the year, but perhaps even the last decade. It holds its own from beginning to end and has unmatched charm like any other game. I'm curious to see the extra content that will be added to the game for a second playthrough, and I'm beyond thrilled to see where Moonless Formless will go next as a developer after this. Highly recommended.
I think it's quite telling that despite coming out in such close proximity to other titles i was excited for, it's Withering Realms that i look forward to playing the most when i come home at the end of the day. The game itself plays like your average souls-like with the one exception that the camera is either fixed or set south of your character, à la Animal crossing. Beyond that, it's business as usual: dodge roll, block, level up, build around heavy or light weapons, magic, firearms or a blend of all of them. So why then, do i love the game so much? To summarize, it feels comfortably familiar (for the reasons cited above) but also bold and new in how it approaches progression. From what i've seen so far, the game is a succession of "zones" that all have unique enemies, events and dungeons. Each of these zones contain a story-related, hand crafted dungeon as well as a randomly generated dungeon reminiscent of dungeon crawlers of old. This is without mentioning the many points of interest you can find around the open areas of each zone, which net you unique loot and are a nice way of grinding for xp or testing your build. The game is linear, but you are given a lot of opportunities to go off the beaten path and there's lots to discover if you do. Another strong point is the atmosphere: the devs refer to Withering Realms as a "Horror Action Game" for a reason. Through its spooky locales and grotesque enemies, this game does an amazing job of immersing you into its world, as you face its horrors and slowly learn how to best deal with them. The music is also amazing, mixing calming piano tunes with disquieting horror stingers and even the occasional breakbeat banger. It all comes together quite wonderfully. I am not through with the game yet but from what i understand it is content complete, with the Early Access period meant to allow implementation of endgame activities, translations and general polishing and balancing. Setting aside the occasional weird hitbox and some pretty rough early game encounters, Withering Realms already feels like a finished product.
Withering Realms, just like its predecessor Withering Rooms, makes me feel like I’m playing a game from back in the PS2 era. Not to mention, the Easter eggs in this game also point back to classic titles like Rule of Rose, Haunting Ground, and Kuon. This is once again a hidden gem that needs to become part of my library ASAP. The game runs great on my end on 4K, maxed-out settings, at 120 FPS. Withering Realms and Withering Rooms are invaluable to me, no matter the price of the game. The game is great for people who played similar games in the past, and those who know why just know. Also, this game takes me back in time to an era long gone, and the period of time in which the game takes place takes me even further back! 10/10 game, just like the previous one.
