This is the best souls-like i've ever played, so much so that i think calling it that does it a disservice. It's a great mix of dark souls inspired level and gear progression with metroidvania style items that allow you to explore the map in new ways as you find them and survival horror style puzzles that marry well with the already Silent Hill inspired soundtrack and spooky aesthetic. Don't let the Early Access scare you, the game is playable from start to finish and you should play it NOW.
As a fan of Withering Rooms and thanks to the Demo, I know I'm in for a treat in playing this game, It works fantastic on the steamdeck as well! Update: after finishing the game, it's peak, I'll be more than happy to replay the game with all new content once it's out of EA.
We are so back. Withering Rooms is a great game with amazing monster design and a core roguelite gameplay that was addictive to break. Withering Realms takes core essences of Rooms while leaving behind the rougelite, randomized loot gear building. What we got is a more grounded gameplay loop like most traditional action rpgs. Kill to get xp, find new gear with stat requirements and level up those stats. All of this is fun and compelling. But what we are really playing Withering Realms for is the esthetic. Realms takes the witchy, occult atmosphere and turns it up to the max. Monster design is stacked and just as insane. Lots of secrets and lore being drip fed in chilling ways that leaves you questioning what you just saw. Not to mention a city hub that feels more alive and lived in than most triple A games. Realms is a great game full of secrets and spooks, but I would be lying if I said I didnt miss the core elements of Rooms like losing your gear on death and coming up with insane gear combos on the fly that vaporized everything. And the lack of madness changing the world makes Realms feel more stagnant than Rooms. While Rooms is a 10/10 game for me. Realms is a solid 8. If you haven't Play Both.
