World War Z is definitely one of the best zombie games on Steam and still way too underrated for what it has to offer. It's a four player co-op game set in a world right after a zombie apocalypse. There are 3-4 levels each in New York, Moscow, Jerusalem, and Tokyo. If you upgrade your game to the Aftermath Edition (which I highly recommend), you'll get another 3-4 levels each in Marseille, Rome and Kamchatka. The levels don't differ much from another, mostly vary between “defend this location,” “activate this console,” or “kill zombies while waiting for XY.” Despite the repetition of those missions, WWZ never got boring for my friends and me as the masses of zombies still offered enough variety for a lot of fun. The Aftermath Edition also adds the option to switch from third-person to first-person. Although I'm a big fan of first-person shooters, I still recommend sticking to third-person in WWZ, as you'll constantly find yourself swarmed by zombies and have to fight your way through with melee attacks. Ego perspective doesn't offer enough overview for that, at least for me. The levels are pretty linear with no huge opportunities for exploration, but that really doesn't affect the game flow in a negative way. I'm really into the “Horde” mode, which I've spent tons of hours playing with friends. It's basically a map serving as your base you'll have to defend against endless waves of zombies. Horde mode feels like a third-person tower defense game. With various defense options like auto turrets, barbed wires, fire barrels, electric fences and mortars, it contains pretty much everything that makes a slaughterer's heart beat a lil faster. While fighting those zombies you can also try some small missions and collect extra money to buy more defenses, which makes simple killing a small challenge over and over. The Aftermath upgrade also adds the “Horde XL” mode, which includes even more zombies than the normal Horde mode. WWZ became a comfort game for me and my friends. Even after we've played the levels including the DLCs hundreds of times, we never got bored and found some funny challenges thanks to the several difficulties and modifiers. There are tons of modifiers that make the game much easier or mercilessly difficult which, for us, massively increased the replay value. Overall, absolutely a must-have for fans of the zombie shooter genre. (I also highly recommend the Sin City DLC. Play for the unique zombie horde battles and somewhat customized class setups. Stay for(ever) the endless grind. And I do mean endless.

While similar in many ways to Left4Dead and its spiritual successor, Back4Blood, World War Z differenciates itself by adopting a RPG like gameplay, with different classes - each with their own perks - and dozens of weapons that can be improved and leveled up. Very fun in this regards, even if grindy to do so. Multiplayer supports cross platform, and is still active. Do keep in mind the level based system of the game may cause issues for low leveled people trying multiplayer out - i.e. other higher leveled players leaving. Great graphics, and decent voice acting, sound track and sound effects, and a limited palette of weapon and clothing skin customization is available. There is zero background history, and a paper-thin storyline composed of multiple different mini stories - with little or no direct relationship to each other - each with different characters and set in different places of the world. Could definitely be improved in this regards, though the variety of playable characters is nice. Unfortunately, there is no mod support. A big letdown in comparison with the extremely mod friendly Left4Dead series, and needlessly makes grinding for fully leveled weapons and classes more boring than it should be - there is only so much a few dozen levels and wildcards can do to before the game starts becoming repetitive. Overall, a very fun zombie shooter. Not perfect, but decently priced. 8/10
