What if you combined Mario 64 with Crazy Taxi? And that's how Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom is born. More precisely, the game is a platformer focused on collectibles, where new levels are unlocked as you collect them. You control a taxi with a good variety of movement abilities, and you can combine some of these moves, similar to games like Mario, A Hat in Time, and others. Once you learn how to properly use all of your movement abilities, you can also find ways to take paths that weren't necessarily intended by the developers. The game initially consists of a hub, with each world inside it being mostly accessible through portals that open after collecting a certain number of green gears. One thing I really liked was the variety of themes across the worlds, with some of them even changing the gameplay a little. Some examples include a beach heavily inspired by Sonic's Green Hill Zone, a corporate tower clearly parodying a certain company, a world inside the mind of a very crazy guy, and many others. I recommend reading the dialogue, even if it's just to see all the bizarre stuff and parodies, like Bio Vandisel talking about family or a muscular guy named Captain Abs-urd. Some of these NPCs also give you hints, and among those hints are some movement techniques that you already have access to from the beginning, but aren't explicitly taught to you right away. Something similar to the Wall Jump in Super Metroid. One of these abilities, in particular, is really important to figure out if you like collecting everything or if you plan to go for 100%. Besides the green gears, there are also coins, which are used to buy cosmetics and can also help guide you toward different paths throughout the levels, like in many other games of the genre. If you like platformers, you really can't go wrong with this one. I'd say it takes around 6–13 hours, depending on whether you just plan to finish the game or go for 100%. And one last word: this game is going to get stuck in your head. Psychotic!!!
A genuine 10/10 game where my only complaint is that i want more. one of the 5 games in my library of 500+ games where I have gone out of my way to 100% and ended up having that "oh...its over..." feeling once i saw that last achievement pop up. I can't think of a single bad thing to say about this game other than it left me in a deep depression after it was finished, it's so incredibly charming and cute in its aesthetic and so interesting and fun in its mechanics, the story isn't complicated and is much like how the game looks, charming. Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom was a blast of nostalgia and comfort and I recommend everyone to atleast give it a try. The Yellow Taxi just wants to be your friend :) 10/10
A very solid collectathon platformer with a unique control scheme for the genre. The capsule description is pretty misleading because you figure out pretty quickly that there is a jump, a double jump even. The movement tech is fairly engaging despite there being only one button to work with since it's used in a lot of different ways that you gradually learn and master through the game, turning what feels like awkward driving controls at the start into zooming around, flying off of ramps, and bouncing around to get where you want to go. The art direction and music is very charming. You occasionally get levels with some Crazy Taxi flavor where you need to deliver people around the map to extend your life timer to aid exploration. There are some negatives. The writing is pretty cringy but can be largely ignored and skipped past. Ramps can feel inconsistent, especially with larger jumps, and even with a double boost you'll get wildly different air time coming of the same ramp with multiple tries. I do wish there was some sort of Gear radar you got once beating the game, I had a bunch of levels that only had one or two collectables left in them that I couldn't for the life of me find by the end of things.
The gameplay is decently unique and quite good. The only negative aspect of the game (so far) is the Reddit tier/millennial dialogue and writing. Luckily, reading isn't necessary because most of it is flavor text and the small portion that isn't is accompanied by visual information that gives you an idea of what you need to do. Overall, I'd say the game is a solid 8.5 out of 10. Edit: After getting 100%, I can confidently say that you don't need to read the text. Just make sure you interact with every NPC (at least in Morio's lab) if you are going for 100%.
