I think this game has potential and as an avid fan of hollowknight I don't think it's a carbon copy but there are certainly some similarities and possibly plagiarism when it comes to the animations, movesets, and design choices. Below are my pros and cons after fully exploring the available map and beating 4 out of 5 bosses. My review is shortened because there is a character limit. Pros: -The combat style is very dynamic and is parry based. You can not get away with not parrying in this game as it is vital for both dealing damage and negating damage to you -The rune system has a variety of options and upgrades that makes it completely different from the hollowknight charm system. For example, you can choose to allocate more guide stones to a singular rune to increase its effectiveness/boosted effects. -The environment is colorful and appears to be full of life. It feels reminiscent of a world regrowing after civilization has ended. Each environment also has its own soundtrack with the machine city being my favorite soundtrack in the game. While the art for the environment is similar to hollowknight, I truly feel like the environments are different as they use different color schemes, lighting, and layouts. It's a similar style but used differently. Cons: -There is contact-based damage which means if you block an enemy successfully and it moves through your shield, you will still take damage. I feel like a way to remedy this while still having contact-based damage would be to have the enemy bounce back slightly or give the player temporarily invulnerability once the shield is touched or broken. -There is no downward slash. A lot of the gameplay mechanic does involve parrying, jumping, dashing, and platforming. It feels like an odd choice to be in the air a lot and be expected to dodge by jumping early game but not be able to attack enemies below you. -while each environment does have its own music, I did feel like some of the music between areas was very similar (for example, the forest and the rancor cave). It's possible that it's because both pieces rely on the piano but I would personally like more variety with the music so that it stands out more. -Environment music does not transition to boss music very quickly so a good 20 seconds of the boss fight is still environment music. If you die and go to the save, boss music will still play for about 20 seconds before switching to the environment. -Bosses do not have names that appear when fighting them. This makes it hard to look up guides for the boss you need help with. I only know the boss names from a youtube video on fighting all 5 bosses, so it's possible the names I am using are not correct. -there's no compendium for any of the enemies. A lot of games have compendiums, not just hollowknight, and I think it would be a good opportunity to add lore to each enemy and to also track what you have and have not killed. I mainly just want to know what I'm fighting and what they were before chaos took over. Were they just wildlife? Were they once part of the civilization? -Bosses do not provide any psy when killed. Since a lot of upgrades require over 2000 psy and each enemy drops between 5 to 20 psy I feel like this is a missed opportunity and makes defeating them feel rewardless. It also makes it hard to gain enough psy to unlock upgrades and items from the shopkeeper. While submitting deviators can provide 500 psy each, it is not common enough to be a worthwhile source of income. There is a rune that increases psy gain, but you can only obtain it after buying everything from the shopkeeper in the forest which can take thousands of psy. -The gacha for the machine parts is from what I've seen unlimited but I would prefer if it was more limited or let you know what you have the possibility of getting. I got a rune, a guide stone, and a ton of Agreement Is. I have no idea if there's a key item in there and I'm not going to farm machines to find out. -There is not a lot of world building or story available. From what I have gathered, we are a deviator meant to defeat chaos and bring order and life back to the world. Bosses and enemies have absorbed chaos and are now evil, but there's not much beyond that. Who are the bosses we are fighting? Why are they there? Why does the shopkeeper look so different from everyone else? -The intro cutscene does not make sense to me. We are a deviator sent from a god to restore the world so I assume that's why we come from an egg and I think the intro is us breaking out of the egg. Why are we in an egg and not just beamed into the world? Since so many other deviators came before us, where are their eggs? It just feels like an odd choice and feels very out of place to the rest of the universe. -Animations are very similar to hollowknight and do feel a bit like plagiarism. Mainly the animation used to absorb/gain new abilities as well as some of the icons that appear to show what the ability is. I noticed this a lot in the intro when you get your basic slash attack. A lot of enemies also have similar appearances and movesets to hollowknight enemies. List of examples: Tiktik/mosscreep and moss crawler, vengefly and bone fly, crawlid and the other crawlid with the blue tail, mosquito and chubby fly, moss knight and the moss warriors, crystal hunter and the mechanical flies, fungoon and the floating eyes, great hopper and the robot that jumps on you. and the hunter and moss hunter. While some of these enemies do look different and have original designs, the movesets are almost the exact same. Unrelated, but I'm not sure why there are only 2 eye enemies. They seem out of place and I'm not sure what their connection to the lore is. Bugs (for context, I play controller): -Occasional lag in rooms. I found this to be rare, though, and entering another room fixed it. -Bosses do lag as they enter the next phase and it progressively gets worse. This has led to the inability to parry then dash and the inability to parry at times -The jellyfish lady will increase the psy required to upgrade as you find more jellyfish even if you did not buy the previous upgrade. This means you can save up to 3000 psy for an upgrade only to discover you found too many jellyfish and now its 4000 psy -Jellyfish lady will only focus on upgrades and no longer provides lore regarding the bosses you defeat -Some bosses trigger the lantern cutscene while others don't. I think 2 bosses I defeated didn't trigger (mosshunter 2 and duelist) it but I still did get the "Boss Defeated" overlay -sometimes movement will randomly stop and I will not be able to move left or right but can still jump and attack. This mainly happens after I land on a platform/ground,
