Its core is good and simple, but I ended up with some personal misgivings. Just picking up passengers and going to where they want to go is nice, but as the game progresses you may have certain parts of the map you want to go to, or to plan a particular route so that you can finish the day up at a certain spot. But you aren't really given sufficient control to do that when you're so often affected by the RNG of passengers and other trains. The only way to know where passengers want to go is to let them get on your train. At that point, you can't kick them off. So they either take up room until they give up, or just lead you to places you didn't intend to go on that day. Then the other trains - as you progress, up to three other trains end up on the map. The railways are largely single lane, and double passing lanes are pretty spaced apart for how small the map is. A single train can cause a big delay, and I've had bad luck with getting two trains in the same region and causing massive delays. Or worse, as some blindspots in the other train's AI have led them to uncaringly ram into me as I'm actively trying to evade while blasting the horn. Honestly all that wouldn't be a big issue on its own, but it bothers me how they interact with one other mechanic: When the day ends, that's it. There's no mercy about this - if you're in the middle of an emergency break to make one last big delivery at a final station and end up one second too late, then too bad. The screen fades to black, the delivery is gone, and you're done. I'd have no problem with such a non-negotiable ending time if I had better control over choosing my own route and being able to plan around it. I'd also have no problem with the random whims of passengers and unfortunate delays from other trains if there was some kind of grace period at the end of the day. The game's chill enough that missing such a delivery is seldom a big deal, but my personal experience is that the combination of RNG and the hard stop to the day make half my game days end in an anxious, if not near hopeless dash to some far off station. I don't mind each game day having an end, but I wish its end was softer. I don't think it would have been game breaking to allow the player to go overtime to finish up whatever job they've already accepted. I believe it's already a mechanic that the player can't accept any jobs after a certain time anyway. I'll note that there are some solutions to some of the issues I mentioned, namely in late/post game, but the opportunity cost is massive. Extra staff members give some pretty huge bonuses, and spending a staff slot on, say, the bouncer (which lets you kick off passengers) means sacrificing one of the other staff members with a function I'd sorely miss instead. Similarly, (mild spoilers that I'll be trying to keep abstract), there is a way to deal with the other trains, but doing so only lasts a single day, and being able to remove 1-3 trains for the day requires jumping through hoops in advance that come at the cost of doing normal train duties to make it barely worth it. It ends up feeling like the solutions introduce as many problems or shortcomings as they solve. Honestly, that may have been by design, as it does make players really think about the options and compromises they have to do, and if you love that kind of thing then by all means take my complaints as praise, but it wasn't done in a way that's pleasing or fun to me personally - instead of feeling like I've been given options for flexibility and specializing in what I want to accomplish, I feel like I've got 2 or 3 antidotes to handle 4 or 5 poisons that I've got to pick from. It's still a neat game and I like moving the funny little guys around on the map, but my thumbs up ended up shakier than I would've liked.

For a long time, I have wanted a cozy train game that was similar in art style to the overworld in Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, and by golly, have I found it. It isn't the most exciting or groundbreaking game out there, but if anything in my description of A Bumpy Ride intrigues you, you'll definitely love it.

Positives: 1) It's obviously made by people who both love and understand railroading. This is important, because it means that the game isn't just a cutsy animal crossing-type platform with trains layered on. It's more the opposite: a train game that happens to be cute. 2) The train actually has some weight to it. Momentum will carry you places you don't necessarily want to go. 3) Maps are spacious and appealing. I really love the design of lineside structures. 4) There is a lot of signage and various things to watch out for as you roll along. This keeps you paying attention to the action, and not simply zoning out as you drive. 5) There's a fair amount of variety in the rolling stock present in the game. 6) Sound design is good. It sounds like a proper steam locomotive. 7) Controls are very easy to use, and WSAD is set up right out of the gate. Negatives: 1) After spending 5 minutes on it, I could find no obvious way to adjust the resolution. Ideally, I would like to play this on a higher setting, and thus make the train a bit smaller (and the field of view larger). If this setting is there, I couldn't locate it. 2) The music is a bit much. I would describe it as kind of sickly-sweet. Mercifully, it can be diabled. 3) You have to be a *teensy* too precise on the water stops for my taste. The 'window' is not the length of the tender, but really something even shorter than that. 4) I find your lack of a water tower in Catail to be disturbing. They're practically underwater. Let me fill up. Things that should be improved: 1) I want more locomotives. The 2-4-0 is adorable, but it was disheartening to see that all progression was tied to other variants of it. I'm not asking for a Big Boy or a 4-8-4... but surely a 4-4-0 and 4-4-2 or 2-8-0 wouldn't ruin the charm. In fact, on the first tutorial, you see a 0-4-0 NPC passenger tram. I'd like to drive that, please. 2) Similarly, I'd like slightly larger rolling stock, and a bit longer trains. If we upgrade our engines, the rolling stock should get a bit chonkier, too. I understand there is a fine line between losing the plot on "cute" (which is important), but I want some more variety than this 4-wheel stuff. 3) Finally (and most importantly), I'd like to see the developers work towards some internationally-themed DLC. Japanese, New Zealand, Australian, German, French, and - above all else - BRITISH trains would work very well with this theme. The UK, in particular, has so many real-life, charming, tiny locomotives and short passenger cars that would work all-too-well with A Bumpy Ride. A "European" DLC with castles and European arcitecture should be a long-term goal. Overall, though? Great, great, great little game. 5 stars.

OH MY GOD, this game instantly brings back warm memories of my carefree and enjoyable childhood when I played Zelda Spirit Tracks! A DIVINE DIAMOND!!!!! Thanks to the Steam recommendations!!!💖💖💖 And also a special thank you to the developers for using chibi animals as passengers instead of just boring chibi people😸

I usually dont write reviews, but this game deserves one. It is one of my most anticipated games since I learned of its existence. Imagine zelda, spirit tracks, but without the janky canon and without the loading screens between areas. You cant leave your train, but the atmosphere is extremely similar to spirit tracks passenger missions. I am planning to play way more of this game, but my first impression is very very good, job well done cosmoporium games, you have indeed delivered.
